View Full Version : Tell me about RX8 Longevity..
walked 12-22-2007, 08:47 AM As the title says, I'm inquiring about the longevity of the RX8.
Today I'm going to check out a 2004 with 35,000 on the clock, one-owner, and full records. Unfortunately, out of warranty, which scares me about the renesis.
It's the 6-spd manual transmission,
I am looking to keep the vehicle to at least 100k and hopefully running nicely. I put between 5 - 15k on the car per year, generally erring to the lower half of that.
Thoughts? What am I in for reliability wise?
j67345 12-22-2007, 09:34 AM holy crap, here we go again! browse around for about 30 seconds, and you will find multiple posts asking this same exact question.
I've got an '04 w/40k miles and have had no major problems at all.
mysql101 12-22-2007, 09:37 AM warranty for powertrain extends to 60k or 5 years for all 2004
walked 12-22-2007, 09:40 AM Interesting. If purchsed, can I get that extended? I guess I'll be calling a mazda dealership today.
Leesha 12-22-2007, 09:41 AM I got the extended warranty for 160km or 7yrs...something like that. I plan on keeping my car forever! :)
VolcomStoneX 12-22-2007, 09:46 AM ^^ me to, i got extended warranty till 150k miles... its got 38 right now and runs smooth!
Leesha 12-22-2007, 09:48 AM I have 11,000km on mine and I just love my baby to death...
Parking her and taking double stares everytime I leave her in a parking lot...shit I think I'm losing it...
walked 12-22-2007, 09:54 AM Just spoke to the local dealership.. $1500 or so to extend the power train warranty by another 3 years. Not too shabby.
New Yorker 12-22-2007, 10:06 AM If it were me, I'd avoid the 2004 model. I never buy any car in its first year of production, while little teething problems are still being sorted out. Go for an '05 or newer.
SoloMazda8 12-22-2007, 10:13 AM I've got an 05 with 54k now and I have no probs at all.
Leesha 12-22-2007, 10:14 AM There's a few people here that have 100,000 or more on theirs...
mysql101 12-22-2007, 10:24 AM there have been very mnor changes in the production of the rx8. The 2005 models aren't really any better than 2004. The only bonus from newer is if you get a model year that came with the recall flash - so you know the omp levels were sufficent from the start.
The lower the miles, the less chance of damage from insufficent oil injection.

This sounds high to me. But I haven't priced warranties myself.

Go to the Mazda website and build a price on the RX8 and the price of the warranty will come up... ;)

60 Months / 100,000 Km $1,474.00
72 Months / 120,000 Km $1,924.00
72 Months / 160,000 Km $2,124.00
84 Months / 160,000 Km $2,374.00
zerobio 12-22-2007, 11:26 AM I've only got about 4500 km so can't help here (but need posts!). I don't think I'll keep THIS 8 forever ... probably get another one in 5 years. And THAT one will probably be my last sports car since I'll be almost ready to retire.
skhmund 12-22-2007, 12:04 PM got it in 05' july n about to hit 50k miles, no problems, a beep a day= smile

Retire?? How old are you?
kersh4w 12-22-2007, 02:52 PM you arent going to drive a sports car when you retire?
what is wrong with you? just because you have retired doesnt mean you have to give up on life and buy a mercury sedan.

Leesha,
I'm 46. And maybe I spoke a few years too soon about retiring but I don't think I'll work past 54 of so, at least not in teaching past then.
Kersh,
Ya, you're right of course. I couldn't see driving anything other than a "sports car".
walked 12-22-2007, 08:40 PM Well I looked at the RX8 today, and its great. Records are amazing, car is SPOTLESS.
It's still under powertrain warranty, and I will be purchasing an extension on this should I follow through on the purchase (very highly likely).
Thanks for the input thus far, I'd still love to hear about 8 longevity even if I've already made my call :)

If realiabilty is a major concern for you go get yourself a nice used Honda, Toyota, or Subaru...

Those miles are starting to really pile up Expo, have you considered doing a compression test on the rotors?:scratchhe

I did back around 98,000. I linked to the results in the 100,000 mile thread. The numbers were on low end of ok. But I do have an issue on the track (read my posts here) (http://www.rx8club.com/showthread.php?t=112484) that if I want to continue doing 2 1/2 hours at Watkins Glen a couple times a year will require some work. So I am getting a Rick Engman rebuilt (http://www.rx8club.com/showthread.php?t=104255) from Mazmart. In other words an elective engine rebuild in order to still do HPDE. So once I get that done I can't brag about 110,000 mile RX-8 anymore.
