As the title says, I'm inquiring about the longevity of the RX8.

Today I'm going to check out a 2004 with 35,000 on the clock, one-owner, and full records. Unfortunately, out of warranty, which scares me about the renesis.

It's the 6-spd manual transmission,

I am looking to keep the vehicle to at least 100k and hopefully running nicely. I put between 5 - 15k on the car per year, generally erring to the lower half of that.

Thoughts? What am I in for reliability wise?

I've got an '04 w/40k miles and have had no major problems at all.

warranty for powertrain extends to 60k or 5 years for all 2004

Interesting. If purchsed, can I get that extended? I guess I'll be calling a mazda dealership today.

I got the extended warranty for 160km or 7yrs...something like that. I plan on keeping my car forever! :)

If it were me, I'd avoid the 2004 model. I never buy any car in its first year of production, while little teething problems are still being sorted out. Go for an '05 or newer.

there have been very mnor changes in the production of the rx8. The 2005 models aren't really any better than 2004. The only bonus from newer is if you get a model year that came with the recall flash - so you know the omp levels were sufficent from the start.

The lower the miles, the less chance of damage from insufficent oil injection.

Go to the Mazda website and build a price on the RX8 and the price of the warranty will come up... ;)

I've only got about 4500 km so can't help here (but need posts!). I don't think I'll keep THIS 8 forever ... probably get another one in 5 years. And THAT one will probably be my last sports car since I'll be almost ready to retire.

you arent going to drive a sports car when you retire?

what is wrong with you? just because you have retired doesnt mean you have to give up on life and buy a mercury sedan.

I'm 46. And maybe I spoke a few years too soon about retiring but I don't think I'll work past 54 of so, at least not in teaching past then.

Ya, you're right of course. I couldn't see driving anything other than a "sports car".

Well I looked at the RX8 today, and its great. Records are amazing, car is SPOTLESS.

It's still under powertrain warranty, and I will be purchasing an extension on this should I follow through on the purchase (very highly likely).

If realiabilty is a major concern for you go get yourself a nice used Honda, Toyota, or Subaru...

I did back around 98,000. I linked to the results in the 100,000 mile thread. The numbers were on low end of ok. But I do have an issue on the track (read my posts here) (http://www.rx8club.com/showthread.php?t=112484) that if I want to continue doing 2 1/2 hours at Watkins Glen a couple times a year will require some work. So I am getting a Rick Engman rebuilt (http://www.rx8club.com/showthread.php?t=104255) from Mazmart. In other words an elective engine rebuild in order to still do HPDE. So once I get that done I can't brag about 110,000 mile RX-8 anymore.
