proves some people should stop being so obsessed with weight...
The GT-R is versatile, with plenty of control latitude, and the difference between the limit of grip and the limit of control is huge. It's probably the most easily controlled car we've slid sideways between the cones. More importantly, its abilities are far more accessible for the average driver than those of its competition.
BlueEyes 12-19-2007, 12:25 AM They certainly seem convinced. I'm excited for further reviews, the car is shaping up to be the real deal.
It also looks really good in red, and it seems smaller than it does in press photos and car show booths.
SiLVeRE8 12-19-2007, 12:32 AM im sold!!
playdoh43 12-19-2007, 12:41 AM theres still the modding friendly potential of factory turbo cars, I think with some mods it should put up a good fight vs the enzo and carrera GT, well see. too expensive for me :(
SiLVeRE8 12-19-2007, 01:07 AM you really dont need to mod it at all... just get some nice wheels on it and the car is complete
YaXMaNGTO 12-19-2007, 01:13 AM Not much point in drawing any conclusions off Edmunds performance numbers...:icon_no2:
Still, GT-R is a bad ass.
Anybody notice the 3,836lb curbweight?

I disagree. Bigger turbos and go hunt down some big game. 130+mph traps.
lesper4 12-19-2007, 01:15 AM sweet
faboo 12-19-2007, 01:48 AM Interesting...glad to see it do well....
Pretty impressive, will be interesting to see if the Evo is still the car of choice for time attack in a few years. Also, it does look good in red and I rarely like red cars.

How about Motortrend? And this is the slow version, there will be a GR-T V-Spec & a lighter-weight, 530-horsepower Evo-spec model. Godzilla is back watch out... http://www.motortrend.com/roadtests/coupes/112_0712_2008_nissan_gt_r/index.html

tajabaho1 12-19-2007, 10:59 AM I wantz teh Evo-spec model :D
Razz1 12-19-2007, 11:27 AM I've seen it in person.
It's a big car like the way Americans make them.
Big = weight.
chetrickerman 12-19-2007, 11:43 AM i hate it when foreign automakers try to make their cars look american by increasing the size. IMO the car still looks like crap. exciting for others, but not for me.
crimson-rain 12-19-2007, 12:00 PM I think NISMO will have thier 2 cents in on the car. Probably in the form of an intake, exhaust, and maybe suspension tidbits. Won't be cheap though. And probably a short catalog. This car comes ... nicely "equipped" already. This aint no car car for modding. I mean come on, it ALREADY HAS DUBBS!!!! AND STILL PUTS DOWN NUMBERS!!!!
Although, body kits and body styling mods are probably going to be more of what comes out for this car than performance mods. But then again ...
VarneyMazda 12-19-2007, 12:00 PM ohh skyline fanboi's stand in line.
im going to laugh when the supercharged zr1 is released and steals this cars shine.

I don't hate the design, but I'm trying really hard to decide.
... the back looks nice.
delhi 12-19-2007, 12:24 PM I disagree. Bigger turbos and go hunt down some big game. 130+mph traps.
i thought the gtr is a big game? :squint:
i take all north american reviewers with a huge shovel of salt. Too much @$$ kissing. Waiting for Top Gear and Fifth Gear reviews.

it blows. who needs a 440 hp boat getting thrown around a track or w.e.

Nonsense, the aftermarket will probably be bigger fior the GT-R in a couple months than it is for the RX-8 right now. Give it a year and there will turbo kits to push it to 600whp+ in addition to 1000whp examples istarting to pop up.

sad, but true.
delhi 12-19-2007, 02:01 PM get a g35 coupe now and then look for wreck gtr front clips for donor. Might also work for 350z too. wheee....
chetrickerman 12-19-2007, 02:02 PM thats a cheap mans GTR. i like that idea

Yep...should be great for the handful that actually will purchase this thing in North America...
pfloydss 12-19-2007, 02:11 PM Looks like a Chevy cobalt in the rear and thats a 12 thousand dollar car. LOL
Looks nice for a Jelly Bean. I am going to design a car and call it a Jelly Bean. Hell yea why not drive a car that has no style and get a GT-R. Sure it has horse power But so does my SS454 Monte and I get 21 MPG in it with 500 FT LBS of torque and 360 HP with all accessories on through the tranny from the factory............. Not to shabby for a 37 year old car. OH yea it also weighs 3800 LBS
GT-R = Big whooppty do.
I'll keep my 8
Design1stCode2nd 12-19-2007, 02:19 PM Thing is a beast, will add to wish list.

WoodsOfGreenRx8 12-19-2007, 03:36 PM bleh. It looks alright.. The interior leaves something to want.. Dont like the way the sides look.
SlayerRX8 12-19-2007, 03:45 PM I'm not a fan of the looks, but the performance numbers are good. As for the quarter mile times, they obviously can't drive. They claim a 12 second quarter mile for the C6 Z06, but that is definitely C5 Z06/regular C6 territory. The only reason they're faster with the GT-R is because the car launches itself.
I like the GT-R but I still tend to agree that it's a bit heavy. I'd still take one in a heartbeat if I could afford it... which i could, but i'd have no money left for toys... or tires... or gas.... you know.. important things..
tjbourgoyne 12-19-2007, 04:09 PM Bold move by Nissan but it will miss it's mark like a Shack freethrow.
El Kabong 12-19-2007, 04:14 PM It's ugly, but I'd hit it.

I bet you see a C&D or perhaps other mags get a GT-R into the 11's stock with around a 123mph trap, which is damn close to the C6 Z06.

vs 911 turbo
Heavy this, no MT that... Yeah, I'm not all that happy about those things either. However, this car is shaping up to be something very special and I don't get why so many people are so resistant to that notion. Most likely because they'll never be able to afford one so it's easier to bash it than want it.
chetrickerman 12-19-2007, 04:29 PM if i could afford it, i still wouldnt buy it. i like the R34's a LOT better
delhi 12-19-2007, 04:56 PM 911 Turbo or R8 for me. i leave quoting numbers to the paper-racers while i cruise up Col d'Turini. It will make a wonderful winter beater as a Craigslist special in 10 year's time. ;)

Not really. I think it's performance is impressive for its pricetag and weight. But I think it's market is non-existent in North America.
But what demographic is going to purchase this car?
=<35...I doubt there is enough money there for this type of purchase. And this is probably the demographic that most can't get enough of this car.
=<50...IMO, their best shot, but again, does even this demographic have the money? Further, Americans have proven with Lexus, Infiniti and Acura that they are vain and want status. Why they chose to badge this a Nissan is beyond me. There is nothing status about a Nissan, and nothing status about this car except the pricetag - and even that depends on who you are. And for the price, most would settle for a Porsche and not give a damn about performance in their street car.
50+...Don't see this group at all being viable. And these are the ones that have the money to make such a purchase. But this demographic is entrenched in their Corvettes and Porsches, etc... I don't see them settling for a ~70K boy racer.
Of course, this is just my opinion, but again, I just don't see it.
tajabaho1 12-19-2007, 05:50 PM once it comes out with evo spec and an MT tranny, this car will pwn, and for the love of god, the aftermarkets will stack up so high on this car no one will want to make anything for the 8 anymore, seriously
and I think there will be one with 1000whp in the first year of it's release no doubt

from the get go its not intended to be a high volume seller. they arnt making many to begin with.
delhi 12-19-2007, 06:08 PM Nissan will sell every GTR in the first 2-years of allocation. Then it will dwindle down.... just like how the wrx debut was. Now hardly anyone bat an eye to it. Just another japanese car.
chetrickerman 12-19-2007, 06:11 PM yup. i think that people will do the same thing that they do with Hanna Montana tickets. they buy them for 20 bucks each, then they sell them for over a grand on ebay.

Uhhh, why do you know how much Hanna Montana tickets go for?:uhh:
chetrickerman 12-19-2007, 08:17 PM cause one of the guys i work with was talking to me about it cause his daughter loves hanna montana

Hmm...it's unlike you to praise anything without one of those shifty pedal thingers. Could it be that the flappy paddles are starting to grow on you?
The GT-R is one of the most hyped cars in recent memory. I think the vast majority are singing its praises with a few bashing it. At the same time though, it's going to be well outside the price range of most of those same people who are hyping it OR bashing it.
I guess it's nice to see someone enter the foray of sub-$100k "supercars" and take a different spin on it than Chevy did with the Corvette. If they made the interior look like half of it wasn't from 1992 I would probably take one over a Vette for sure.

Not growing on me any more than before. Just because they wouldn't be my first choice doesn't mean that I can't appreciate a car that has them. What always bothers me is the idiots that go on and on about how much better they are than a human shifting when it comes to track duty.
Yes, not many people will be able to afford. But the people that singing its praises aren't doing so because they can't afford it, while I expect some people that are bashing are doing so for that very reason.
When it comes to performance cars I could care less about the interior. Hell, my favorite car of all time barely even has an interior and has roll up windows to save weight. If it doesn't have the numb steering of a Vette I'd take the GT-R "flappy paddles" and all.
The thing that annoys me about this article is that they're trying to make it sound like the GT-R is SO much faster than the Viper and Z06, even though it has the slowest trap speed of the three. From a roll or in a 1/2 mile race it the other two would walk it pretty easily.
fdtt19 12-20-2007, 08:32 AM From what I understand the stock turbos should be good for 600+ but it's the block and tranny that you will need to worry about. Some are saying the tranny is pretty bullet proof so hopefully thats good but the block is still a concern. I think it will be a little while before we start seeing 1000hp Gtr's.
nycgps 12-20-2007, 08:39 AM thats a cheap mans GTR. i like that idea
In NYC there is this moron who was trying to mod his Freaking Maxima into something that looks like a R-32.
I was like ROFL LMAO WHAT A FREAKiNG MORON ~ You can so tell its a Maxima, but it looks more like some cut and paste fusion crap, and of course it looks even worst than some Civics !
and as soon as he accelerate .... LOL ! Even more funny.
chetrickerman 12-20-2007, 08:40 AM you have to post that in the "what not to do to your car" thread
Design1stCode2nd 12-20-2007, 12:43 PM Its not a beautiful car by any means but it very purposeful and powerful looking. The fact that it is an everyday supercar is what impresses me. Run a ZO6 or Viper in the winter? I don't think so. Put some good performance all-seasons on this and I bet it would do just fine while also carrying 4 people in a pinch.
I'm not due for a new car for several years, I'll be interested to see what they go for on the used market in 2010-2011.
Jedi54 12-20-2007, 12:53 PM I don't like the looks but the performance side of this car defintely demands respect. Nicely done Nissan! (never thought I'd say that)
lesper4 12-20-2007, 01:01 PM ...and on that note i like the looks of the ZR1 but then again it is the same as far as looks go for any other corvette and the price is 30k higher then the GTR
zoom44 12-20-2007, 01:27 PM i am with you 100%
and apparently pfloyd agrees with you too :)
#1Stunna 12-20-2007, 04:07 PM WOW! very nice...
RX26b 12-20-2007, 10:02 PM My guess is that with only 1500 a year to the U.S. there'll be no shortage of young, rich kids having their parents buy them the "car of the year" for the all- important 17th birthdays.
"C'mon dad, 70 grand is only twice the amount as for some cheap, crappy sedan. Plus, you can be sure if I'm running late for school with the power this Nissan makes it'll get me there in time, no sweat. And....it weighs damn near 2 tons so when I'm out drinking on the weekends and smash a tree or utility line this thing won't crumble like my bud's half-as-heavy Elise did."
chetrickerman 12-21-2007, 09:04 AM i hate rich kids
RojoOcho 12-21-2007, 09:19 AM Wow, ya'll must have a lot of cake. Wish I could afford one...
sleeperx8 12-21-2007, 03:26 PM man i hope the hate seen in this thread is reflected in the general public, i'd love to be able to afford a used one of these in the next 6 years.
danielk015 12-21-2007, 03:56 PM all i know is, for the MSRP, those are absolutely sick numbers... if i had the cash, i would order one right now.
PoorCollegeKid 12-21-2007, 05:31 PM I'm really interested to see how it compares to the Z06. The Edmunds test had it trapping at 120mph IIRC, which is 4-6 mph slower than the average Z06, but its AWD grip helps it knock down approximately the same ET. Put it on a real track and it might be getting close to 11.0 s @ 122 mph, which would stick it right with (slightly ahead of 99% of, actually) the Z06s in terms of ET and within a couple of MPH in terms of trap. Handling wise, I think I read somewhere the the GTR uses new, specially designed runflats with softer sidewalls, so this should give it a definite edge on the Z06 before you even take its AWD system into consideration. Seems like now is as good a time as any to have $70k to blow on a car...
pfloydss 12-21-2007, 06:17 PM At least when you get rear ended you can get a chevy cobalt cheap to replace it with.
BlueEyes 12-21-2007, 08:59 PM Yeah, we all read your cobalt joke the first time, it's just as lame the second time.
playdoh43 12-22-2007, 04:11 AM Yeah, we all read your cobalt joke the first time, it's just as lame the second time.
+1, preach on bro, on top of that, despite all the hate, he cant seem to stay away from the thread :p
