View Full Version : Is the RX8 the car for me?
gr8spinner 12-16-2007, 08:06 PM Hey everyone,
Just let me start by saying I've owned 3 RX7's all pre 1990. At the time I was happy with their performance.
I've started a search for a new car which will be my daily driver and occasionaly will be at the track. The RX8 is the perfect car for me on so many levels. Rear seats, 4 doors, comfortable, and good looks.
I've driven a GTI, a Mazdaspeed3 (fast!!) and a few others, but I can't force myself to drive a fwd car. So I took an RX8 for a spin a few days ago and was completely shocked with how l little power it had. I didn't expect a rocket based on the specs of the car but that was incredibly slow. I've been looking into the turbo's and mentioned it to a few people and they all cringed and said I'd kill my motor. Is there any realistic way to get huge hp, and more importantly gains from this motor without spending 7K. The price of the car and the turbo is putting this car in a price range with nice but used M3's and Audi s4's. Since it will be my daily driver it has to be super reliable. Would going fi put too much strain on this tiny motor. I mean it's a 1.3 putting out 238 hp, how much more can it be safely pushed.
I know the RX8 isn't all about power. A car should be balanced with power, handling, price, weight etc... With this motor this car doesn't even come close. I read about how people are happy with their power but I can't help but think they've never driven anything else.
I'm looking for a nicely balanced car. Isn't everyone? Maybe this isn't the car for me.

delhi 12-16-2007, 08:12 PM No. The Rx-8 is not for you. Get a WRX. It's fast, love to be modded and reliable.

deadphoenix52 12-16-2007, 08:15 PM you said "huge hp" so no this car is not for you.
Noble Wolf 12-16-2007, 08:17 PM Gtrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
I bet money that this is just another screen name for one of the people that have asked the same damn questions without doing a search over the last couple months. Malachi or effini-17 would be my guess...
Mods, IP check?
Renesis07 12-16-2007, 08:28 PM 350Z is the car for you
chancejat 12-16-2007, 08:30 PM 350z's arent that fast .......not much faster than an 8
SayNoToPistons 12-16-2007, 08:39 PM I say get a Mazdaspeed 3. I know someone that sold his WRX for a MS3 and he would never go back. But hey, you can't deal with fwd cars lol... How about an s2000?
350z's arent that fast .......not much faster than an 8
So would you say that an RX-8 isn't much faster than a Scion TC, MX-5, or Mazda 3S? Answer carefully...
BlackRX82006 12-16-2007, 08:51 PM Dude...if you want power. Honestly get a new Mustang GT. They look great, I'm a chevy guy and I almost got one until I drove the 8.
chetrickerman 12-16-2007, 08:51 PM oh crap
Cody Red 12-16-2007, 09:04 PM just get the speed3 and put the fattest sway bars you can find on it.
Noble Wolf 12-16-2007, 09:04 PM Hey everyone,
Just let me start by saying I've been married with the most beautiful women of the world, but yesterday after a crappy sandwich I ate I met this girl and I think I fell in love.
Should I have some sex with her before marriage or it's not necessary?

i figured the videos proved my point but yes if you cant drive the 8 right anything can beat.........btw im so very sorry for insulting your intelligence by disagreeing with you please forgive me for my sin towards you.........please i beg thee.......
turborx8 12-16-2007, 10:58 PM Find a used rx-8 and the money you saved (compared to buying new) you can afford a turbo kit.
You can't just install a kit and call it a day. You need supporting mods and a solid tune and your laughing!
delhi 12-17-2007, 12:51 AM hes right........but the wrx is one ugly mofo
driver must reflect car's aesthetic. Not everyone is beautiful. :lol2:
RotaryP7 12-17-2007, 02:14 AM You are the weakest link..
Hercules 12-17-2007, 08:50 AM Don't speak for everybody.
I sold an E46 M3 (2003) for my 2004 RX-8. I didn't regret the decision, and while I miss the power, I enjoy the handling of the RX-8 more than what the M3 provided.
It was a great eye-catcher though :)
chetrickerman 12-17-2007, 08:54 AM i still say oh crap
kartweb 12-17-2007, 10:01 AM You're probably better off with an Infinity then the RX8 if you can't deal with the powerband of a rotary.
If you like Mazda products try an AWD CX7. More bottom end torque then you'll need and it both drives and handles a little better then a 350Z. Just doesn't stop as quick.

Nope, sorry your wrong. Even if I was, why reply and have nothing to say. Sure some people ask redundant questions but isn't that how forums grow. Comments like the one you just made are the ones that stunt the growth of forums.
Renesis07 12-17-2007, 01:50 PM dude, if you think the rx8 is 'slow', then don't buy it. Buy a mustang or a z, theyll FEEL faster to you. If u look at numbers, the 8 isn't "slow", 159 ft lbs of torque is weak. I mean do u want a car that feels fast or actually is fast. U want speed, buy a used C5 or GTO. All these cars aren't cheap so my opinion is find something u like and feel comfortable buying and don't rely on a bunch of bored guys at work that are looking on an rx8 forum on a computer at their desk for answers :)

Nope, noobies such as yourself do nothing but retard (a very fitting word...) the growth of forums because you do nothing but clutter it up with the same crap over and over and over again. Have some respect for the people that have been here a long time helping others and at least make a tiny bit of effort to do your own research. If you have questions after that, post away and I'm sure people will be willing to help.
Optical TDI 12-17-2007, 07:22 PM I just traded in my 2007 GTI with DSG. It was chipped so much quicker than the RX-8, but overall, I like the RX-8 better. 9,000 RPMs, sweet manual, RWD, and the good looks. Oh yes, did I say RWD. I miss it soooo much, it's okay it's not as quick. The GTI is awesome for a FWD car, interior, handling, DSG was cool but I got sick of it. However the FWD was not for me.

My favourite schmuck is prolly right!
chancejat 12-17-2007, 08:25 PM from reading id say the best choice for you is a used gto 2005
+, you should be able to get one with under 30,000 miles in the low 20's........its rwd and fast a hell.....youll pretty much own the road ,except for heavily modded cars or vettes.......and youll get better mpg than an 8.......but i wouldnt take it to autox

it feels faster, but is it really?
RojoOcho 12-17-2007, 09:44 PM I'm thinking Crossfire...
Sorry I couldn't help it guys.
it feels faster, but is it really?
Stock for stock the new GTI and RX-8 are pretty damn close speed wise, so yes.
enforcer 12-18-2007, 12:40 AM At the end of the day it wil be a combination of what you learn in this forum and your personal choice which will count....
Learjet_Pilot 12-18-2007, 02:44 AM Thank you guys for convincing me that the 8 is the car for me. You all think like I do. I pick it up on Wednesday.
Sure, the first time I'm at a stop light against a Mustang it'll suck, but that's not the point.
chetrickerman 12-18-2007, 07:40 AM Stock for stock the new GTI and RX-8 are pretty damn close speed wise, so yes.
im just sayin cause in the car wash thread with th guy who has the GTI, everyone is saying that the 8 is faster, its just the GTI feels faster cause of the torque

It probably isn't the right car for you. It really boils down to what you use your car for. I drive mine 80 miles day, and I track my car. I don't street race. I don't use stoplights as makeshift dragstrip light indicators.
My first serious car, was a 1993 Audi S4, that could probably crash through the 1/4 mile in about 13.5 seconds. Definitely a very fast, and fun car when on boost. Go speed parts were relatively inexpensive in relation to how much power they delivered. It was a greatly fast car, that otherwise, the car felt like a large barge:)
The next car was a 1995 M3 with substantially more torque than the RX-8, and a little more power, as my car was chipped, had an intake, and exhaust. I bought this because I made the mistake of autocrossing the UrS4. I wanted something that could handle the turns, and for me, that meant sacrificing speed.
Then the M3 started to show its age. It slowly fell apart of the course of the year. It was expensive to keep it as a daily driver and as my weekend track toy.
This is why I own my RX-8. It's brand spankin new (or was), with warranty. I am not a mechanic, as my past two german cars have taught me. Moreover, the RX-8 is nearly as fast as the E36 M3, and handles just as well (if not better) with potential to handle MUCH better. The power delivery, IMHO, is just as nice too. I love how smooth the rotary feels.
And, FWIW, my RX-8 will fly down the front straight at Pueblo Motorsports Park 10mph faster than my modified E36 m3. Exit speeds are higher, and cornering grip on crappy RE040s is noticeably better too.
Either I'm an exception to the rule, or I'm crazy. Speed does not matter in the type of driving that I do. There's so much to be said about a car like the RX-8, that emphasizes how much of a driver's car it is.
Try and find a car, other than an EVO IX or Mini Cooper S, that has better steering feel. Now try and find a car that forces YOU to drive it; none of this computer mumbo jumbo or awd to keep you safe. And if this car is as balanced and fun to drive as the RX-8, and utilitarian, for less than the price of an RX-8 let us know. I'm always ready to jump ship for a better, more fun, and more utilitarian car.
im just sayin cause in the car wash thread with th guy who has the GTI, everyone is saying that the 8 is faster, its just the GTI feels faster cause of the torque
Everyone is wrong. The GTI traps 95ish mph and the best mag times are mid 14's with more than a few owners attaining those times. In a straight line they're about as close as two cars can get.
chetrickerman 12-18-2007, 11:11 AM ok. the GTI is turbocharged so it should tie it if not beat it
Renesis07 12-18-2007, 11:12 AM GTI'S ARE NOT FASTER THAT RX8S!!!!! Ive driven both and even solid number wise an MT Rx8 beats the GTI, as if it matters anyways, look at the two! I mean the GTI is the type of vehicle thats cool for the first hour u own it then itd get old
delhi 12-18-2007, 11:20 AM But GTi has the fancy flappy paddle that actually works while ours just a plastic extension that makes you think that it is working.
Renesis07 12-18-2007, 11:23 AM GTis have an AWESOME autostick, I will definately give that to them. And I love theyre torque. But that doesnt make them faster. The 8 isnt much faster, but is faster. Dammit at least let me say my 8 will beat a GTi, dont take that away from me!!! haha
chancejat 12-18-2007, 12:02 PM Everyone is wrong. The GTI traps 95ish mph and the best mag times are mid 14's with more than a few owners attaining those times. In a straight line they're about as close as two cars can get.
ike you are all knowing.......you should start a cult or something.......
the gti is easier to drive to its potential.....the 8 is not....so in most cases the 8 will lose
chetrickerman 12-18-2007, 12:35 PM Sure, the first time I'm at a stop light against a Mustang it'll suck, but that's not the point.
Exactly. now keep that mentality in your head, take the 8 to your local autocross track, and you will no longer care about the cars that can beat you in a straight line
Renesis07 12-18-2007, 02:24 PM either that or just rev your engines next to honda civics at a stop light and youll feel like a badass when u smoke that thing to the next light ;) That keeps my ego going! haha

How funny, that's the same thing I do to AT RX-8 and V6 Camaro owners ;)
