dannobre 12-16-2007, 01:40 PM Stay home :D: Even with snow tires...you probably will just bottom out the car and get stuck
Leesha 12-16-2007, 01:43 PM Joking!! I have van's on my street that are stuck!! I will just be plowing snow with my MSbumper!! We already have 2ft and its still coming down hard!!
Renesis_8 12-16-2007, 01:43 PM no you can't.
The snow was hitting the bumper of my Subaru Legacy, in Toronto.
Well, I didn't get stuck becoz of the AWD with snow tires. Wait until the streets are plowed at least.

Mississauga looks about the same. I was watching some guys push a big Caddy out of a drift at the intersection and thinking that I might have tomorrow off
zerobio 12-16-2007, 02:52 PM And London is the same.
Leesha 12-16-2007, 03:14 PM Wow!! Its all over the nation too!! The states have it bad also!
SNOW DAY TOMORROW!
Mugatu 12-16-2007, 03:25 PM honestly i've driven in snow as deep as that with my dunlop m3s on and have managed just fine.
Dhaark 12-16-2007, 09:19 PM The snow here in Ann Arbor, Mi was almost the same today. I'm running Falken Azenis RT-615's and managed just great on the semi-plowed streets but got stuck in the parking lot a few times.
nycgps 12-16-2007, 09:49 PM In short, if its higher than your car's clearance, then its a no go.
Even with chain on your tires, its still a no go.
so forget it, just stay home for a few days.
turborx8 12-16-2007, 10:54 PM The snow is up past my waist at the end of my driveway. There is nowhere for me to shovel the snow my banks are so high.
I am forced to hire a truck to plow my driveway.
Winter is the worst season ever invented. LOL

there was a time that the snow got up to my waist I was 5"11 that time I think, it was MANY MANY years ago, maybe year 96 or 97, I dont even remember. shit and I have to *manually* shovel the snow out from my home's drive way all the way out to the streets, thats 5 houses of snow. I shovel it all, took me 2 something hours, by the time I got home, I cant even feel my legs
The worst snow ever since I got the 8 .... tall enough to cover the door I think.

Wow! We didn't get 4ft of snow but close enough. I have to try to make it in to work today. First time taking the RX out in snow so we'll see how it goes. I have dunlop sport performance 3d's...the new ones that came out.
Will let you all know how my drive went...wish me a handful of luck!
tdiddy 12-17-2007, 08:33 AM I drove home from Chicago on Saturday night. Didn't get home until about 1am. Luckily I was in our all wheel drive SUV because I was hitting snow drifts on one of the roads that were at least 2 feet tall. It was fun but looking back it was stupid of me to try and take that road. If we would have gotten stuck we would have had to walk at least 5 miles to get to the nearest house.

DarkBrew 12-17-2007, 08:50 AM I was pretty psyched up for stayin' home today....uhh... because of the snow storm...

How was your drive in?? Where the main roads clear???
Leesha 12-17-2007, 08:58 AM Reaper...I'm part time so it doesn't matter...sick or not, I don't want to kill my 8... ;)
reaper1 12-17-2007, 09:06 AM I think you answer yourself .... Make it a long weekend .. I have a body kit like you , if snow is high ..... you'll be in trouble ...

Do you drive in winter?? I guess not when you have a civic...
reaper1 12-17-2007, 09:27 AM My 8 is hibernating ....lol
Ottawa got walloped as well. at least 35 cm, and that's on top of whatever was on the ground from before. I managed to make it home from work last night, but only taking main roads since the plows left 2-3 ft snow banks blocking side roads at the time. It was quite a pretty drive down the canal parkway though, with the snow banks piled higher than the car on either side. It was like driving down a bobsled run.
Rems31 12-17-2007, 09:53 AM I went downtown with my dad and brother to watch the Raps game yesterday and took the GO bus cuz of the weather. When we got back to the GO station, our civic was stuck. My bro and I had to push the car for a while to the plowed area of the parking lot. I inhaled a lot of fumes from the exhaust...
reaper1 12-17-2007, 10:00 AM You got high for free . Can't beat that ....lol
qtwre 12-17-2007, 01:41 PM You guys are making mountains out of snow hills. I was out driving around and doing some shopping yesterday on the unplowed roads (lowered mind you). It was like Mad Max out there. No lanes. Makes your own rules. :)
zerobio 12-17-2007, 02:33 PM I really want/ed to get the MS kit (instead I have all the appearance stuff) but I was worried about winter. Sounds like some of you have a bit of trouble with that kit (and others) in the snow so I will save my money for now and stay "un-kitted", unfortunately.
crashcrf 12-17-2007, 03:58 PM I drove 7 hours home from college, it usually takes two, 7inchs of snow, traffic. I was driving with the throttle. Advice, take the traction control off, keep the rpms up. It was bonding time with my 8, it shows you what the car can really do.

use lots of gas? :lol2:
9291150 12-17-2007, 07:54 PM 29 cm of snow and I've been having a blast, with snows on plowed roads of course. Let's not kid ourselves, there's no ground clearance and all it takes is a large frozen chunk of ice to do some real damage.
Otherwise, it's so freak'n easy to control, with or without TCS/DSC.
RojoOcho 12-17-2007, 09:46 PM If we get a flurry in NC, my city practically shuts down.
zerobio 12-18-2007, 05:18 PM I've been trying what was recommended here if you get stuck ... turn off DSC ... and it's really helping. Thanks gang.
RotoRocket 12-18-2007, 09:44 PM I can't praise the Hankook iPike w409s enough. They're more aggressive than the IceBears.
They got me home during a 35 mile, mostly highway, 7 inch snow storm, 28 degree trip, without incident or drama.
The highway was barely plowed, there was snow blowing everywhere, the lanes were barely visible, and I was passing fwd and even suvs with relative ease, and in full control.
The secondary roads were terrible.
Fantastic tires.
Skiptomylue 12-18-2007, 09:59 PM yeah, woodstock got hit prettty hard, we also have a shortage of snow plows. so my streeet didnt get plowed untill 10 at night...
i blame texas for this!, you and your damn rain storm!, Learn to control your weather better
although the weekend is suppose to be +8 and rain :)
Leesha 12-19-2007, 09:38 PM Just for the record...Dunlop Sport 3d's are excellent! Got me home safe. All our snow is melting now...and I just took my car through a car wash. It was the only clean car on the road and to be honest...the only sports car... Oh well, its clean now.
Thanks for all the responses...good to see everyone is safe!!
Endor 12-20-2007, 10:11 AM The snow here in Ann Arbor, Mi was almost the same today. I'm running Falken Azenis RT-615's and managed just great on the semi-plowed streets but got stuck in the parking lot a few times.
Aren't those summer tires? I'm surprised you could get around at all. I'm in Ann Arbor too, and last winter my stock summer Dunlops had trouble keeping the car moving when there was a 1/4" dusting of snow. I picked up a set of Blizzaks as soon as I could.
I took the RX8 and Blizzaks out last Sunday morning and got around like a champ while most people were staying home. Even drove through some completely un-plowed roads where the snow was 8-16" deep, but it wasn't a problem. I only got stuck once, and that was when backing out of my driveway because the plow left a big pile of snow right behind me that was a good 2-3' deep in places. Had to shovel that down a little bit before I could make it through.
It's still a low sports car though, and I had to make sure I didn't underestimate the conditions, meaning that I had to keep the momentum up when the snow started getting high, or else I ran the risk of getting stuck. My girlfriend's CR-V and it's all-season tires and AWD got around much much easier than the RX8, especially when hitting those big piles of snow that bunch up at intersections because of the plows, and when starting from a dead stop.
tajabaho1 12-20-2007, 12:39 PM right now in CA, its.........DRIFTING SEASON!!!!
hahaha, everyone here knows what I'm talking about, lovely cold rains, puddles of water, hydroplaning
its uber fun, and great for accidents!
Leesha 03-05-2008, 07:59 AM Holy this is like the 100th snow storm for this winter!! What is going on??? I can't even shovel the snow it's so heavy!! Had to help dig my friend out...her suv was stuck!

Tim Tim Tim 03-05-2008, 09:15 AM man I will trade with you leesha.. Tampa, fl.. Hot as balls all year round. I would love a chance to get to enjoy the snow.
Leesha 03-05-2008, 10:46 AM Really...okay for a year...lets trade places starting NOW!!
My dad and tons of family are in Miami. I know what you mean about the heat...I couldn't believe how hot it was down there when I visited last and it was in summer too!!
I couldn't breath!
theOUTSIDER316 03-05-2008, 04:35 PM Hey Leesha, I jst got my '8 a week and a half ago and wouldn't ya know it......here in "Winterpeg" it snows again:banghead: But with the snows tires, traction control and some "patient" driving:icon_no2: , 2 my surprise the '8 handles beautifully in the snow! Unfortunately she's the only car I got so I'll jst have 2 rough it out and drive easy when it snows here:) !
BTW: Do u know what Canadian parts shops might have the clear sidemarkers??
Leesha 03-05-2008, 07:01 PM Hummm good question... I'd say try any of the parts dealers and they should have it forsure.
Leesha 03-07-2008, 04:55 PM OMG 20cm of snow-Friday & Saturday... Now I know I'm not taking my RX8 anywhere at all for another good week or so!! DAmn....Skiptomylue...you were right!
qtwre 03-07-2008, 05:58 PM Is that you laying on your car Leesha? Get well soon!
Leesha 03-07-2008, 06:23 PM LOL...that's for my American friends... Shhhh...don't tell the Canadians. :)
kartweb 03-08-2008, 09:57 AM Finally got some snow time in the RX8. We had a winter storm on Monday so I figured we got our 1/2" of snow for the year. Never checked the weather on Wednesday night. I should have. Drove the 8 to work (45 miles). At lunch it was snowing, maybe an inch of wet snow but coming down pretty good. Returned to the office at 1:00 and there was no snow left on my car. At 1:30 they announced the plant was closing - OK this is Texas, and couple inches shuts things down. Went out to my car - Holy mackeral - 3" + fresh snow settled on my car in 30 minutes!
The snow plow under the bumper still cleared barely but the snow center of the road rose up to 5-6" where tracks formed and pushed snow inwards. The lowest point on the car seems to be the catalyst self-destruct shielding.
Dunlop Direezas are harder compound tires then OEM with a typical rain shedding chevron pattern. That doesn't work very well in snow. I was beginning to regret not getting the BFG's while I was clearing the snow off the car.
I knew the freeway would be a logjamb. There a couple of hills where semi's tend to slow motion drag race each other ending up in blocking both lanes and stopping traffic for hours on end. I took some backroads, and the going was slow for the first 2 hours. By then the accumulation was 6" with the roads matted down to about 4".
Made it home in about 4 hours and never had to get out to push. What I learned;
Turn off the DSC. If the tires are stopped for a minute or two the treads become ice trays and no amount of rocking will move the car. Drop it in 2nd gear and bump the rev limter for a few seconds to eject the ice pack. From there you're on your own - the car will slide towards the downside of the slope as it begins to move as expected - or at least you better expect it to. As you begin to move ease off the throttle to get some grip. You may need to put it back in 1st gear after ejecting the icepack and start over.

Well, the sun is shining is central Canada today, and the (main) roads in Toronto are nice and clear. I'm back in the '8 today.
And I will say, I've been pleasantly surprised this winter with what four high-end snows and traction control can do for a sports car in snow!
Leesha 03-10-2008, 08:21 PM Wow your a brave soul taking your RX out in that weather. I only take mine out when the roads are plowed and there is minimal salt and slush...
Since the road are somewhat decent now I will be taking mine out tomorrow... :)
Nice ... Better hope we don't get freezing rain or else your in trouble...:lol2:
The 9 hours of freezing rain went to the east coast, you're right that would've sucked.
I just brushed off the fluffy stuff and headed back up to Ottawa the day after the storm. It was quite surreal driving up the 416/417 where the snow banks are piled up almost to the top of sound barriers. It was a like an oversized bobsled run, kinda fun actually.
snowflakes 03-12-2008, 11:15 PM ohhh deifnitley u can make it through with your rx8, no problem. just make sure before leaving your driveway you launch it at 9000RPM~ then reverse back and park and go inside your home and tell yourself YOU CAN DO IT! repeat but now at 10K*.... trust me...im a professional, thats why my engines blown..... hahahah
snowflakes 03-12-2008, 11:15 PM ^ warning: do not attempt. it was a joke. lol
