View Full Version : for people with big brakes, slotted/drilled rotors and/or hawk brake pads...
raizen82 12-06-2007, 05:15 PM how's your squealing brake problem? i've been searching alot on this and have a read alot of threads but they're mostly outdated.
so i thought i'd ask how these guys with upgraded/aftermarket brake sets are doing after having them for almost a year or even more. are you still experiencing the squeals or is it completely gone?
SouthFL 12-06-2007, 05:59 PM It's ironic that I use Hawk HP Plus pads on this car and don't get any brake squeal. I've used them on other cars and they've sounded like a dumptruck being brought to a halt.
raizen82 12-06-2007, 06:22 PM how long you been using them?
mysql101 12-06-2007, 06:33 PM I've got hawk ceramics, and drilled/slotted rotors. no bad sounds at all.
I hear a little bit of sound from the rotors and the slots during hard braking, but it's not squealing or anything.
StealthTL 12-06-2007, 06:40 PM Hawk fronts, rotors are drilled, not slotted (shaken, not stirred!)
One year, not a squeak or squeal.

raizen82 12-06-2007, 06:49 PM ^really? i saw the thread for the upgrade kit for the 8 with the slots and drilled and i asked if it solves squealing the problem. somebody answered and said it doesn't...
oh and what brake set is it?
mysql101 12-06-2007, 06:52 PM squealing is going to be a result of the pads, not the rotors.
MazdaManiac 12-06-2007, 06:56 PM I have the Brembo slotted/drilled and Hawk HPS pads.
No noises, squeaks or anything.
Sometimes, if I'm riding along a curb, I can hear the pads passing over the holes. It makes a very quiet "fft-fft-fft" noise.
The dust is brown instead of black, but no biggie.
raizen82 12-06-2007, 07:04 PM ^anything cheaper that would get the same result? was thinking about this kit:

MazdaManiac 12-06-2007, 07:20 PM Looks good to me.
About the same that I paid for all the same items.
Spin9k 12-06-2007, 07:33 PM Had the Hawks and RB slotted rotors ... meh...no noise whatsoever, even after a year... everyone said they make terrible noise. Ditched them suckers...wimpy! Now I got me some REAL pads, and they do squeal like a pig each and every stop! Bitchin! That's more like it :o:
h2oskir156 12-27-2007, 08:14 AM I just bought my car about a month ago. It has 13,000 miles on it and I have no idea if they have ever been changed. I have a horrible squeeking problem, almost every time that I brake the squeal really bad. I am so embarrassed to be driving in this beautiful car and have it sound so awful! Any cheap, efficient ideas that you all may have. I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks
Spin9k 12-27-2007, 08:25 AM You being embarrassed when your car makes noise is understandable. But also understand, your reaction is no reflection on the quality of the brakes in your car.
The noise comes from the quality materials used to produce the prodigious stopping power the RX-8 has.
If you don't care about that so much(depends on the use of your car), and never use it's braking potential to the fullest (like at the track), you can replace those noisy pads with a far more 'street only' type pad. That will reduce or eliminate the noise, and a lot of the brake dust more than likely.
The other way to think about the noise is that it shows the quality of car you have (if you hung around racers much you'd REALLY hear what squeaky brakes sound like!!) Then you can 'enjoy' the noise as you know you have some 'nearly the best' brakes on any car in existence!
It's all in your perception of what's going on.

This looks pretty good just concerned over opinions of this rotors chewing up pads. I have to replace my brakes, my A/C is out as well and ordering more tires from tire rack. Third set of Kumhos.
invasion08 01-18-2008, 07:34 AM I have Stop Tech F&R Slotted Rotors with Hawk HPS Pads and no squealing
lure3o1 01-18-2008, 09:39 AM I have Racingbrake Slotted/Drilled Rotors with Hawk HPS pads for about 2years now and no squeling
Jedi54 01-18-2008, 12:35 PM getting sick of my squeaky brakes. Might be time to upgrade...
Stock pads, squeal
stock pads after TSB addressed, squeal
Hawk HP+ pads, squeal
Hawk ceramics, no squeal at all
all with stock rotors.
Razz1 01-18-2008, 11:30 PM You can get drilled for 80each then buy pads for cheaper

firebirdude 02-10-2009, 04:09 PM Using hawk ceramics for roughly a year. Thumbs up!
Jedi54 02-10-2009, 04:11 PM I've got Racing Brake Drilled / Slotted Rotors all the way around with Hawk Ceramic pads. No sqeaks, sqeals, and hardly ANY dust.
