View Full Version : midpipe sound.
chetrickerman 11-30-2007, 09:15 PM so i bought the midpipe with the resonator from rx7store, and i installed it today. It went about as smooth as it could. (2 trips to ace for stainless nuts and bolts) i got both the gaskets on there, and checked it 3 times for leaks, and no leaks what so ever. but i went out to take it for a spin and she how she sounds, and i was disappointed. it sounds really ricey. BUT i remember someone on here saying that the resonator has to get broken in and then it will sound nice and deep. (thats how glasspacks are) i just want to make sure this is true. is it?
Noble Wolf 11-30-2007, 10:10 PM It will calm down a little after some days, but don't expect a huge difference.
chetrickerman 11-30-2007, 10:11 PM hmm, hopefully the ricey sound will go away, cause i have no idea what could be causing it.
Noble Wolf 11-30-2007, 10:14 PM What do you mean by "ricey sound"?
chetrickerman 11-30-2007, 10:23 PM hard to explain, umm. it just doesnt sound low like i thought. and at first i though it was a leak, but i checked and its not
chetrickerman 11-30-2007, 10:48 PM i would try to get a video of it, but my video format doesnt work on here. im just wondering if the resonator is the same thing as a glasspack as it has to have time to break in and get a deeper sound
chetrickerman 11-30-2007, 11:18 PM i found the words i was looking for. it sounds like a high pitched raspy-ness. i want it to go away.
road1will 12-01-2007, 12:19 AM i found the words i was looking for. it sounds like a high pitched raspy-ness. i want it to go away.
i ran just a midpipe with stock exhaust for a few weeks while waiting for my corksport to come in. i hate the way it sounds. sounded exactly like you say. sounded ricey/raspy anytime you were on the throttle. i thought it was me being paranoid but i had a few friends listen while i drove by, and they confirmed that it did int fact sound like shit.
now order an exhaust :) i m very pleased with my corksport
chetrickerman 12-01-2007, 12:22 AM corksport? i heard that they are VERY loud with a midpipe. but they are really light
road1will 12-01-2007, 12:25 AM yA, my exhaust is pretty loud. but it does sound good :) and definitely not ricey.
chetrickerman 12-01-2007, 12:28 AM damn it. why did everyone say it was gonna be nice and deep?
on a postitive note, the 8 has a little more "umf"
i will probably go with something like the mazdaspeed one. that sounds nice on the stock cat, so i will see how it is with a midpipe
swoope 12-01-2007, 12:29 AM corksport? i heard that they are VERY loud with a midpipe. but they are really light
the rx7store resonator is very small.. you might as well got a straight pipe..
and i can tell you if you find the stock exhaust with what you have loud or off pitch. you will be hating life with the corksport...
i had one.. great exhaust.. great sound, but a bit to loud.. that was with a hi flow cat and a resonator..
beers
chetrickerman 12-01-2007, 12:32 AM damn, but thanks. gotta look for a not so loud but light exhaust now.
swoope 12-01-2007, 12:36 AM damn, but thanks. gotta look for a not so loud but light exhaust now.
with what you have i can say the borla and racing beat... i think also the hks dual might be good..
beers
chetrickerman 12-01-2007, 12:39 AM i will probably go with borla. its not heavy, and isnt that expensive. and it shouldnt be loud either
just have to save up 600 bucks, cause i HATE the way the midpipe sounds. i hate that ricey raspy sound
chetrickerman 12-01-2007, 01:02 AM im still pretty dissapointed though
tajabaho1 12-01-2007, 02:30 AM Chet, ull get used to it, I have turbo XS midpipe and it doesn't sound rice at all...........maybe its not broken in completely?
chetrickerman 12-01-2007, 02:34 AM but you also have a cat back. i have stock
and its a different maker. swoope said that the resonator is really small in the rx7store midpipe, and it does look that way
swoope 12-01-2007, 02:48 AM one mans rice is anothers joy....
you have to hear stuff in person...
btw, the turbo xs is way loud..... that is the midpipe and catback...
beers
chetrickerman 12-01-2007, 02:51 AM very true, but he only has the turboxs midpipe. he has the espilier (sp) cat-back, which is one that im looking into
swoope 12-01-2007, 02:59 AM very true, but he only has the turboxs midpipe. he has the espilier (sp) cat-back, which is one that im looking into
link for that catback??? is it a single or a dual?
but as i said, you need to hear stuff in person...
beers
chetrickerman 12-01-2007, 03:02 AM i believe its a dual, but dont quote me on that. but yea, in person is soo much better. thats why i like the mazdaspeed cat-back. its so nice and deep.
swoope 12-01-2007, 03:23 AM i believe its a dual, but dont quote me on that. but yea, in person is soo much better. thats why i like the mazdaspeed cat-back. its so nice and deep.
mazdaspeed = corksport...
beers
Spinning Sushi 12-01-2007, 07:16 AM Sounds like this? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9SEBUygZqFk
chetrickerman 12-01-2007, 12:03 PM kind of yea
guess i wont go with mazdaspeed
Brettus 12-01-2007, 12:14 PM did you have a look down the pipe chet ? All resonators are not equal . Some have a saw tooth that protrudes into the airflow while others just have holes in the walls . The sawtooth kind are more effective as a resonator but will reduce flow slightly.
chetrickerman 12-01-2007, 06:45 PM i looked down it, and it only has holes in it.
thanks charles. now i just have to find one cheaper than 600 bucks
chetrickerman 12-01-2007, 06:52 PM ok, google it is. no point in putting a WTB. no one ever reads them
mysql101 12-01-2007, 06:57 PM my midpipe is catless but has a resinator. the resinator is nothing more than a bunch of triangle looking things that stick out slightly from the wall, forming a pattern.
anyway, here's a bunch of videos, same car, different exhausts. You can hear catless midpipe + stock exhaust. It sounds good:
http://rotaryinsider.com/rx8-3.html
chetrickerman 12-01-2007, 07:03 PM hmm, so far rx7store is the cheapest with $670, but i did find an SP2 for $550
my resonator looks nothing like a bunch of triangles, just a bunch of holes
mysql101 12-01-2007, 07:05 PM no matter how raspy you think it sounds with a stock exhaust, it will sound FAR worse with an aftermarket exhaust since they do not muffle as well. In my URL above, I show stock + catless, catless + borla, and it's so loud that 2,000 rpm driving can be heard across my entire neighborhood.
mysql101 12-01-2007, 07:06 PM btw, the hks legamax with a catless midpipe didn't sound to bad. but the borla with catless (on a NA car) was horrible.
Rx8urZ 12-01-2007, 07:10 PM dude you should have got the rp supercat w/ stock exhaust like i did its perfect...its way deeper than stock on idle and sounds just a little more agressive than stock when you mash the throttle..im trying to upload some vids but having problems
chetrickerman 12-01-2007, 07:15 PM cant take it back now haha.
damn, all this controversy. thanks mysql, but too bad that those are with the B&B midpipe and not the rx7store midpipe
chetrickerman 12-01-2007, 07:22 PM also, the ricey raspy-ness is only at 1/2 throttle and mid-range rpms. up top it sounds better. and down low it sounds stock
chetrickerman 12-01-2007, 08:24 PM oooo, i found a turboXS catback for $448
Mazurfer 12-01-2007, 08:38 PM oooo, i found a turboXS catback for $448
Chet....it costs how much?
http://blog.advoor.net/wp-content/uploads/2007/09/panda.gif
Just been wanting to use that pic!
Sound like a decent price, but I'm not real sure?????
chetrickerman 12-01-2007, 08:46 PM HAHA!!!! its a better price than all the other catbacks, but i dont know how good it would sound with the midpipe
Spinning Sushi 12-01-2007, 08:46 PM also, the ricey raspy-ness is only at 1/2 throttle and mid-range rpms. up top it sounds better. and down low it sounds stock
I think it's because only 4 ports are open. Do you notice a strange sound/noise when it hits about 4000-4500 RPM? Usually, it sounds better after that but if you listen carefully, you can hear the ports open up with the midpipe. :)
chetrickerman 12-01-2007, 08:47 PM hmm, never listened for that. but the ricey-ness goes away at higher rpms
Spinning Sushi 12-01-2007, 08:48 PM When I had mine on, that was the first thing I notice... I punched my friend when he said "OMG! I can hear VTEC kick in" when all the ports, 5 and 6, open up...
chetrickerman 12-01-2007, 08:50 PM haha . . . Vtec kick in
chetrickerman 12-01-2007, 09:15 PM so im thinking of going with the SP2, seeing as it sounds pretty good with the stock cat. but i dont know how loud its going to be with the midpipe
chetrickerman 12-02-2007, 08:44 PM so does anyone have a greddy SP2 cat back with a midpipe?
G3tR3DDY2GR3DDY 12-03-2007, 07:31 PM sorry it took so long... phone screen isnt working for some reason so i cant press the stupid record button... i have this from a while ago going through a tunnel..
http://www.bigfilehost.com/en/file/1502/Recording3-wav.html
this is the only way i know to upload audio??? any other options?
chetrickerman 12-03-2007, 07:43 PM i have no idea how to use that site.
chetrickerman 12-03-2007, 07:46 PM ok, got it. were you in a tunnel? sounds good
G3tR3DDY2GR3DDY 12-03-2007, 08:05 PM yes i was... thats was second gear pull.... the raspyness in my case actually sounds better i think.. its not a ricey rasp its got a nice tone to it... kinda like a high pitched version of a hooker who smokes gurguling sperm if you can imagine what that sounds like... :eyetwitch
chetrickerman 12-03-2007, 08:26 PM hahaha :lol2: :lol2:
it sounds good. someone from mazsport let me in on a little secret, so im just gonna stick with my midpipe for now
G3tR3DDY2GR3DDY 12-03-2007, 08:29 PM um... pm me the secret... shhhh!
chetrickerman 12-03-2007, 08:35 PM not yet, but i will tell you when its time
G3tR3DDY2GR3DDY 12-03-2007, 08:52 PM so um... now??
chetrickerman 12-03-2007, 08:53 PM haha, in a couple days
