does not do well with short distances
does not do well with short distances
wel i just found out from my own experience that this car drinks up more gas if you drive only a short distance, drove back and forth 4 times to the store which is roughly 3 miles.
so total of 12 miles with a cople of stop lights, and gas needle went down two lines...WTF? I rrcently just passed 18 mpg, and im not driving any different, whats up with this?

I read the explanation before. Something about not running long enough to become efficient.
You can counteract this by going on long road trips on the weekend for no reason. Keep speeds around 90+ on these long road trips, and your mpg calculations will shoot way up.

By no means am I bashing the MPG on this car. I've learned to tolerate that within the year I've had this car. But this was the first time I've driven it for a short distance.
Mental note to self, drive Corolla when going to the store

So, lets say if I go to college the short way (street), it will be 8 miles. If I take the long way (freeway), it will be 18 miles. So, if I do the freeway, I'd improve from a sad 12-13 mpg on the street to about 20mpg on the freeway?
but in that case you should just worry about the actual number of gallons consumed. You could get 20mpg taking the highway but if u use more gas than taking the short way, why not just take the short way even if the 'mpg' sucks...
Thats true stop and go traffic really burns gas. But with the Rotary it takes a lot to start it and run anyway, for such a efficient sounding and moving engine its not that effiecient fule wise. But it does sound smooth as a slik spinner.
Just the nature of the beast the price you pay for technologoy. Deal em and weep.

this is true. I get better mileage on the highway then when i do driving short distances. I take a 15 mile trip up north here in houston every day and it barely tickles the tank, but when i take short distances around my area it guzzles!

That's why a "city" mpg rating is lower than a "highway".
