View Full Version : Renesis a good decision?
MichaelBrown 10-25-2007, 07:47 PM I plan on doing this conversion in about 3-4 years. possibly 5 depending on my financial situation. (btw, this has been done in germany. car performs like a champ!)
I want to take my 2,450 pound 2006 MX-5, put in a Renesis. Thus making my car slightly lighter, a whole lot more power, and definitely unique.
The NC MX-5 has a lot in common with the RX-8. infact, i have the sway bars from a manual rx-8 on my car right now (direct bolt on, and a very cheap upgrade)
I've announced this plan before, if you search my list of posts you will see them.
This question is about reliability. There has been some members who have had their engines traded out by Mazda because of Defects (granted, this was in the earlier years). I'm afraid that if i put a Renesis in my car, and it fails, i'll be up the creek without a paddle.
So my question is. My car is a 2006, so i can only put 2006+ engines in the engine bay (emission laws, etc) and yes, i will be putting a catalytic converter, emissions testing, etc. but back to the question:
What are the odds of a 2006+ engine failing?
Wild Style 10-25-2007, 08:03 PM Very slim as the early engines' problems were brought about by poor OMP volumes. With a 2006, and the attendant PCM, those issues should be solved. There is a good chance that Mazda will be revamping the OMP for the '08 models but I don't know if that would be a retrofittable swap/mod. Either way, you should be good.
what is OMP and PCM mean?

Oil Metering Pump (controls amount of oil injected in the combustion chamber)
Powertrain Control Module ( the cars brain, controls more than just the powetrain)
and to the starter of this thread My early build 04 has over 100,000 miles (http://www.rx8club.com/showthread.php?t=124921) on the original engine. Take car of your car and it should take care of you.
8 Maniac 10-25-2007, 08:28 PM one thing to consider is that by that time the 16x engine should be out. assuming there wouldnt be too many issues with fitting a 16x instead of 13b-msp but I could be wrong. Just something to consider.

Supply will be low, demand will be high(Wouldn't you want to throw one in your 8?) and therefore cost will be HIGH for a while. They made enough SS's for the Renny to be fairly well available.

I am completely in love with the Renesis. a lightweight rotary with a high rpm and no turbo.
My car would basically become the lighter (already is), faster, and better handling (already is) Mazda version of the S2000.
I wouldn't even do any mods. 240HP with less weight, why would i need to?
mdw1000 10-25-2007, 09:08 PM Please keep us posted on your progress. I would love to have the resources to do what you are doing someday (put a renesis into a 3rd Gen MX-5).
eddiec727 10-25-2007, 09:30 PM your mx5 is sick and swappin a renesis would be even sicker.. goodluck and keep us updated.

wouldnt quite be 240 hp, but not too sure exactly what it dynos at (engine dyno). I know most are getting ~190 @ the wheels though. Just saying it's something to consider, especially since it's gonna be a bit before you actually do this project. The 16x is essentially the renesis II. Slightly larger, direct injected and possibly more reliable (wont know till it's released). I'm going to assume that it has the same redline and wont be much heavier, but seeing as I have little basis for those assumptions, dont quote me. Mazda has quoted 300 hp as their goal for the engine I believe, so that's a nice ~70 hp extra out of the engine. Time will tell. Either way, nice idea for a project. I'd like to see this, as well as the lotus (whoever that was), fitted with a renesis, should be interesting
