Just wondering if there are any amateur or professional photographers here? Just wanted a space to share all kinds of pictures (other than cars), ideas, techniques, etc.

Currently I have a 3 year old Konica Minolta DiMage A200. It does the job for now but I have urge to step into a DSLR.

Some samples throughout my life. Not in any order.

here's some of mine. using a Konica Minolta Dimage X60 that i bought when i went to Singapore. still trying to work on the exposure settings. i've never done any editing to my photos so far either. they came straight from the camera to photobucket. as you can tell i like baseball.

I shoot with a Canon 20D. I have three lenses: 17-55 f/2.8 IS, 70-200 f/4L, and a 300 f/4L. When I flash, I use a Speedlite 430EX - except for the swings at the fair photo - that was the on-board, pop-up flash. :)

I am not a fan of post processing

You and Ansel Adams are NOT alike in that opinion. :)

Post-Processing is at LEAST half of what it means to be a photographer. Ansel would spend hours and hours in the dark room getting thing just right. :)

dmp: a lot of your shots could benefit from an even wider lens

and as far as post processing goes, I believe photos without post processing are more natural. However, some effects cannot be achieved without post processing. I just feel that my photos become somehow "tainted" after photoshopping.

Not only is dmp one of the best photographers on this forum, he lives in one of the best states for taking pics and drives the best color 8! :)

As for post processing. In my opinion Ansel Adams was more of a technical genius. His work is reflected today every time you use Photoshop and change the levels, curves and contrast. I even use it while taking pics by using the histogram to make sure my levels are correct then adjusting further in photoshop. Photoshop is the darkroom of today without chemicals.

An artistic photographer can take images that are creative and in many cases do not need a lot of post processing. To be able to extend the creativity with technical skills in Photoshop is just an extension of the photographer/artist skills. It is possible to be a photographer and artist but not every photographer is an artist. Post processing in my work (advertising for a manufacturing company) is a requirement due to the fact that it is either presented in print or on the web. I don't think I have ever taken a photo that did not need to be adjusted in some way.

this one too but not as beneficiary

I think natural scenes can generally benefit from an as wide or wider angle of view lens than human eyes.
You said you have a canon 20D which with the 1.6x FOV crop. Your widest lens is that 17-55mm zoom. 17x1.6 is really 27.2mm in 35mm film equiv.

If only I had enough money for the 7-14 olympus 4/3 lens...

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2322/2072207467_1ebbd30379_o.jpg
this one too but not as beneficiary

That was was taken at 55mm, IIRC. :)

Righto! Except I only like photos wide enough to show context w/o hiding the subject. Thanks for your input.

I can install a shower head and I do have a set of tools.... does that make me a plumber?
Does it mean you carry a SLR camera means you are a photographer?

Here's one of mine of my bike in the driveway. Look at that "hump" in the background right in the middle of the seat.

I use a Canon Digital Rebel XTi with a 28-135 IS lens for most, and I switch to a 10-22 wide angle, and the 100-400L for telephoto. I also have a 105 macro, I used for fun.

I took those pictures at the Grand prix of Houston, that was the 1st MX5 cup race of the season at reliant park. It was some great racing live, 2 cars came around turn 1 side by side and 1 went into the tire wall. It then went around the track 2 more laps with it's door flapping open at turns until it was black flagged.

I was watching the season replay of MX5 on speed last sat as well, they're doing 2 races each saturday in Dec.

The lightning shots were done on slide and print film. By the time I had good digital gear, I'd grown tired of just shooting lightning.

Most folks don't understand that out here in the desert, it's highly unlikely thta lightning follows any path other than rain to the ground. It simply just doesn't jump through the air like it does in areas of much higher humidity. This makes it "safer" to shoot, though there are no guarantees either way. Where it rains hard, that's where you point the camera! Get it? :)

I have boxes of lightning photos here... but I no longer have a slide or flatbed scanner. Besides, car photography pays better! LOL

I have a few pics of my journeys through the wilderness, but this was back in 2000 when I had a killer 3.3MP Minolta. I also had no photo skills at all. The second barn house was right behind my own about 75 yards aways. When we moved in it was spring/summer, but when the foliage fell that's when I noticed it. Very creepy place. Wish I took pics of the inside.

Thanks! I actually got rid of the original color shot because my white balance was so screwed up from an overcast day. The B&W was all I could do to save it :(

Pretty much. Each of us held a cut piece of cardboard then I just PhotoShopped the other pics in. The idea came from someone on fredmiranda.com so as much as I'd like to take credit, it wasn't mine---so go ahead and use it! A warning though; the xmas card it was on was a HUGE hit and now I have no friggin' idea how I'm going to top it next year!

I was on my way back from Lowes today, and saw a huge hawk on the side of the road chowing down on a dead opposum...it was sort of gruesome, but really cool! I flew back to my house and grabbed my camera, hoping he would still be there...he was done eating, but I got some cool shots of him in a tree....I got ~10-15 feet away from it. I'm not a photographer, but I love taking pics...one of these days, maybe I'll figure out how to do this instead of banging on a computer every day for a job!

Great pics! Just an advice, try pumping up saturation on your camera to max when taking pics like those above. I think that will help. If not, you can always desaturate!

That 8 looks bad ass like that DonJuan, nice work. Did you use a filter on the camera or was that photoshop? I would like to give something like that a try.

I also like the freeway there in Atlanta, what shutter speed did that take to get the lights like that?

Hawaii rocks too.

I was the editor of my high school yearbook last year, so I got some good experience with photoshop and cameras, but I don't really have any artsy stuff right of hand, so here are some pics from one of my trips to germany.

The first pic is Sans Souci in Potsdam, the second is the Bundestag in Berlin, and the third is Neuschwanstein/gau.

here's a panorama of Haleakala Crater on Maui, the worlds largest dormant volcano:

http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u257/joeltross/HaleakalaPanorama-1.jpg

and i know the cropping isn't very good on the bottom middle... but it gets the job done

Edit: just to get a perspective on how huge this crater is, from where I am standing to the opposite end is 7.5 miles! And yes i did do the 22 mile hike through there in 1 day which involved climbing 3300 vertical feet at the end via switchbacks and starting at 6 in the morning :(
But i highly recommend anyone visiting Maui to check out the Haleakala National Park for breathtaking scenery (literally)

There is a little white in the bottom right there, but that rail or whatever that pink thing in the middle is what he means I think. But, I don't mean to be an @$$ and critique it is an awesome photo! I have never been to a place like that in my life.

Ya I just don't know how to get rid of that rail. Anyway the 3 pics weren't supposed to be for a panorama but i thought they might work, so the image is a little off ie: the top left and bottom right

Thanks fahrfegneugen for the compliment. If you ever get a chance to visit Hawaii make sure you go to Maui or Kauai but stay away form the tourist spots, there is much better scenery elsewhere.

When i go in August I'll try to do an HDR of a bigass waterfall, i think that would look cool

I just used the clone stamp tool. Copied part of the background then pasted it in the place where the rail was.

Alright I was really bored this morning and decided to climb the hill behind my campus. I still need to buy a tripod; my hands are really shaky.

Yeah, but I am near Pullman, which is on the east side of the state. It is always green in Seattle, since it rains so much. Where I live it is just rolling wheat fields.

Here are a few pics I took in February last year on my grandfathers farm near Walla Walla. It basically looks like this here.

That is the biggest wind farm in the country from what I know, and then we have all of the hydro electric dams. Someone has to feed the energy hungry Californians, lol jk
