View Full Version : PARANOID! Should I get a lo-jack?
ToothFairy 10-18-2007, 11:17 AM Here is my problem: My sister's car was stolen a little over a year ago from the front of our house. It was recovered a week or two later, after being in an accident and being ditched on the side of the road. It had a huge round rubber tire mark on the driver's door, as if it had been bumped by a big-rig tire on the freeway. Not to mention the items that were left in the car were pretty sick :puke:
Moving on.... This morning my brother found that all four of his tires were slashed. I have a suspicion it was one of his friends. HOWEVER, I am about to bring home an Rx8 this weekend and I am paranoid as hell. My car won't be able to sit in a garage, it will be parked on the street in front of my house.
By the way, I live in a quiet neighborhood in freaking IRVINE, California but I know these things can and do happen anywhere. I also have heard Rx8's are not commonly stolen. After searching on here, I found a lot of people saying a lo-jack is a great investment, and a lot of people saying it isn't.
I'm thinking about just sticking a huge, obvious security camera pointed at my front porch, but I want some honest opinions from people who have a lo-jack/ vehicle tracking system and have tested it or had to use it before. Thanks!
Jedi54 10-18-2007, 11:30 AM is it worth it dollar wise? That's a tough one...BUT...what is peace of mind worth to you? I think a few hundred bucks to help you sleep better at night might be a good investment for you.
Ti8omgWee 10-18-2007, 11:32 AM I spent the extra money because my car is precious and I wanted the peace of mind.
ToothFairy 10-18-2007, 11:33 AM Good points, guys. It is a very precious car and I shouldn't be paranoid about this. I should probably get it done.
Jedi54 10-18-2007, 11:35 AM what does it cost to get?
DrewMan 10-18-2007, 11:35 AM what sort of stuff was left in your sisters car?
bruce_van 10-18-2007, 11:37 AM You should call Irvine PD and let them know they should patrol your area more often. Lord knows they don't have much to do other than giving people traffic citations.
I like the camera idea. Just make sure it's in an obvious location.
Toothfairy, I'm thinking of organizing another Irvine meet with some of the locals. You interested?

YES! Make sure it is after this weekend and I am there!!! :)
ToothFairy 10-18-2007, 11:40 AM what does it cost to get?
I heard it's about $500 +/- depending on what system and who installs it.
ToothFairy 10-18-2007, 11:45 AM what sort of stuff was left in your sisters car?
since you asked.... crack pipes, big hunting knife thing, lots of (slutty) clothes & dirty underwear, baby clothes, oh and USED CONDOMS. Looked like a prostitute was living out of it.
The cops didn't even look through it or take anything out. They just called my sister to pick it up and we spent a day cleaning it. Smelled like weed and sick prostitute. Left some good Bob Marley CD's though :) THANX
rglbegl 10-18-2007, 11:47 AM what does it cost to get?
our dealer cost was under $400. You can get it straight from lojack for a tiny bit less. Some dealers will discount it too, just to make a sale. ( but that means they are making money off of you somewhere else )
And Lojack will come to your house or work to install it for you. You should not have to go to the dealer
Myardor 10-18-2007, 11:59 AM Not sure how much it costs.
Seems like there are 2 "services" LoJack provides.
LoJack products
1. LoJack Stolen Vehicle Recovery System
A small, silent transmitter hidden in your vehicle allowing the police to track it if it's stolen.
2. LoJack Early Warning Recovery System
The new auto security system that contacts you if someone is moving your vehicle without your permission.
The previous owner of my car said he paid $1200.
I did not buy the directly from him. He traded it in and I bought it from car dealer.
Mine has Early Warning Recovery System
shaunv74 10-18-2007, 12:04 PM I want the Lo-Jack "Get the F#$% Out of My Car" system. Where it sends the occupants 10,000 volts through the seats.:lol2:

Hey marissa, I recommend you get one, because I think that would calm you down alot and give you an ease of mind, also doesn't hurt (except ur wallet) to get lojack in any car :)
grats on getting the 8 back girl!

***flashbacks of Robocop*** :D:
nycgps 10-18-2007, 12:14 PM Lo jack could be disabled pretty easily.
Its too common, thats why.
and its a *better than nothing* investment.
shaunv74 10-18-2007, 12:32 PM ***flashbacks of Robocop*** :D:
I want a 6000 SUX!!
If your car gets stolen you're better off not getting it back IMO. Just make sure you have gap insurance...
ToothFairy 10-18-2007, 01:15 PM woot! I have gap insurance THIS TIME around :)
rddragoness 10-18-2007, 01:34 PM I have the advanced keyless thing where the ignition won't turn over unless the credit card key is inside the car. Can that feature be overridden, and car stolen anyway? Just curious.
ToothFairy 10-18-2007, 01:36 PM ^^^ did this credit card key come with the '05 as well? I want one
Spyderis 10-18-2007, 01:36 PM It wouldn't hurt.
Although from what I've been told by a few people who've had lo-jack and their cars stolen, they came out to the car gone and the lo-jack boxamajig sitting on their driving/front step/lawn :(
ToothFairy 10-18-2007, 01:38 PM It wouldn't hurt.

so i'm guessing the lo-jack isn't hidden very well?
Spyderis 10-18-2007, 01:53 PM so i'm guessing the lo-jack isn't hidden very well?
Thats what I hear. But I guess it really depends on who installs it.
tajabaho1 10-18-2007, 01:54 PM thanks taj- that was a nice post of you :)
I'm being nice on the forums for a change, mostly cus I'm bored and tired of being flamed now, lol
nycgps 10-18-2007, 02:20 PM ^^^ did this credit card key come with the '05 as well? I want one
It does not work for 05
they have it for 07 Im sure. its an option.
nycgps 10-18-2007, 02:22 PM Lots of ways to disable lojack
one way is to jam the radio signal, its not hard, just a small transmitter with about 100 ft radius will do.
The other way is to drive it into an area with 2-3 walls, say, an underground parking lot, or somewhere far.
LoJack box could be spotted pretty easily, but usually what theifs will do is they will find the LoJack box first, cuz Lojack has a feature that if the car battery has been disconnected, it will phone home right away, not good for theifs.
BRGREEN8 10-18-2007, 02:40 PM check this website.
www.drdetailshop.com/v200.htm
this might be more effective than lo-jack.
Galaxy Gray 10-18-2007, 03:10 PM I forget the name, but there is a system that allows you to track your car from any computer, will text you if it moves at all, and you can even shut it off from your computer.
MTLbroker 10-18-2007, 03:15 PM I'm surprised that you have a choice. Up here, my insurance requires my car is equipped with lo-jack.... Plus, they give me an insurance rebate.
But then again, I do live in the car-theft capital of North America.
IMHO, it's a good thing to have.
rglbegl 10-18-2007, 03:29 PM It wouldn't hurt.
Although from what I've been told by a few people who've had lo-jack and their cars stolen, they came out to the car gone and the lo-jack boxamajig sitting on their driving/front step/lawn :(
That would mean that the crooks missed the other 2 lojack boxes. All 3 work independently. And even the vehicle owner is not allowed to see where the boxes go.
Uncivilizedracer 10-18-2007, 05:06 PM I have had 3 cars jacked 1 with lojack 2 with just a alarm thing about it is they start the trace when you notice the car is gone if your sleep they can get what they want by time you call it in( that was my case)
Paul_in_DC 10-18-2007, 05:29 PM so i'm guessing the lo-jack isn't hidden very well?
The units are hidden quite well. Even I don't know where they are.
LoJack Early Warning calls you at any/all numbers you choose if the car moves without the fob. (It works -- I forgot to give them the fob when I took it for servicing once. Within a couple minutes I got a call on my cell.) Then you have to call LoJack to confirm, and they activate it. From that point they say they average finding the car in about an hour.
In this area, I wanted the peace of mind.
ToothFairy 10-18-2007, 05:34 PM Thanks everyone! I appreciate the input!
lone_wolf025 10-19-2007, 12:23 AM Lo jack would be good, but if they really wanted to steal your car for more than a joy ride they'd just tow it. Personally I'd be cheap and pull a few key relays or fuses and shove them in the glove box or something. I doubt a thief would take the time to find their locations or be technical enough to figure it out. If you kept it in a baggie out of the car they'd go nowhere fast...but then if you lost the bag you'd be in the same boat.
ken-x8 10-19-2007, 12:58 PM IMHO, if you're paranoid the thing to do is to never leave personal valuables (including emotional investment in mods) in the car.
Lojack won't keep your tires from being slashed, as someone reported earlier in this thread. Seems like its benefit would be lower insurance rates, cutting crime in general, and maybe recovering the car before theives had a chance to make a mess.

That and the fact you live in So Cal.
By the time you find your car missing:
You've been sleeping for 8 hrs.
Been in the movies for 2 1/2 hrs
The range is only about 90 miles.
By that time it is chopped or in Mexico! Your only 80 miles from da border.
Besides who wants an RX 8 anyhow? It's not a 100k car, it's a slow dog.
Ask Ike he'll tell you how slow it is.
You'd be better off movung to a better neighborhood.
Slashed tires are from someone you know. Ever try to slash a tire?
Razz1 10-19-2007, 01:08 PM Really? I didn't know they work off the FOB key.
Hell for 4oo bucks do it.
But I bet you find out it's a lot more money than that.
rx8phase1 10-19-2007, 01:24 PM i agree with razz1 ur gonna spend so much money on lojack.by the time you get ur car back and that is IF you get ur car back all that will be left is the body of the car.just install some lights w sensorsin front of ur house
Paul_in_DC 10-19-2007, 03:25 PM Lo jack would be good, but if they really wanted to steal your car for more than a joy ride they'd just tow it. ...That would set off the LoJack sensor. It activates when the car is moved.
I heard that when the cops in this area get a LoJack alert, they actually make a game of it, seeing who can find the car first.

Will the Arlington radar/laser cops drop their regular duties to join in?
If so, where can I get a LoJack alert generator? :)
Ken
what I would do is get some ignition switches and that club thing that goes on your brakes. And lower insurance rates. Frankly, I don't think lojack works at all. I work for a company that moves cars cross country. One of the customers vehicle ended up being delivered a couple days late. Customer claimed his car is in Mexico and he said he got that info from the lojack operator. I told him his car is 40 miles away from his house. 1 hour later the customer got his car.

didnt they get the fingerprint guy to check out the car and take fingerprints and samples of DNA? im thinking that at least the prostitutes DNA would be on the outside of the condom (unless it was a gigolo).
the RX8 is small enough as it is and to actually attempt procreate in it is a feat in itself!

No one checked for fingerprints. Like I said, no one even took the time to look through the random crap that was in the car. We had to dispose a CRACK PIPE and someone's dirty panties. =/

What kind of friend does that :icon_no2:
I'd say get it, if you can afford to get one it leaves you no good reason to not get it.
