Hey guys,

Does the glove box have a light? There appears to be what looks like a rectangular piece of clear plastic if you just look up inside the glove box. That spot looks perfect for a light to go there, but there is no light when I opened the box :(

WHAT? the dealer lied to me and told me there is no light in the glove box??? So you're saying stock, it comes with a light in the glove box? Can you take a pic to show me? I want proof to show the dealer. Please and thank you.

Will do so tomorrow..................now, just in case, I have a 05 GT 6sp.............and I see you have an 07, but I don't see Mazda dropping that! :banghead:

Okay, I just went downstairs and took a screw driver to that clear plastic thing. There was a BULB inside it! Why did it not light up, I don't know. This is a brand new car, how could it have "burnt out" already?

Will talk to dealer tomorrow. They try to scam me!

They just didn't want to mess with it. I would still change it and put in an LED. Hell, I'm surprised you got the cover off that easy, it's actually one of the tougher ones to get off unless they have changed the design. Anyway, I need to go look now and see if I left the cover off after installing the 194 LED or whether I put it back on????? It may have looked better and more light with it off. I'll edit this when I get back in and let you know. BTW........it's the same bulb that you have in your doors, so if you really want to know if it's the bulb.......then you could just try one of those.................but since you are under warranty, let the dealer do it.

You do know that you have to have your lights at least on to the parking lights and/or headlights to have that glove light work righht? I forgot that little fact when I just went out and looked! oh...............I did put the cover back on, it must be the one in the trunk that I left off.

what the heck? Mazurfer.. you're saying the glove box only lights up when the engine is running and and the lights are turned on? That's the stupidest engineering I've seen. If someone were to access that box when the car is off, then there is no light??? I'm going to turn on the headlights to see if they work... can it be rewired to be turned on when opened?

Seriously, what kind of engineer came up with that idea for the glove box light to ONLY come on when the headlights are on?

BTW, it was easy for me, ebcause I used a swiss army (swing out screwdriver blade)...
so the entire length of my prying took is only about 4 inchs. There are 4 tabs to pry off.. easy..

:lol2: I don't know, but that's how mine is..........car doesn't have to be running, but lights must be on. I guess if you think about it.........90% of the time you would probably have the lights on in the car when you went into the glove. Guess they figured you'd get stuff out without lights 10%(when it was dark out) and didn't bother??????? Daytime doesn't matter.
Yes, you could re-wire, but I'm not sure it's really worth it.

wait, when you say lights on, you don't mean the "light on" button near the sunroof controls right? You mean like, the headlights on?

Yep, you must at least turn the headlight switch to the first position.......so that your radio/center console lights come on.

Okay, I just verified... it works. WOW that is the ABSOLUTE GAYNESS SH*T I've seen... it comes on ONLY when your lights (first toggle) is on... and you know what's more gay.... the glove box light is on indefinitely; even when closed. Mazda skimped out on the sensor that turns on only when open. What a waste of bulb life and battery!

Agreed, but not much battery loss since your headlights or interior lights would drain the battery much more quickly..........since those have to be on. :)
Pretty funny when you think about it.............it is kinda stupid of them.

I'm an engineer myself... I know this is poor engineering. (thoughtless engineering)

Yep, I do Design, Product, and Test Engineering on high-rel Military/Space ASIC's and all sorts of other commercial/automotive IC's.............I'd never let it out that way!

WTF, there IS a glove box light. Never opened my glove box while driving at night, so who would have known? That's one of the first things I noticed, Oh "No" glove box light.
Definitely a candidate for a rewire mod.
Crazy design.

Mazda just didn't feel like paying for a switch on the latch, I suppose.

It's kind of hard to believe, I mean when you have the dim blue led 'nightlights' on the gauges when you open the doors (pretty cool).
Maybe it was the same guy who thought up the fuel door without a strap hanger.

actually you can dangle the strap using the fuel door hook.

It's still against the paint, plus it's kinda in the way of the pump handle.

My '93 MX-6 glove box is the same way; the headlights (or at least the park lights) have to be on. Looks like a Mazda tradition!
