I had the oddest experience the other day. I was on a cardio machine at my gym, when these two weird guys come in and start messing with the treadmill in front of me. One guy stood in front and used what looked like a Handycam to videotape the other guy. They both looked kinda scroungy and rough, and the guy on the treadmill was short, kinda pudgy and...strangely familiar. It wasn't until the guy on the treadmill opened his mouth that I realize it was Pauly Shore. He was in town doing a gig at the new comedy club, and was filming something for his routine, I guess.

I am not in the habit of harassing icky-looking B-level celebrities, so I just left him alone. Apparently no one else recognized him- I thought the girl next to me was laughing at him, but then I realized she was watching Oprah on the gym's TVs. When I left, Pauly and his friend were downstairs lying on the floor in front of the womens' locker room flailing around doing god knows what.

As I walked out, I asked the guy behind the desk if he realized Pauly Shore was on the floor in front of the womens' locker room, and all he could say was "That was the REAL Pauly Shore??" Since I assume the idiot had to check Pauly's ID when he paid to get in, I can't imagine how he thought it was a FAKE Pauly Shore. Or even thought about the complete uselessness of impersonating a low-level celebrity who's doing the comedy club rounds in small cities...it was a very surreal experience, in any case.

Anyone else got any weird celebrity experiences?

Just some bands I've met.

Drummer of Yellowcard, The Ataris, Thrice, Jimmy Eat World, Midtown, The Starting Line

... Dennis Rodman, the entire Laker Summer Pro League team (lucky enough to have a media pass), Orlando Jones (while taping Evolution on my campus), lead singer of the Descendents and Reel Big Fish...

.. Julie and Melissa from Real World New Orleans at a Jimmy Eat World show at the Glasshouse..

Snoop Dogg at a Summer Pro League game

Mel Gibson, coming back from Australia. He's shorter than I thought he'd be. Waited next to him at baggage claim. Guess that's not weird, though...

Met Bill Clinton twice. Drew Carey in my home town of Kent, OH., in a bar, my table played against his in one of those video triva things. He wasn't wearing his glasses and he signed a $1 bill for me after he bought my table a round of beers. We lost to him and his buddies by 2 points. And Jack Lambert, famous linebacker for the Steelers in the 70's. He graduated from my high school.

In a music store that I frequent the salesman asked me to strum a few chords on Strat while this other customer, who looked like a street-person with a stocking cap on, could play a different guitar. Something about how the two instruments played together. Turned out to be a real friendly, pleasant person. After he left I asked the salesman and he said the guy was Peter Tork of the Monkeys. Then it came to me. I could then recognize Tork's features on this, much older, grungy face. I guess that's kinda like meeting a celebrity.

Met some sports people, but most americans would have no clue who they are :)

Merv Hughes gave a talk at the casino in Darwin, met him afterwards and had a tennis ball signed by him (didn't have a cricket ball handy)

Evonne Cawley - australian tennis player who won wimbledon. She lives in my home town now in Australia. Her daughter went to the same high school as me for the last two years (fine as hell).

Wally Masur and Darren Cahill.
Masur made the semi finals at the U.S Open. Cahill did too, but is now more well known for being Andre Agassi's coach. I was lucky enough to play an exhibition tennis match with the two of them. Played with Cahill as my partner against Masur and another pro.

Thomas Muster (you guessed it, another tennis player - although he is Austrian!). He retired to Noosa Heads (my home town). Saw him walking along the boardwalk one day.

I met one of the kings of Malaysia way back in 1992 on a tennis trip to malaysia. Couldn't tell you his name though or if he is still around (hey I was 14 at the time).

And lastly Luke Jensen (of the Luke and Murphy Jensen doubles team) was on my league tennis team. He's on tv all the time commentating.

None of them weird, and almost all of them tennis related, but oh well :P

By far the wierdest celeb I encountered was Beetlejuice, of Howard Stern fame.

We were in the Houston airport & he was trying to buy some candy at a store...had the most difficult time picking out candy, had little concept of 'waiting in line', then did not have enough money on him to purchase.

It was a very entertaining moment in time.

I met Prince at an autograph-signing session at a record store in Atlanta a few years ago. He was incredibly shy and quiet in person, and even smaller than you'd imagine for someone who's 5'4" tall. He was very delicate-looking, like he was made of porcelain or something.

I guess that's not really a weird celebrity encounter so much as an encounter with a weird celebrity ;)

Aussie77 the tennis player...ever come stateside for any training, satelites or challengers?

Anyway, players I know or have met...

Mal Washington, Todd Martin belong to the same tennis clubs my parents do - both very good guys

Martina Hingis at Saddlebrook Academy in FL

Mardy Fish - back when we were junior players

...then there was Jeff Tarango, he told myself and a friend to go F*** ourselves because I was cheering for his opponents during a doubles match.

Oh, and Elara, don't be so hard on Pauly Shore.

Biodome is right up there with the likes of such classics as Casablanca, Psycho, On the Waterfront...you all know the classic films of which I speak...and let's not forget Son-In-Law.

As far as I'm concerned, you missed a legitimate chance to kiss-up to one of the greatest of all time. What's your excuse?;)

Aussie77,

Sounds good, I haven't played in about 2 years. I always contemplated trying to go on the circuit after my college years, but by the end of my freshman year I was burned out.

Not that I thought I was going to become a professional - my goal at the time was to make it somewhere between 600-800 on the ATP. And as far as I'm concerned, that's challenging enough.

Good luck to you, makes me want to go out and start playing again...

You forgot Encino Man! Comeon, THAT is a true classic!

Perhaps if he looked like he'd had a shower in the past week, I might have said something. He was probably feeling pretty stupid because no one recognized him.

i carried BB King's guitar for him once from the bus to his hotel room. He handed Lucille to me as he came off the bus and said "would you mind carrying that to my room for me?" plus he gave me tickets to his show. I finagled a piano and a space to practice in for Robert Goulet, when he was touring with a production of Camelot. Met the guitar player for Joan Jetts "BlackHearts" band, Ricky Byrd at a singer/songwriter showcase in New York. Met the drummer for Black Sabbath at a mini mart in Long Beach California. there is a few others.

Encino Man, huh...

Brendan Fraser surely stole the show, that was an Oscar worthy performance for him. For Pauly, it was another valiant effort overlooked by the creton critics.

Consider Encino Man the passing of the torch from one legend, Shore, to another, Fraser.;)

I sat directly behind Sean Connery and his wife at the theater about 14 years ago to watch his mate Richard Harris in Pirendello's Henry IV (best acting I have ever seen BTW). During the internission his wife lost an earring - it was like prayer time at a mosque as the whole audience dropped to the floor to search for it. I found the item under her seat and handed it to her and he said thanks. Without makeup he looked 10 years older than he does in his recent movies, but still oozed charisma from every cell.

Other than that I bumped into Bob Geldof wandering through Soho Square by himself one lunchtime and initially thought he was a tramp in his dirty and ripped denims.

John Travolta at Disneyland and an airport with his jet and wife Kelly.
Don Henley - Eagles at Blink182 (talked for awhile at intermission. Very cool, smart, and music-focused)
Sly Stallone - local Italian restaurant. (The guy is still SHORT!)
Michelle Pfeiffer - HS reunion(entourage overprotective)
Gwen Stefani - my own HS reunion
Steve Tyler from Aerosmith - Guitar Center (very relaxed dude)
Arnold and Maria - The Improv 2 years ago. Class act.

I slept with the GoGo's bass player. What's her name, Kathy Valentine I think? PICS! :D

Had dinner with zz top when they were in town. Their manager insisted that someone who knew the town take them to a good restaraunt and after I drove them there they insisted I stay! No one recognized them because they are so "iconic" that people look at them and say "hey that looks like zz top, hahah, but anyway" then they go about their business because its too impossible that they are here in our town wai...

I saw Michael Stipe at the Delta Crown room at Hartsfield. He was having a little spat with a friend of his, so we didn't approach him.

John-boy from the old TV show The Waltons was getting really loud (and I assume really drunk) at the table next to me at a Melrose restaurant in LA one time.

I saw Kathy Lee at a Nantucket ice cream parlor once. She was dressed discreetly with sunglasses and a big hat, but at the same time was drawing a lot of attention to herself by yelling across the store at Cody, "What smoothie flavor do you want!"

I went to a Hawk's game once and some dirtbags were in our seats. I started to give them a hard time and kick them out, but settled on the seats behind them. Turned out it was Chris Robinson and a bandmate from the Black Crowes.

And finally, I was grounded for a week for ditching my mom to try to find Steve Austin (not Stone Cold, the 6million dollar man) at a mall appearance. Turned out he was a no-show, but I did get Oscar Goldman's signature (the head of the OSI).

I don't know if any of my encounters can be considered weird but they were defintely cool.
I met Kim Thyul, the guitarist from Soundgarden (I've probably mis-spelt his name.) at mardi gras in the late 90s while their band was still together. He was just strolling through the crowd with what appeared to be 3 bodyguards.I approached him and complimented his work,we chatted for about 5 minutes.Very cool!
I then briefly met Scott Weilland and Dean DeLeo of Stone Temple Pilots (my favorite band) in 2000 at a small private radio show, having won a contest.
And then finally I've been friends with 'The Barbarian Brothers',
twins David and Peter Paul for 19 years now. These guys are totally funny, quite intelligent and a bit whacked out. They are more of a riot in real life than in the movies. By the way, Peter had a 93 RX-7 for a while.
BTW I was14 when I met the twins.

I used to be stationed in Long Beach CA with the Navy, by LA. The movie studios would come around and recruit sailors to be in movies when they needed extras with short hair. I signed up to be an extra in Hunt for Red October and before it was over I had a speaking role in a scene with James Earl Jones . If you see the scene about USS Reuben James, we shoot a torpedo to "pretend" to sink Red October, then James says "Call the Dallas." I'm the guy on the console wearing headphones and I say "Dallas, this is Reuben James!" I still get royalties from that movie.

Then, I was in a movie with James Caan and Bette Midler called "For the Boys" filmed at some park north of LA. I got into Mr. Caan's trailer to present him with some hokie trophy for having so many sailors in his movie. He is a very warm and engaging person; played the drums for us onstage to keep us entertained between takes. Bette is lovely and extremely shy. Acting, no problem but she was extremely embarrarrassed to dance or entertain us when not acting. No royalties there as I didn't get to speak.

Met the first President Bush when he came aboard the USS Missouri, the Navy's last battleship, in Pearl Harbor on the 50th anniversary of the attack. I was the officer on deck when he came aboard. Also, Steven Segal when he came aboard to scope out the ship before filming Under Siege. Came with a hot blond. Saw him again a few years later at the Pentagon. Nearly literally bumped into Colin Powell there when he was Chairman of the Joint Chiefs. Very embarrassing as we were both in uniform and I didn't even salute (I honestly didn't see him until my wife told me that I almost collided.)

I was supposed to meet Fidel Castro in Sept when my son't HS football team went to Cuba to play a game, but El Presidente was a no-show. bummer. Such brush with destiny.

Cool, I love that movie. Incidentally, my dad received president Bush during the Cartagena summit (91 I think). There is a cool picture of president Bush, my dad, and two saluting marines standing by the presidential helicopter. My dad is a retired Colombian Admiral. I was in the Navy prior to my departure to the U.S.

I bumped into Johnny Cash at a jewlery store in Alaska when I was very young - not paying attention. He was replacing a watch battery. My parents about freaked out - guess they were big fans.

And I saw Vince Neil of Motley Crue at a casino in Las Vegas with his playboy playmate pal.

And I met the lead singer for Type-O-Negative in a dark alley after the show. he was really morbid and I was glad to have a few friends with me.

met joe frasier at geets dinner in willamstown, NJ. Real nice guy, gave me an autograph for my father, talked to my brother and I for a good half hour. I called him "champ" and his face lit up like a kid at xmas.

Roy Jones in the lobby of the Atlantic City convention center, the night of a duran fight. A real class act, much diffrent then the why he acts on tv. again, talked about boxing with me for a long time. Very soft spoken, strongest handshake you could imagine.

My blood father was a record promoter for rca records in the late 60's and early 70's. He promoted the 5th dimension, but I frankly do not remember them at all.

There are some great stories in here...

I met Robert Englund (Freddy Krueger) by accident once at the Beach House in Laguna Beach. My date and I decided to wait at the bar for our table. As we were sitting there my date leans over and says, "That's Robert Englund." I looked to my right, looked at the two dudes sitting right next to me. Turned back to her and said, "Who?"

She repeated, "Robert Englund, Freddy Krueger." OK... I was then thinking, "How the hell am I supposed to recognize the guy without the melted face and claws?" Anyhow, I looked again to see if I saw any resemblence. This time I kind of leaned forward, both guys looked right at me this time. I smiled and said something like "good evening."

I still didn't get it. I think Mr Englund thought I was a nut by that point. My date then said that he was the professor in a movie we had seen recently, Urban Legend. Then it clicked. By that point, however, Mr England and the dude he was talking decided to get my take on local rent in the area.

Apparently they knew someone just starting out in life who was looking to rent an apartment and they were trying to talk the person in to renting a little studio in Laguna Beach. They asked what I thought of living there vs. off the coast like Laguna Niguel.

We all shared another round of drinks, our table was ready, and we wish each other a good night. He was a pretty cool guy, though I never let on like I knew who he was or anything. I'm sure he was just trying to have a couple drinks in peace with his friend.

One that sticks out is : About 5 years ago in high school I was hanging out with some friends. We decided to go to my friend Haley's house down in Malibu. We hung out for a while and had a birthday party for her little sister, walked on the beach with her family, etc. I didn't realize my friends mom is Pat Benetar.

Let's see here:

Donald Rumsfeld (Secretary of Defense)- Saw him in passing (Said "good morning!" and kept going)

Paul Mooney (Comedian)- Actually shook his hand at a comedy show featuring him & a friend of mine

Allen Anthony (R&B singer)- Saw him at a club (didn't recognize him till he got on stage and started performing his new song!)

Kwame Brown (NBA player)- Saw him at a club (yelled out "hey Kwame" to confirm it was him and he came over and shook hands and went about his business which I thought was cool!)

Dana Stubblefield (NFL player)- Saw him at a club (bartender points him out to me and a friend and we just say "Oh! So it is! OK!)

Fabolous (Rapper)- Did I say this already, saw him at a club (Afterparty to a concert! There were a few other celebs there as well but he was within arms length of me and the only one of them that I actually saw there!)

Biz Markie (Rapper)- Again, saw him at a club (he was actually DJing at this particular club, shook hands with him, he was cool!)

Batista (WWE wrestler)- He was signing autographs at the DC auto show!

I know they aren't the biggest of celebrities but all were close enough to make contact with! I know there might be 1 or 2 more that I have encountered but I can't think of them right now!

I've met a few.

Siouxsie Sioux & Budgie at a club in LA when they released the Peekaboo single.

I've met many musicians because of my connections to the LA underground music scene in the '80's.

I also met Robin Williams in Spokane while he was filming Toys. He came into a retail clothing store I was managing and bought a ton of clothes. He was the funniest person I've had the pleasure of meeting. He cracked jokes and played with everything. I thought he would be more serious in person than he is on stage but I was wrong. That has to be the most memorable celeb I've met.

Funny, this topic came up as an 'ice breaker' in a business meeting I attended a few weeks ago. I couldn't recall anything then and I still can't recall anything.

Ah, Monster Magnet is a great band.

Well, me and my friends met Sean Connery last summer while we were hanging out in Fox studios (my roommate's uncle was a sound mixer there). He was doing something for league of extraordinary gentlemen. He does look a lot older without his makeup on, but he's still got the voice.

Let's see...oh yeah, Moses... Mr. Heston himself at an NRA meeting in my hometown. Man he looks feeble now, that was about a year and half ago.

Oh, and Jason Lee, the guy from Dogma, Mallrats, almost any Kevin Smith movie, he came in to Ironworks to get some barbeque about 20 min. before it closed. I just remember telling my roommate calmly "that's the dude from Dogma" and then like 5 seconds later Lee looked at me and that look they have when they're recognized came over him (you know, the deer in the spotlight look). But I didn't bother him cuz he had a female with him and I didn't wanna throw off his game.

Was in vegas and saw a gathering at a craps table so I went to the table thinking I might learn something about the game. The guy throwing the dice was worse then I was and I said laughing "dam dude you suck." which he replied smiling 'Ya I guess I'll have to make another movie to make up for my losses." Thinking that he was joking I said "well at the I'm rate going I'll have to make a another movie too" . I shook his hand and took off to met my girlfriend only to have her tell me that Leonardo "Mister king of the wolrd" de Caripo was playing somewhere in the casino. It finally dawned on me who that guy was and I told her where I saw him. I had to litterly sprint to keep up to her as she ran to craps table where I told her I saw Leo. By then he was gone and my she was calling me a liar and telling me how mean I was to be playing a trick on her. Thats when the dealer saw me and asked me when I was going to make a movie and if I was planing to do one with leo. Needless to say I signed 3 autographs even though I don't think they had a clue who I was but heard I was making a movie with leo. So I got my 2 mins of fame and got a weird celeb story. :D

When I was in the Marines back in the early 80's a buddy of mine and I would strip on the wknds at the Latin Lounge in Honolulu during "ladies only" night. Janet Jackson was there and struck up a conversation with my girlfriend at the time, afterwards we met up with her first husband (a real jackass, one of the DeBarges) and had a late dinner. About a week or so later JJ called me at my barracks and asked if I could go with her sight seeing...let's just say she is not nearly as innocent as she tryed to portray herself back then.

Also saw Sly Stallone at "Spats in Waikiki and Dolly Parton on the beach (hard to miss), Tom Cruise while he was filming a movie by our base. We were just coming out of this bush lined area and came across them, one of the producers used to be a Marine and offered us to eat at the buffet table, my Sergeant ate one of Tommy's bagels or something and he started yelling at us to get off his set, it took all three of to keep our sgt. from breaking his nose.

Evander Holyfield and I were bumped from the same flight early one morning a few months ago here in Houston and were told they would comp us a taxi to take us to another airport about 35 mins away, we ended up having lunch and drinks together along with his press agent and assistant, he is actually a very nice guy. I could still see the scar on his ear but wasn't going to ask him about it.

I used to work at a place called Cleveland House in Muskoka. (Its cottage country up here in canada....Beautiful)

Well, I served drinks on the beach there. Goldie Haun (Hawn), Kurt Russel, Rambo, and a couple others were there.

Kurt Russel told me I was a good kid!!!

wow that's awesome... i got to play with Antonio Daniels at a b-ball camp when i was about 14. super nice guy, and (obviously) a really really good player too.

i'll swear on a stack of bibles that this is true, but a friend of mine (he's a recent half-out-of-the-closet) once got hit on and almost picked up by the direct of X-Men while they were in town filming, i guess. anyways, he is apparently a really good kisser.

He is actually 4' 11" - Think about that for a minute or 2...

Ran into the Rockets' Maurice Taylor at the San Luis Hotel in Galveston, Texas. I also ran into Jeff Van Gundy, and Patrick Ewing. Ewing looked sad :(.

I was in the Country Buffet at the Bellingham Mall, Washington. There was this tall goofy looking guy with a ball cap sitting at a table with his kids. I caught a profile and he seemed familiar, I didn't figure out who he was until he walked past... Ryan Stiles from "Whose line is it Anyway?", and "Drew Carry Show". I didn't do the fan flipping out thing. But he heard me tell my wife who he was; he turned, smiled and winked. We just shut up till we left..., didn't want to distrub the guy with his kids.

My parents used to have an antique store in upstate new york, that town was lousey with stars, most of them weird. I've carried antique furniture for Mary Tyler Moore, Kevin Bacon.., more than a few b actors/stars. The coolest of all was putting something into the HUMVE for James Earl Jones, real nice guy.

Met Kristy Yamaguchi and Katerina Vitt at a skating event sponsored by Hatachi (my dad's company at the time). My brother and I have been on stage with Penn and Teller, my brother pulled a quarter out of Penn's ear, to a reply of "get out of here kid, you're bothering me".

Being a musician in the DC area's most popular variety band makes it common to have weird celebrity encounters.

May favorite is from back during Clinton's first term.
We were playing a private party at the VP residence (Naval Observatory) out by the pool house. It was for Al Gore and a small bunch of his college friends.
We had finished up and the sax player and myself were changing into street clothes in the pool house when Al Gore comes in to change the CD on the house music system. Some horrible new age crap.
Well, I make some small talk about the selection which is somewhat difficult because the sax player and I were more than half way to our underwear, alone in a room with the second most powerful world leader in the, well, world I guess.
He was cordial and finished up with the CD. He looked down and there, on the floor, frozen in what looked like total panic, changing his socks is the sax guy.
He looked up, met Al eye-to-eye and eeked out:
"Hi".
Al looked confused and walked out.

My sister met Will Smith, she said he was nice but maybe Jada just has him in check!

To add on to celebrity types I've met, me and a friend met Norman Wexler (Look up "Serpico") in Pentagon City Mall a few years back. He died shortly after that. He was a nice guy. Me and my friend were there in uniform and he just came up and started talking to us. We didn't know who he was at first and it was kind of strange because he was walking around in socks while carrying a flashlight all while in Sam Goody's. His driver confirmed who he was. He was definitely an interesting guy! Me and my friend were late getting back from our lunch break but they were understanding considering the situation.
