My friend bought a 2003 Cobra. Toward the end of the negociating he had to pay $1000.00 Gas Guzzling Tax.

Does this just apply in Texas? And did you guys have to pay it for the purchase of an RX8?

I did not have to pay a gas tax in WA.

Withe EPA ratings I believe you guys got in just under the gas guzzling tax, and I think it's federal rather than a state impossed tax. Anyone know where the cutoff is by chance?

Ike is right - federal tax - but I thought the RX-8's highway rating was 24.

The cutoff obviously must be 22 or 23 :-)

I was thinking it would be an averaged number between city and highway. The 23 MPG EPA rating was from C&D it may have been updated since then.

Lucky H2, they're over 6k lbs so the don't have to pay the 7k gas guzzler tax.

Makes me wonder if they weighted the thing and realized they were at 5800 lbs, so they added a random 201 lbs of lead somewhere just to get over that 6k limit.
