I was in a local music store a couple days ago picking up the new Static-X CD, and they had a CD playing in the store. I'd never heard anything like it before, and I bought it on the spot.

The group is The Mars Voltra, the CD is called "De-Loused in the Comatorium", and it's absolutely incredible! It's "trippy", with some Rush, Cult, and Queens of the Stone Age sounding influences, and vocals kind of like 36 Crazyfists! Very difficult to describe.

nothing can compare to The Scene

click me!! (http://www.arts-crafts.ca/bss)

you need realplayer to hear, but you can listen to all their recorded songs, which incidentally they never play at shows (too busy inventing new stuff), and never play the same show twice, with never the same members there... it's an entirely new slant on music making.

btw, their tour scedule is in that little flash window on the homepage... Vancouver on Nov 12th baby!!

One of my favorite CDs from the last couple years. You should also check out At The Drive-In's Relationship of Command, Mars Volta was formed from a couple members of that group and it's also a fantastic CD. I think the only CD I like better from last year was Interpol: Turn on the Bright Lights, which is another must have IMO.

I guess I'm old school punk. I'll stick to old TSOL, CH3, among others.

For the newer stuff I can't settle on anything. I seem to bounce in and out of Pennywise, Rancid, Bad Religion and others.

I'm now reading up on how to get more out of the bose system....

I don't really see Mars Volta as punk. Nor do I see TSOL or CH3 as oldschool, The Stooges, The Clash, The Ramones, Sex Pistols, New York Dolls, Roxy Music (the last two could be considered more Glam) etc., I look at that as oldschool. The Cali punk thing took off afterwards and had a whole sort of vibe and feel to it. To me the whole Cali punk thing didn't have the realness and grit that the original punks had. I take it you grew up in the OC in the 80s :p For modern punk I'll take Rancid or NOFX, and call me a poser if you like but I can't help but like Greenday. However none of them will ever effect me the way The Clash or The Ramones did and do.

It just seems like many people forget about classic punk (I can't believe I said that). I have a friend at work that knew nothing about The Clash, The Ramones or the Sex Pistols. He heard of the bands but little else. I was shocked since he likes Rancid and the Offspring I assumed he had knowledge of other bands. I brought some CDs in and turned him onto it.

I got my son listening to a Muddy Watters the same way. He's 8 and just loves the blues. We were flipping channels on the radio and he made me stop when he heard a station playing the blues. We listened to it for a long time. He was totally into it.

I agree with you on Greenday. I thought I was done listening to them until last week when I pulled out Kerplunk! Good stuff.

Given that I have, ummm, eclectic musical tastes (meaning I listen to a wide variety of music), here are a few of my favorite albums, in no particular order -- these are some I listen to over and over again:

Sevas Tra - OTEP (especially the song "Jonestown Tea" -- gives me chills!) (Metal)
Ivory - Teena Marie (R&B)
Vermillion - Three O'Clock (Alternative/Pop)
Eroica - Wendy & Lisa (Folk/R&B)
Tight - Mindless Self Indulgence (unclassifiable Punk/Metal/Dance)
Beauty - Ryuichi Sakamoto (New Age/Japanese Pop)
Clownie - Trespassers Will (Folk)
Rated R - Queens of the Stone Age (Garage/Stoner Rock)
Fluke - Rusty (Rock/Punk)
Slipknot [self-titled] (Metal)
Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness - Smashing Pumpkins (Rock/Pop)
Without You I'm Nothing - Placebo (Rock/Pop)
Peace Beyond Passion - Me'Shell Ndegéocello (R&B)
Renegades - Rage Against the Machine (Rock)
The Fragile - Nine Inch Nails (Rock/Industrial)
Ingénue - k.d. lang (Pop)
Rhythm Country & Blues (duets by country and R&B artists)
Motograter [self-titled] (Metal)
Vauxhall & I - Morrissey (Pop)

I highly recommend any and all of these; while the term "classics" is overused and may not apply to some of them, they're all excellent albums.
