View Full Version : How big's the engine in this car?
I had my RX-8 refueled yesterday at a full serve gas station in the middle of nowhere, Oregon. It was quite a funny experience so I thought I'd share it.
The guy who filled my tank was something of a car nut. The conversation went something like this:
"How big's the engine in this car?"
"Well, that's kind of hard to say. It was a rotary engine so you can't really compare the capacity to a piston engine."
He's thinking "what kind of idiot do we have here who doesn't know the cubic capacity of his sports car", so he tries some numbers to jog my memory:
"Two point six, three litre?"
"Well, it's 1.3 litre, but it's a rotary, so..."
This clearly didn't make any sense to him. Here's a sports car with a freekin' 1.3 litre engine? So he tries a different approach:
"What's the speedo go to, then?"
"Well, it's got a digital speedo, so there's no maximum"
Now that I think about it, the digital readout can probably display up to 199 speed units (mph/kph).
He finished filling the tank and I while was calculating my mileage (20mpg, mostly 70-80mph highway) he came back to look at the instrument panel to find the maximum speed. He sees "10" on the rev counter, the speedo was reading zero of course. He said "Great car!" and shaking his head went off to deal with another customer wondering about this 10mph, 1.3 litre sports car.
I think the RX-8 totally messed his mind up, which after all is one of the joys of owning a rotary engined car!
Love it! Love it! Love it!
LOL, I believe you can go 999, definitely 299!
goodyrx8 10-14-2003, 02:43 PM Great story, thanks for sharing:D
RobDickinson 10-14-2003, 04:51 PM lol great story :)
199kmh is about 120mhp, so spedo goes over that , car can get to 240kph or so (140mph). I guess we ask acosta racing one day soon .
Doh, of course I should have done the mph to kph conversion and realized that it goes over 199 speed units! That's a nice big number in any units :-)
cueball 10-14-2003, 06:15 PM Wonder what kind of car he drives?;)
P00Man 10-14-2003, 06:56 PM i believe that the speedo can go up to 999

thats not a big deal, my truck (96 F150) has over 250k on it now. A friend of our family has a buick (i think) with over 300k. Also I have heard of many Rx7 engines lasting over 250k. Car engines can last a long time if you take care of em. I'm sure in the future we will hear of 8's with 200k miles and more.

Cwsmith 10-15-2003, 08:49 PM Oh and Mikeb i see that you have reached an ENOURMOUS post count of 3000. WOW
j1mb0x99 10-16-2003, 07:16 AM 430k.... wow. Now thats a long lived engine. Think it will make to a half mil? That kind of reminds me of Al Bundy's car on "Married with Children." His made it to a million or something like that. That show is funny.

Yeah, I liked it when he sold the heap, and bought it back for more money with the speedo rolled back so it seemed like quite the deal. There are some great quotes in there.

Anything over 200K is impressive to me. You ever hear about the guy with the 1966, or so, Volvo P1800 with 2,000,000 miles on it. That's the most impressive thing that I've ever heard.

zoom44 10-16-2003, 06:09 PM it's not the size that matters.... :oi mean it's not quantity but but quality that matters. same goes for the renesis (see how i got that back to topic ;) )
