View Full Version : Anyone know what type of spider this is? goodyrx8 10-14-2003, 10:00 AM Check is this baby. It's body is about a 1/2 inch across. I hate spiders  compaddict 10-14-2003, 10:28 AM I don't know but I have this two-inch monster living in the eve of my front door! Vince goodyrx8 10-14-2003, 10:31 AM I've been doing a little research since my post and I believe it is a garden spider, nothing exotic, but still creepy. It made for a nice avatar, what do you think? That thing in your eves is worse. RX-GR8 10-14-2003, 10:34 AM it almost looks like it has a rotor symbol (triangle) on its abdomen. Foureagles 10-14-2003, 11:09 AM Goody: I don't know the Latin name; we just call 'em "brown spiders" here in SC -- creative, eh? They're apparently pretty smart critters, like most predators. I think of them as the wolves of the insect world, and offer them their due respect. One (I call him Pete) recently threw up a quick web spanning from our balcony handrail to the header, and caught 26 flying insects in a few hours. Though this was of obvious benefit to me, I knew that My Dear Wife wouldn't care for it, so I started "training" him. By removing a couple of strands of web at a time I convinced him in a few days to keep his territory entirely within the roof gable where he's grown fat & presumably happy. {{{{ Elara 10-14-2003, 11:12 AM Goody, a friend of mine has a bunch of those all over his yard, and as far as we can tell from looking them up, you're right, they're just garden spiders. The darn things look like they could eat a bird, they're so big! Nice picture btw. Shows the colors and markings ont he spider really well. Gyro 10-14-2003, 11:30 AM Us New Englanders would FREAK if we saw one of those suckers crawling around. Our spiders are much more tame (and less furry). The biggest ones are the one in the picture.....still pretty scary looking though. We have lots of "daddy long legs" also. It must our cooler climate. compaddict 10-14-2003, 12:47 PM Originally posted by Gyro Us New Englanders would FREAK if we saw one of those suckers crawling around. Eeks! RotaryStalker 10-14-2003, 12:53 PM I can't stand spiders... Here where I live we get all sorts of lovely (poisoness) ones. In the past few weeks I've killed several black widows, brown widows and even a grey widow plus one brown reclus. A bartender buddy of mine was bit in the back by a brown reclus. He's got a hole in his back now.. looks like someone shot him. Brown reclus is one nasty spider. RotaryStalker Red Devil 10-14-2003, 01:32 PM Widows are horrible, but Recluses you really have to watch out for. They are notorious for hiding in shoes and clothes on the floor. Neither are supposed to be deadly to full-grown adults, but for small children, they both can kill. Gyro 10-14-2003, 01:51 PM I'm all set with Florida. jtimbck2 10-14-2003, 03:03 PM We see a lot of black widows around our yard. I leave 'em alone unless they're somewhere likely to be dangerous. Is anyone being invaded by ladybugs this year? They're all over the front of our house, and they somehow manage to get in. They collect in the foyer inside the front door. Kap 10-14-2003, 03:05 PM I've got to quit browsing this forum while eating my lunch... Hayseed 10-14-2003, 03:32 PM I love ladybugs. Saw one on my RX-8 the other day and thought it was a good omen. Like daddy longlegs too. mikeb 10-14-2003, 08:28 PM you hate them , but made it your avatar Elara 10-14-2003, 08:48 PM Originally posted by jtimbck2 We see a lot of black widows around our yard. We just get spiders, but the cats tend to eat them before they're around long. Gyro 10-14-2003, 08:57 PM You have a spider eating cat? sweet. RX-GR8 10-14-2003, 10:38 PM check this one out. hey wait it looks like it has a rotor on it's back. spiders are cool. http://mywebpages.comcast.net/rsloan/versicolor.jpg Dugless 10-14-2003, 10:52 PM Goodyrx8, to address your original question before this turned into Wild Freakin Kingdom, it is a Golden Garden Spider, a pretty good sized one too but absolutely harmless! Dugless 10-14-2003, 10:55 PM This guy lives outside my kitchen window, what the hell is it? RX-GR8 10-14-2003, 10:57 PM your guardian angel? :D Gyro 10-14-2003, 10:58 PM I HATE spiders!! RX-GR8 10-14-2003, 11:00 PM cmon gyro. for the most part spiders are harmless. they are right up there with ants and bees as some of the most fascinating creatures we have on this earth! aside from humans of course. :) Dugless 10-14-2003, 11:02 PM Dude, how is this cool? How is this like a freakin ant??? Dugless 10-14-2003, 11:03 PM I mean this:D Gyro 10-14-2003, 11:03 PM  Gyro 10-14-2003, 11:05 PM Thats it. I'm buying a shotgun. RX-GR8 10-14-2003, 11:08 PM lol that spider is awesome. he needs to go back to web design class though. he's a little sloppy. i've seen better. Wankeler 10-14-2003, 11:15 PM whoa the flack! RX-GR8 10-14-2003, 11:52 PM is that the dreaded brown recluse? Dugless 10-15-2003, 12:21 AM RX-GR8, how do you get a picture in your signature? RX-GR8 10-15-2003, 12:33 AM click on user/cp next to the home button at the top. click on edit profile. in the sig box type in an html line like this "IMG http://mywebpages.com/yourpic.JPG /IMG" where mywebpages.com is the url where your pic resides. no quotes. put the IMG statements in [] brackets VividRacing.com 10-15-2003, 01:54 AM First, that's a great pic. Nice job! Second, it just looks plain icky. Here in AZ we got Turantulas and everyone's favorite...scorpions! QuantumTheory08 10-15-2003, 02:10 AM Here's a couple I've seen over the last year; let's start with Grenada - These spiders were about 4 1/2 across (the big ones; not this one). They were at the rum factory. QuantumTheory08 10-15-2003, 02:12 AM Pic2 This orb spider was just out while we were walking to a rock waterslide on the Island of Taveuni, Fiji. It was about 4 1/2 inches across - leg to leg. QuantumTheory08 10-15-2003, 02:15 AM Pic 3 Yeah this was my favorite; we're cleaning out the dental supply clinic in Fiji. We move this box of stuff and this 5 inch leg to leg spider is behing the supplies, behind a box. Oh yeah, he was a fast sucker too! Scared the heck out of me. I had my nephew catch it and got it out of the clinic. mikeb 10-15-2003, 02:20 AM this thread is out of control that spiderlooks like it has a egg on its head QuantumTheory08 10-15-2003, 02:21 AM Pic 4 I read the thread again and someone mentioned scorpions. This one was in Grenada. It was only about 2 1/2 inches long though. QuantumTheory08 10-15-2003, 02:23 AM No, no, no....that's it's abdomen (it's rear end). ....The egg on his head is his butt. ...butthead nevermind, the spider did get my attention though. mikeb 10-15-2003, 02:25 AM thats not very nice:o QuantumTheory08 10-15-2003, 02:31 AM Sorry, not to offend Mikeb. ...I can see how you might think that the spider was carrying an egg though. -jcs- RotaryStalker 10-15-2003, 11:06 AM yeah compaddict.. you might just have yourself a brown recluse there... http://ohioline.osu.edu/hyg-fact/2000/images/2061_2.jpg You can tell if it's a brown recluse by the violin marking on the 1st body piece and they have 3 pairs of eyes. RotaryStalker compaddict 10-15-2003, 11:23 AM It just might be.. Vince zoom44 10-15-2003, 12:02 PM does anyone know what kind of spider that guy had to eat on fear factor? that thing was weird. RotaryStalker 10-15-2003, 12:49 PM Some spiders can be very tasty.. here's one of my favorites.... ummmm http://www.afsc.noaa.gov/kodiak/images/photo/l_aeq.jpg compaddict.. I still can't tell if that one has the violin.. where was it found? RotaryStalker j1mb0x99 10-15-2003, 02:44 PM AHHHH.... ROTARY STALKER HAS CRABS!!!!!!!! Sorry, that was imature... but I had to do it. -JiM Greg 10-15-2003, 05:39 PM hows this for immature? I was range control at an m16 range one time and dangerous wildlife is part of the safety brief. We have 16 foxholes on the range and one day it just came to me-"firers beware of the brown recluse in the number two hole..." I had to take a break to laugh at myself and I thought it was hilarious but everyone else just stared blankly which is probably what you guys are doing too but come on think about it! funny huh? huh?... ok RX-GR8 07-13-2004, 10:02 AM buuuuuuuuuump MadRonin 07-13-2004, 10:25 AM Jebus this is an old thread. I hate spiders. Especially Brown Recluse. I was bitten by a Recluse when I was 14, on my arm. Damn thing swelled up and I got sick. Luckily it wasn't fully grown and I only had a mild reaction. It took me three weeks to recover and I still have the scar. Anyone who tells you that the Recluse is exclusive to the midwestern and western United States is wrong. A few years ago I met two men on the same day who had been bitten by Recluses. One was able to get medical attention before they had to amputate his leg. The other was a horse doctor who had been bitten cleaning out a stable. He was able to take care of the wound himself with hydrogen peroxide, antibiotics (literally horse pills) and a scalpel. Both men were bitten in PA by full grown spiders. My scar is about the diameter of a pencil. Their scars are about the diameter of a coffee mug. I don't care if they're beneficial. Generally I go out of my way not to harm another living creature, but spiders are strictly kill first, wash wall later. 93rdcurrent 07-13-2004, 01:26 PM I have a rather large (4" in diameter) Rose Hair tarantula. She is very cool. I started a thread a while back trying to balance all the pretty kitty photos that were being passed around with spiders. It only caught on for a little while. Anyway we call those big brown spiders Orb spiders up here. They don't get as big around here as they do in your parts. My wife is scared to death of spiders but I don't worry about them so much. RX-GR8 07-13-2004, 01:29 PM post a pic. 93rdcurrent 07-13-2004, 01:38 PM I will try I need a digital camera. She is big though. in the meantime here's what she looks like. GooOnYou 07-13-2004, 01:47 PM That spider up there isn't a brown recluse, brown recluses are smaller i think but they definately have a mark that looks like a bow and arrow or a violin on their backs which i don't see. I had to kill one last week. But anyway check out this camel spider they have over in the middle east. It bites you during the night and injects novacaine so you can't feel it while it eats away at your arms/legs. http://www.snopes.com/photos/bugs/camelspider.asp MadRonin 07-13-2004, 02:22 PM That spider up there isn't a brown recluse, brown recluses are smaller i think but they definately have a mark that looks like a bow and arrow or a violin on their backs which i don't see. Those things, while real, are not actually spiders, nor do they eat or poison people or camels. The whole purpose of Snopes.com is to debunk crap like your statement above. Now if you were kidding, then you shoulda put a smiley or something to indicate as much. Outlaws eXtreme 07-13-2004, 02:48 PM The ones on Fear Factor was the African Cave Dwelling Spiders... nasty looking things. I use to collect a bunch of spiders in my back yard... from simple daddy long legs, to black widows, found some jumping spiders, and had huge family of garden spiders. Later on I got myself a mini brown tarantula, and a brazillion web-shooting spider.
