Anyone ever heard of this (http://www.davisnet.com/home_flash.asp)? A quote from the carchip web page:

"Award-winning CarChip consists of a tiny “black box” data logger, a CD with software for analyzing the data, and a cable and power adapter for downloading. The data logger plugs into the OBDII connector in your car, where it continuously collects and stores data from the car’s computer control systems. 75 hours of trip details, including time and date, distance, speed, idle time, hard accelerations and decelerations, and engine diagnostic trouble codes."

Does it work, what's it good for? I'm not a tuner or hot rodder or anything, but I do have a teen about to drive. Any thoughts?

Ha; cute car. I don't think my kid would appreciate the Panda, however. Also, in my original question I didn't mean to imply he's getting the '8 cuz he's not. I subscribe to the belief that the '8 is too good for a new driver. He might get an RSX (base model, not S-type.) And that's only if his grades are good, which right now could use some improvement. But with a car like that it might be nice to have some monitoring capability to make sure he's "safe and sane."

All i wanted to add was that when I was a new driver I flipped a ford taures SHO doing about 94 mph, just think if I was in something capable of going faster on a short distance, i probably wouldn't be living let alone typing, just tell him to respect what a car CAN and CANNOT do, lol.

Just my .02

Check out the Tech forum for more info on diagnostics readers. The Carchip does not currently support the CAN protocol used in the RX-8, but they are working on it.

I haven't used it but it seems like a cool device to have if you had a run-of-the-mill OBDII ride, but it needs CAN support for the next wave of vehicles.

Thanks, blizz. I was starting to wonder if anyone was actually going to answer my question.
