I wonder if someone can explain exactly how the "View New Posts" feature decides what counts as a "new post." Sometime when I refresh I'll get in excess of 200 "new" posts, other times as few as 1.

The cutoff time automatically resets if you are inactive on the forum for 15 minutes, but you can manually reset it to "now" by clicking on the "Mark all forums read" link at the bottom of the forums list.
