Second siting was a white series 1 in the PetsMart/Borders parking lot off of Hoover at 530pm. And the third was in the WalMart lot off of 119 near Countyline Road. Fr430n 01-31-2012, 10:27 PM satin black 2004 in colorado springs. if you see it, don't be shy! jim.tonneson 02-05-2012, 06:33 PM Hi, all, I'm new to posting --just joined but frequent lurker. Love the vehicle, will probably buy before year end. Don't know if you'd want me to join a meet (I'm in Denver) but I'd love to check out what you think of your 8s. BTW, now that it has snowed, anybody gone out? How is the car in snow? I'm spoiled by 4wd, but wonder if the 8 does ok in winter driving. Do you feel the need to buy snow tires? Thanks... I live in Silverthorne, it's up in the Mtn by Keystone. I drive mine in the snow, but do have winter tires, bought some Dunlop 3D wintersports and have couple of sandbags in the trunk. I drive the Vail pass and such, but it does have hard time when it's in the deep snow and we all know how the 8 lacks in the torque department. But I still love it in the snow and the dry!! xexok 02-06-2012, 12:23 PM You might consider removing those sandbags and just going with skinnier tires. Also you just replied to a post from 03, don't think you will get a response there. :P The only extra weight in the car that is needed for snow is the driver. Adding 50lbs of weight to a 3,000lb car is a 1.6% increase in weight. People who do this are ACTUALLY attempting to increase the pounds per square inch of the tire to the snow. Greater pressure means greater traction. Going from a 225 width tire to a 205 width tire is a 8.88% decrease in surface area of the tire to the snow, and with the same weight spread over the reduced contact patch, a roughly 12.1% increase in the pressure of the tire to the snow. And that's just some napkin math to the common 17x7 205/50r17 winter package people go with without factoring in the added benefit of narrower tires cutting through the snow better. So, if you want to add weight to get the same increase of effectiveness as going to that tire package (without going to the tire package), add 363lbs of weight to the car. 2 burly guys should be about right. Bladecutter 02-08-2012, 03:15 PM Actually, the fact that the RX-8 lacks in the torque department only helps when driving in snow, as the tires don't have to work as hard gripping the ground when there's only 100 to 159 foot lbs of torque being applied, in comparison to a Mustang with 280 ft-lbs in the V-6, all the way up to 510 ft-lbs in their supercharged monster car. BC. jim.tonneson 02-11-2012, 05:27 PM That may be, but when you're in about 8-12" of snow and trying to move, it's better to have the torque and power out than without! The track was nearly empty. I think I ran for 30-45 by myself at one point. Went through 2 tanks of gas, a tire, and 40oz of oil but I greatly imprived my line maintaining sufficient speed to require at least 3 gear except for turns 6 and 8. I ended up doing a total of 147 track miles. Had a 2009 Lamborghini Gallardo show up too, but he kept leaving the track when Id come on. DeViLbOi 04-09-2012, 07:50 AM I have an Accessport but you must marry it to the car that is tuned so it can't tune two cars at once. Someone has to be getting the itch around here to install some new parts... How about a track day? DeViLbOi 04-12-2012, 06:31 AM Don't fit in the 8 w/ a Helmet :( 8ya 04-12-2012, 09:22 AM I think we would get more people together if it wasn't at the track. My first idea was to have a Bbq or something.I've been wanting to drive up the pass tward woodland park or maybe cripple creek and play some poker? I hosted the phantomcanyon brewery meet last time. I could do that next month. Hydr0nium 04-12-2012, 07:08 PM I'd love to get a meet going. Bladecutter 04-12-2012, 09:33 PM I think we would get more people together if it wasn't at the track. Rumors lies, and falicies. How dare you say something so untrue. You should be beaten with a box of dried spaghetti. :P We could have a BBQ at the track for those who don't want to drive their precious cars, and risk having fun. They can make us burgers while we work up an appetite. BC. Saterday night im drinking downtown springs getting a night without the wife and kid if anyone wants to get a beer let me know. Iluvrevs 04-13-2012, 10:20 AM Yeah, why not at the track? We could do the BBQ and those of us (BC and I) that want to drive can run around the track and give rides to those interested. Bladecutter 04-13-2012, 03:40 PM Yeah, my car is a Sport, so no headroom robbing sunroof in it, so just about anyone can git in it with a helmet on, unless you're like 6'7" tall, with a super long torso. BC. DeViLbOi 04-13-2012, 05:38 PM I fit just fine with a helmet...just can't shift to 3rd. :P I'm all for going to the track and hanging out for a BBQ and takin pictures though. Just has to be on a weekend I'm not working. One of the guys here at the office said he would shoot me the cone killing schedule...but I still don't have that. :( Bladecutter 04-13-2012, 06:06 PM There's isn't going to be an open lapping day on a Saturday or Sunday again until October. The last one is TOMORROW. BC. Hydr0nium 04-13-2012, 09:56 PM I would suggest everyone get involved with the RMSolo. I am going to be starting my first season this year. Would be great to have some more 8 out there. Currently, I think I will be the only one that has one. 8ya 04-14-2012, 07:47 AM The rx7 guys get together every other friday or sat at the chaple hills mall parking lot. Im sure thoes guys would be down to party jim.tonneson 04-15-2012, 10:05 AM @8ya, I'm in Silverthorne and don't get to Denver too often or know the area other than the West end around Lakewood and Co Mill Mall. But I'd be down to getting to know and see some other 8's!! spowerrx 04-15-2012, 11:35 AM hey guys, new here but thinking about getting an rx8. its yellow completely stock 04 with 55,xxx miles. i was wondering if you guys have any advise about what i should do or make sure to look at or check out before buying. it is coming from a dealer. anyways i live in denver and if i do get it look forward to being around here more often. thanks. 8ya 04-15-2012, 03:36 PM go for an 06 or newer. that 04 is about to loose its warentee, but if you do go for any rx8 Get a compression test and a vacuum test.. make sure they have great maitenance records and pay extra for the best warentee the dealer offers.. and read all the stickies on this site. Good luck DeViLbOi 04-16-2012, 02:20 PM I would also take a look and see if there have been any aftermarket mods done to the car that you can see. Not that anyone here has any mods or anything *cough* but in my experience in Cleveland a number of the cars that had aftermarket mods didn't hold up very long. Specific mods I would watch out for most would be the "cool ass Cold Air Intake" and K&N stickers. If proper maintenance was done you will find a hose the goes from the front of the oil cap and down toward the passenger side, if not it will go to the driver side. If it goes to the driver side verify that there is no oil in the upper intake manfold, just unscrew the according tube and swipe your finger on the inside. Lastly...if the car is a manual...take a look at where the clutch pedal attaches to the firewall. There is a known issue with the clutch pedal snapping off where you can see the cracks forming. If you see three spot welds for the clutch pedal I wouldn't buy it until they replaced the pedal with a repaired one. Best of luck! Iluvrevs 04-17-2012, 10:45 AM The track days being on a Friday probably puts a lot of people out for a meet there. Im open to a meet south of hear, but maybe not all the way to the Springs this go around. Time is a little short at the moment with track season being upon us. DeViLbOi 04-17-2012, 04:07 PM I'm down for headin North for a meet...I dun mind. I just figured that everyone went through the same cycle that we did in Cleveland where every March/April everyone put on their cool new parts that they acquired and drooled over all winter. With things being so mild...I guess not. Bladecutter 04-17-2012, 08:50 PM Well, I think money has been a little tight for some people lately, and they probably don't have a huge pile of parts sitting on their lawn waiting to be installed. What we could do, if there was any interest, is have a day where people can bring their cars, say, to my house, that want to have simple maintenance done. Plugs, wires, coils, brakes, diff and trans fluid changes, oil change, etc. As Iluvrevs can tell you, I know my way around a car, and have a decent enough garage to get a couple cars in and out in a short enough period of time. Heck, I would even be willing to hold a once a month "How to work on your car" training class. I just showed iluvrevs how to change his brake pads, front and rear. I showed slvrmzdrx8 last year how to change ignition coils. We could probably do something once a month, if there was someone who needed parts installed. Its that, or we take apart a good car, and put it back together. BC. The 8 for me definitely feels more at home being pushed hard than my other cars which included BMWs, Audis, an EVO VIII, Z28, and a couple of Nissans. Its certainly not what I’d call a fast car, but get it into the turns and it excels. BC and I go to HPR http://highplainsraceway.com/. But, no weekend track days until October. I will usually just take off a Friday once or 2x a month but not everyone has that option. Hydr0nium 04-23-2012, 06:57 PM http://www.rmsolo.org/ I am registered for my first event this Sunday. DeViLbOi 04-24-2012, 05:25 PM In Cleveland I used to go to AutoX events and take photos for the event and have free reign of where I was both on and off course, with a spotter. On the site it doesn't identify the "spectator" area. Is this area in a decent enough location for it to be worth my drive down to take photos? And if I were able to make it down would someone be able to spot for me, as my spotter is in Cleveland on business? Photos can be found here if anyone is interested... http://devilboi.crackmonkey.us/bevy/ Hydr0nium 04-24-2012, 09:14 PM I can't answer any of those questions definitively, but I would say that something could be worked out if you were to come. Hi Flying 8 04-30-2012, 11:55 AM It was great to meet you and to see you out there. I would recommend looking into the autocross school as it give you a ton of seat time as will the driver's school at HPR. Let me know when you will be out again and I'll help out however I can. By the way, the run you rode with me was good enough for 3rd in 'X' class if it had counted, so you picked a good one. Mark Greek Racer 8 05-04-2012, 10:50 AM Hi Flying? Was it you and your father I met at a winter Autox last year? (Mark and Mark?) I spent last weekend at the the Pirelle World Challenge with Don Walker who has 2 Rx-8s. I had a great time out there helping out and watching. I have an itch to go do some AutoX again and even some open track days at PPIR and HPR. Hey, That was me. I was driving home from Chipotle on Logan. If you are on here join up at CMZC.net. We have monthly meets and in the summer we usually do a few cruises. I have the Blue 8 you saw (TC) and another grey 8. I love the yellow 8s. They are rare. Wish I could find one cheap. I'd snatch it up. Hi Flying 8 05-04-2012, 11:49 AM Yea, we met last year, but I am the father. My son is driving a X Prepared 3rd gen RX-7 that he is fine tuning at this point. He had the fastest raw time on Sunday, but he coned on all runs. He is trying to learn some new Avon slicks that are very fast, but are very different than Hoosiers. My car is not running well right now, since I put the BHR coils in. I am going to pull them out and send them back to Charles to check them out. Power is just down overall. Hope to see you out again sometime soon. Mark Sr. DeViLbOi 05-04-2012, 05:05 PM Hi Flying 8 - Do you have an AP tune? Something about Dwell settings being waay off causing power loss. No, I have to run everything else as stock to stay in the stock class. Supposedly, you don't have to change the dwell on completely stock cars, (which of course you can't do anyway), from what I have read. DeViLbOi 05-08-2012, 09:14 AM Ah...sorry...I assumed that the BHR coils pushed you out of stock. And yes...dwell must be changed for FI...but I have seen NA cars have problems without the dwell being changed from Jeff's old default. slvrstreak 05-08-2012, 09:19 AM thats not a problem anymore with the new BHR coils that was only the old coils they were using Hi Flying 8 05-08-2012, 09:19 AM Ah...sorry...I assumed that the BHR coils pushed you out of stock. And yes...dwell must be changed for FI...but I have seen NA cars have problems without the dwell being changed from Jeff's old default. No, last year they tried to disqualify the BHR coils, but I wrote to the SEB over the off season, and they approved any coils that mount in the stock location. I am going to pull them off and send them to Charles to have him look at them and he said he would evaluate them. I appreciate all your input. Mark DeViLbOi 05-08-2012, 09:34 AM slvrstreak - Ah...shows you what a little time away from the forum will do ya. Mark - yea...I'm sure you weren't the first to take issue with that ruling. Some of those rules for stock are rough. I understand stock is stock...but to bump people up to an uncompetitive class over some of the items is just silly. slvrstreak 05-08-2012, 09:37 AM they just started using the new coils after May 2011 so any kits after then will have the new coils :) Hi Flying 8 05-08-2012, 12:02 PM Of course I purchased these and they were shipped in May or June,2011 and then the SEB sent out a tech bulletin that may the coils illegal right before Nationals, which ticked of a lot of people and I'm sure, as you said mobilized a lot of people. After I installed my coils, the car started slower, idled just as rough as before, felt down on power and got lower mileage. I ran a complete grounding kit to ensure that they were properly grounded also. It could be that some of these new coils are not up to the level of the old ones, but they weren't performing as well as my 40,000 mile stock coils. We'll see what Charles comes up with after I pull them out. Hydr0nium 05-08-2012, 06:36 PM Looks like I am not going to be at the autox this weekend, some things came up that I have to take care of. Not so annoying in the winter months with the windows up...but super annoying now. No experience but my new EBC's are the same way as were my OEM after my first track day. It doesnt bother me but for giggles Ive greased their backs, between them and the shims, between the shims and the caliper, and between the pad and the caliper and it doesnt last long. Im using CRC synthetic and its running out it looks like. Bladecutter 05-16-2012, 09:50 AM The Yellowstuff pads, with those fiber backing pads that I had to cut to shape are actually working really well at keeping everything nice and quiet, surprisingly enough. DeViLbOi 05-16-2012, 11:58 AM yea...I don't know if the chatter is coming from the rotor/pad friction or from the back of the pad. Bladecutter 05-16-2012, 04:43 PM Did you use new rotors, have the old ones cut, or just slapped them on the unprepped old rotors? BC. DeViLbOi 05-17-2012, 05:12 PM Anyone plan on going on Sat. other than Mark? Was thinking of showing up to take some picts since I'm off but right now it looks like I'll be shooting two cars. :( Hydr0nium 05-19-2012, 09:15 PM Well, HPR was very successful. Driving in the extreme rain is rather interesting, especially for your first lap on your first day on a track. Got in about 30 laps total, definitely have some areas to work on, but got a lot of good feedback from the instructor. Pics/video snippets coming soon. Only regret was not getting any times at all. Since it is a "driving school," they don't record lap times, and actually might revoke your invitation to the track if you have someone reporting times from the side. I don't even think I can ballpark it, perhaps I can once I review the video. Iluvrevs 05-20-2012, 02:08 PM Very cool and the rain experience would be great with instruction. I think their insurance specifies they cant permit timing during non sanctioned events. I only got in about 2 sessions on Friday before my fronts were finished, which I expected. Had an AWESOME spin off coming out of turn 1 trying to avoid a timid Viper GTS driver that filled the car with dirt. Its cleaned out now and no damage. Maybe now between you, me and BC we can get some 8s out there for a day. DeViLbOi 05-21-2012, 09:37 AM Yes...their insurance...along with yours...would become void if you were given a time. That said...if you provided your own time via GPS monitors in the car or via someone at the start/finish line...you would be fine. Dunno why they would have a problem with them being recorded on the side. Knowing what you did on the lap and the associated time would help you understand what worked and didn't. Just depends on their definition of "driving school" I guess. Hydr0nium 05-21-2012, 05:49 PM Yes...their insurance...along with yours...would become void if you were given a time. Dunno why they would have a problem with them being recorded on the side. Knowing what you did on the lap and the associated time would help you understand what worked and didn't. Just depends on their definition of "driving school" I guess. Their explanation/reasoning is that this is a driving school, not a racing school. Therefore, any thing related to "timing" is considered racing to them, which isn't the purpose of the instructions. To me, timing is a metric for showing improvement. Being able to quantify what you are doing helps alot more than your instructor saying "you're doing better." What kind of times are you guys putting up, so I might have something to compare to next time? Also, my computer went the way of the dodo after a power outage while I was at the track yesterday, so video/pics will come at a later date. Hydr0nium 05-23-2012, 08:47 PM Getting to the track and seeing this is rather depressing/intimidating. It rained probably for 2 hours, first session continued as scheduled, right through the weather! http://i1072.photobucket.com/albums/w376/hydr0nium/DSC00115.jpg?t=1337824605 Me leaving the hot pits in my 3rd of 4 sessions. The only decent photo--I need to teach my brother how to take better pictures. He was working corner 1. http://i1072.photobucket.com/albums/w376/hydr0nium/DSC00117.jpg?t=1337824581 My entrance to turn one. http://i1072.photobucket.com/albums/w376/hydr0nium/DSC00121.jpg?t=1337824558 Me going through turn one. http://i1072.photobucket.com/albums/w376/hydr0nium/DSC00122.jpg?t=1337824528 I worked the next day while my brother drove. Much better weather! Got only a few pictures. One of the instructors brought his GTR. REALLY wish I got a ride in it, but the line was huge. So I just got to watch it from corners 3 and 5. http://i1072.photobucket.com/albums/w376/hydr0nium/DSC00144.jpg?t=1337824399 My brother in his 135i coming through turn 3. http://i1072.photobucket.com/albums/w376/hydr0nium/DSC00134.jpg?t=1337824462 My brother with some traffic. http://i1072.photobucket.com/albums/w376/hydr0nium/DSC00136.jpg?t=1337824431 My brother at turn 5. http://i1072.photobucket.com/albums/w376/hydr0nium/DSC00157.jpg?t=1337824636 Videos uploading to youtube now. But they are mostly of the racing school, and I haven't got the ones my brother took of me yet. Ive not timed myself beyond within the minute. Im under 3, thats about as close as Ive gotten. When I was there the first weekend of March a noob in a 350Z asked about renting a transponder which they offer, but he was told they couldnt provide this for lapping days because of insurance blah blah like DeViLbOi said. Though I wasnt aware my insurance covered me for lapping days, ie non competition events. I will have to verify this with mine as Im looking at getting track insurance too. |
