Since your from Cali, you will fell the power loss that you get at this high an altitude with a naturally asspirated car. It pulls great up here. I've been a few times through the mountains. The farthest Driven would be from Denver to New Castle .just drop it down a gear on the steep inclines and your cruising passed every 4 and 6 cyl. on the highway. Turbo it and you won't have and problem. My bros GN and Diesel just fly up those hills with no problem. If you have run your car down the quarter expect a 1.5-2 sec drop in time. My runs up here have been no better than 15.9 and I only got that once. Mostly I get 16.3 16.4. That's before my car got a new motor this past August. Wouldn't hold compression and now it's idleing rough. Gotta call the dealer on monday. My worst runs have been 17.9, bad take off and the car would not go ito second for nothing.

Damn!

I was thinking about getting a turbo'd subaru or audi before i move out there. Ill be in the mountains alot and when i drove my uncles audi allroad with the turbo, it had great pick up with the turbo. I think if you live in the mountains, you definetly need a turbo in your car. That way you have an equal stream of air going into each cylinder or what not. And you dont have to worry about the thin air and compression :)

This is my first post! Normally i just read and get everyone's opinion on products, but your question about mountain driving made me speak up. Everything Crazy said about your car running slower at elevation is true. Coming from Cali you will feel like the car is slower, sorry but there is nothing you can do about that. However, I have a group of friends with a wide arrange of cars and here are some of the comments that they had to say about my 8.

Situation, rx8 vs. highly modded STi
Going uphill sucked don't want to talk about it. Going downhill different story altogether.
My friend had a hard time keeping up when it came to the corners. The only thing that kept him close was his power from the bigger turbo. He was right behind me as we started, but once we got to any turn, he had to hit the brakes hard. All I had to do was hold on tight and let the car speak for itself.

Situation rx8 vs. Crossfire
After changing the oil and washing both the cars, we went out for a drive. Hit the first turn, enough said. A couple of days later all my friend could say, was I wasn’t allowed to lead on anymore mountain drives. He said that once we hit the second turn, and everyone after that, we would enter into the turn and the 8 would just sit down and keep on accelerate where he had to slow down just to keep his line.

Situation rx8, rsx, audi a4 1.8T, mazdaspeed6, crossfire, AE86
My friends and I went on an aggressive mountain drive, and everyone of them said that they wouldn’t go unless I was in the back.

Every car and driver have their moment to shine. In a straight line I loose. It is my personal opinion, the 8 was built solely for the purposes of mountain driving. Nothing else can compare to the handling. As for snow, I have a fullsize blazer for that. Plus, they say this years winter will be rather mild.

Hope this helps some.

^ I complete agree. The most fun your going to have in the 8 is in the mountains. I drove one of my buddies evos threw a few turns and it really didn't compare. (at the time he was hitting 13.5s on the quarter now he's hitting 12.7s) He has the power to pass you but not on the turns. Sea level the eight is an alright dragster but taking the turns hard and fast is alot more fun. But I still love to drag at Bandimere. Be careful going down hills you'll be going 55 and in a split second you could be nearing 10

What year is your car. Have you got a replacement engine yet?

wow you have more miles than me. I have an 04. Needed a new motor this past August at 24,000 miles. I think I have like 25,500 now 1,500 on the new motor and it has high idle. I also have an ACT prolite flywheel but not installed yet. My bros house burnt down so now I have no access to a lift and tools. ACT clutch was put in when the new motor went in. Be carful the dealers try to blame bad engines on the after market intake. Atually they try to blame everything on it. And AM exhaust.

Where do you go for your work. I have been working with Burt Mazda over on Arapahoe and 25 for my warranty work. The service manager’s name is Ed. I took my rx in after i replaced my gear oil and 2nd and 5th started to grind. After it was all said and done i got a new transmission sent and put in under warranty. During the initial conversation with ed, i mentioned that since he had the transmission out anyway, he could swap out my flywheel with an aftermarket one. I needed to replace my clutch as well, so I asked and he said that he would install what ever clutch I wanted. He can’t warranty the clutch anyway, even if it was from Mazda. The total cost to me was for the one hour of additional shop time for the tech to swap out flywheels.

the mountains... ooohhh I love the mountains in this 8. buffalo has it right, the 8 is totally made for the corners... it's not going to be beaten if it has a decent driver behind the wheel that can do more than go in a straight line. :)

it's not the greatest car, no, but it's definitely under-rated.

They have been pretty good so far. My 8 is an 04 AT and has 10 K on it. Had a CEL, and car was dead once so they replaced the plugs, new battery and a stronger starter. Works fine so far after those changes. I just get my oil changes there. I leave it in the garage for the winter because I don't like the front getting sand blasted from the road sand during and after snows and then the chips in the windshield so it sits mostly until the streets are cleaned. It has the summer tires on it so its useless in snow anyway. I thought about snow tires but that's all I have done it think about it. Still a good car I think.

If nothing more, keep an eye on the meets and stop by. We are averaging a couple of different meets per month. If we could get another 8 meet together, that would be great.

Sadly not yet no. I will one day though. There is a guy in the springs we did the greddy install with. UPP down in the Springs will tune rotaries that's who tuned his with the AP. Or you can try SR-tunning. I know that Steve kahn is supposed to be here sometie in August and and the spring next year doing some tunning. Last time he was here he was at Import Sports. They are in Denver and may Tune rotaries. Don't know. http://importsports.net/home.htm

I am checking on buying snow tires for my 04 RX auto with 18 '' wheels. I keep seeing that Blizzaks are one way to go. What about the wheel sensors? Do they come off or will they stay on when the new snows are mounted on the wheels?

Thanks again. This is my first time to put snows on the RX and I hear lots of folks say the car is good in the snow with good snow tires or all seasons.

Tayninh

I hear if you keep the summer soft tires the RX is basically useless in any sort of snow accumulation. I think one of us CO guys used snows and it was the best. I am not sure to go either snows or all seasons for the littleton area. I drive to around the Denver Tech center C470 route each day. I have never had the RX out in snow until this year. I only have about 11,000 on it with the original soft summer tires OEM stuff on it. I have the touring 18 inch wheels. This winter I don't have a choice so the car needs to be equipped with snows or All Season. Not sure which yet.

JRichter
08-19-2008, 10:50 AM
I was able to get around fine (on a daily basis) the last two winters with all-seasons (Khumo ASX's) in the Colorado Springs area. Ground clearance/ice on up slopes were the biggest issues but most of the major roads are plowed here regularly and if you pick the right roads you can manage.

Tayninh
08-19-2008, 11:16 AM
Ok, so now I need to make a decision. I have 11K on the summer tires but they seem to be ok so far although I believe their life ends at 20K. If I get Firestone snows then that means when the snows are gone, I have t o switch back to the summer tires which are noisy. Or go to all season tires and have four used summer tires to keep around but for what I don't know. They would most likely go another 5 k perhaps. Did you use the Rack to get your tires or did you use the local discount tire stores?

JRichter
08-19-2008, 05:19 PM
I used Discount Tire back when I got mine out of convenience as I was moving at the time. Having moved from Texas a couple of years ago, I have no experience w/ snow tires and was worried about driving around w/ them throughout the season when the roads were dry and I was driving my car hard. This might not be a problem with modern snow tires but I'm not sure and haven't looked into it. I also didn't want to come up w/ an extra set of wheels and didn't want to have to swap the different tires to the wheels I had. I figured all-seasons would be the best compromise and managed pretty good on those. I don't think I ever strayed from my area or Denver area throughout both the winters I've lived here except for a vacation trip during December so not sure how the car would manage in the mountains or heavier snow areas.

I also found the OEM summer tires that came w/ my car (Bridgestone Potenza's) were not even useful in hot central Texas when the streets were wet, slick, or greasy at all for the most part and I wore them out at around 10k miles (gravel roads probably helped do them in) so that and knowing I was moving to CO is what convinced me to get the all-seasons. I couldn't imagine how the car would get around up here w/ those still on (especially w/ me at the wheel :) ).

Also, if you would be putting the snow tires on the stock 18" wheels, then you should be able to keep the tire pressure monitoring system in tack or some of the aftermarket wheels accept the TPMS sensors also.

huzer21
08-19-2008, 05:41 PM
I've got summer tires on my RX8. Last year was my first winter with the car, and I might have left it parked 4 or 5 times. Even then, the main reason is that my work parking lot is a steep decline, and I was worried about if being unplowed and sliding into the metal gate.

I will say that even after driving RWD cars growing up in northern NY, the RX8 can be a little interesting to drive during the winter months. I've toyed with the idea of dedicated winter tires on separate wheels, but for the cost, I'd rather just get a beater.

As far as where to get tires, Discount Tire matches prices (I bought my Kumho Ecstas for my Mazda6 there). Be sure to check the prices on Discount Tire Direct as well, and have the local store match those. I've seen good deals there, as well.

08-19-2008, 05:44 PM
Yeah I guess I'm lucky with the OEM tires so far. I took the car to Wisconsin a year ago and that's the last time I take it with the touring sports suspension. It was a bit bumpy and noisy as all get out. When I put the numbers on paper I see its better to go all season otherwise I am stuck with buying two sets of tires in one year which makes it a bit expensive for 18 inch wheels low profile. I'll just need to look around for the best all around all season tires. Not sure Firestone is it just yet. Snows are soft rubber much like the summer OEM tires and so if you leave them on during the summer, you'll wear them out real fast. I see some buy two sets of wheels, new sensors so to have tires for both seasons. That's more than what I want to put out so I guess I'll go All season then. I keep seeing this car is excellent in the snow with good tires so I guess I'll find out this winter then. Seems the Springs area gets a good amount of snow than up here in Littleton area.

Ok I just received a quote from Firestone for All Season tires on the RX auto 18" wheels. Bridgestone UNI-T AQ II Potenza RD 960AS pole Pos 225/45R18 40K mile limited warranty. Mount tires, balance, road hazard protection, new stems tire disposal. Bottom line is $1,001.03 The tires are $191.49 each and that's their discount! ouch. What does anyone think? I have not tried discount tire yet or anyone else.

Tayninh

Oh this is interesting. I received the same quote from Discount Tire only they threw me a curve. They said they will overhaul the wheel tire pressure sensors for $24. I called Burt Maza Service department and the guy started laughing. No, the dealer does not overhaul those senors when they change to new tires. So what is Discount Tire pulling? Of course he said he would match the price to Firestone anyday. Well he asked if the car had wheel senors while Firestone did not which is no big deal at this point anyway. Firestone quoted a price for new rubble valve stems!! Which I knew wasn't correct anyway. Guess I'll look for $20 dollar discount coupon and see where I can go next to get the tires. I think I will not give up my summer tires for free to anyone so I might just find a buyer for them cheap. I still come out ahead somewhat I guess but still that's a lot of money for all season tires. Goes with this type of car I assume.

$1000 is steep.

Try looking into other brands, like Falken (Ziex 912s) and Sumitomo (HTRZ-III). And look into 235/40R-18 sizes.

Just have them mount the tires. Avoid the TPMS drama. Shouldn't be more than $48.

Tayninh
09-10-2008, 02:58 PM
I agree its steep but Consumers Reports rates this tire over many others for it ice and snow traction as an All Season tire. So it has some good qualities to it. Of course the best fix would be to buy 17" RX wheels and new Blizzacks but that's also very expensive. I have headaches thinking about the price but I figured it would be expensive because of the low profile 18" wheels. I have the GT auto. I see the 08 version is a 6 speed auto with more HP.

Just to give you a heads up, we're having a dyno day at SR Tuning in Colorado Springs on Oct 25th. It would be cool if you could make there. Even if you don't plan on hitting the dyno, there will be quite a few people there hanging out as well. $25 baselines.

Well Colorado RX drivers. I learned a good lesson yesterday in the snow. Nope. the RX is no good at all in the snow. I have brand new All Season Potenza Pole Position 18" wheels on it and the wide tires is no match to driving in the snow. Its just plowing and too much resistence and thus little to no traction. It did work out well with the icy streets this morning. So when it snows again I am without a car. Period. Not too happy about a car with advanced traction whatever system and antilock brakes that behaves like a whimp in the snow even when taking it slow. Parking in just a few inches of snow is another nightmare waiting to happen. It would not pull out into the street but went side ways. So I had to back it up on a cleared pavement to get a better head start into the street. I barely made it home. Would not go up a slight inclined driveway either with less than an inch of snow. I had to shovel my driveway down to the concrete and only then did the car make it back into the garage. Wasn't a happy experience at all but I learned a few lessons the hard way. I guess that's my hard headedness. I've seen other comments that this car is good in the snow but from my experience and from others as well this is not the car to take out on snowy streets regardless of how deep it is.

Hmmm... I generally don't have major problems at all with mine in the snow and I'm still running Khumo ASX 245/40/18's all-seasons. Sure I can't drive it like normal but babying it w/ the conditions in mind, it does rather well for a light RWD car. I usually get way more oversteer than understeer (plowing). The DSC/TCS does a decent job but at low speed around the town driving, I find it may perform a little better when just pushing the DSC button once, freeing up a little more control (allowing the back to swing around a little more reducing understeer) but still giving you somewhat of a fail safe. Ice is my biggest issue but on snow (loose, packed, fresh or whatever) it actually has decent traction and if stops/takeoffs on uphills are avoided, it's easily manageable. The scariest incidents I've encountered were being on the slightly glazed over/black iced I25 at anything north of 50 mph when the back would start to step out with perhaps the tiniest fraction of a throttle surge but the DSC light would flash and few times and the back would come back into line. Not sure about an auto but a harsh, premature down shift w/ the MT can send you into a spin on ice w/ a quickness. So you have pretty decent traction on the ice? My tires seem much better in the snow and not so good on the ice.

12-01-2008, 06:17 PM
Interesting. Yeah it behaved rather well with the ice this morning but that was without any snow pack. The roads were mainly wet and ice patches. With the slightest amount of snow it seems to fish a bit but then it gets back in line. This is not hitting it hard at all but just a slow start off. Course yesterday was the worst conditions for just about any vehicle. Heavy wet slushy snow. The wide tires made it more like a plow so I guess it makes sense then that the tires will spin on any loads and upgrades would be even worst. Once you get snow hitting the bottom which really isn't all that deep its going to spin out or just stop. I can remember even my old 4WD Toy truck would have a hard time of it in the sort of snow we had yesterday. After the difficulty I don't think I want to try any other snow. Dry stuff might be a different story but I don't want to be caught going to work and causing a traffic jam because the car will not move. I have a few inclines going to work and places that I remember were difficult for any sports car. Not sure tire spikes will improve it any but it might some but they make a lot of noise I think. The heavy wet snow is a test for most any vehicle. I might go for a used Honda CRV once the RX is paid off but I'm keeping the rx.

I drove my all last winter as well and had no issues as long as I babied the throttle. If you step on it in the snow and esspecially ice your back end will slip out from behind you...not good:Eyecrazy: . Oh and don't try and go up any steep hills from a dead stop, you will not make it!

I got stuck in Golden on Saturday night.. tried to leave, got stuck on the road to E470, couldn't make it up the ramp to E470, made a U-Turn, got half way back to parking lot and couldn't make it up hill without going sideways.. finally got into the parking lot and got stuck. Had to have my buddies push me into a parking spot.

Yea, looks like I'll be driving my beater a lot this winter. I really wish I had a 4WD car for CO snow.. I don't like how ugly my 8 looks now either.. lots of winter road grime on it.. but it doesn't make sense to wash it every other day it's not snowing..

huzer21
12-03-2008, 12:07 PM
On the days last year that I couldn't/didn't drive the 8, there was about the same amount of snow that would've had me parking my old 6i as well. Depending on your comfort level with winter driving, and gentle pressure of the right foot, the 8 CAN make it with light snow. A rally car it ain't. I'm lucky enough to live fairly close to work, or at least close enough to light rail if I have to go that route. On the really bad days, I'll just work from home.

Is the 8 an ideal winter ride? No, but in the metro Denver area, it'll get you through a solid 90% of the time when the roads are dry or lightly packed. Other parts that see more significant snow, I'd make sure to have a different vehicle.

Tayninh
12-04-2008, 02:32 PM
Take today for example. I took our Honda Accord with All Seasons on it. Yes there were shots that is started slipping and you sure needed more distance from the car in front of you because all that traffic made the roads a packed down ice mess on C-470. I might have made it to work with the RX but not sure so I chose what I thought was the safest to drive. With the heavy wet stuff we had last weekend I would say any vehicle and even 4WD would have some difficulty. The RX was no match to that stuff. So when it snows above 5 inches or so and with any amount of wet snow its best just to park that baby. I wonder what tire spikes would do? Then I would not want that clacky noise with the tires when the roads are dry so its best to stick with what you have which is either All Seasons or Snow tires. Of course is you keep the OEM summer dry racing tires on, its a sure thing the car should stay off every street. Such is the nature of CO snows. One day we have snow, then we get 68 degrees and then another cold front comes in and more snow driving. I think tomorrow (Friday) the temps should warm up.

anyone know if Omicron still around on here? I would like to see his views on the snow experience with his RX. I think one year he had Blizzacks on and now changed to another brand.

JRichter
12-04-2008, 03:09 PM
Yeah, that's why I passed up snow tires. Sunny and 60 something one day, snow and 20 degrees the next, then back up again but like huzer21 mentioned about Denver, 90% of the time here in the Springs, getting around is not a big deal as the main streets are plowed very well. It's the volume of slow traffic and other's stranded blocking lanes that will screw your travel in the RX-8 on a nasty day, often forcing you to stop at the bottom of hills or whatever and putting you in the same situation as them. Today's trip home from work will be interesting for me. My Kuhmos are on their last leg (nearly balding) and I think I waited too long to get replacements. The streets look as if they are getting bad quick and I think the heavier snow will be later today. We'll see how the RX handles the situation. I think I am going to go w/ a set of the Kuhmo ASX's again but a 235/40/18 this time. Two winter's ago I used some of those cheap spring-type chains you see at Pepboy's during a couple of those heavy blizzards we had then (I was actually stuck in a parking lot on a hill on Academy in the Springs and could not go back the other direction or up the hill due to everyone else that was stuck) and they actually got me back home. These dramatically increased the traction but they were hard to get on and off (especially in 12" of snow) and had a tendency to slip off. One piece came unlatched and slapped the rim of my fender leaving a nasty gash in the paint so I probably won't use these again unless I'm in a pinch. I also would not want these on my car on an uncovered street and would not go over 30-35mph w/ them on - I just like having them in my trunk in case I'm stranded somewhere.

BTW haven't seen anything from Omicron in a while now that you mention it.

How did your RX handle yesterday going home Jrichter? Mine stayed in the garage. Perhaps I should have had studded tires on? I bet if the RX does have those, the tire noise on dry pavements would be pretty high. Lease it sounds that way on other cars. Not sure what to do now with the tire combo for CO snows. Our streets up here in Littleton are plowed but the street outside me home is not and so right now its a white ice rink. A mix that the RX can't handle at all. Things are starting to melt today so the roads will be good for tomorrow perhaps.

Yesterday, I took the 8 to my offsite training class (Park Meadows area). On the way down (from downtownish), I took side streets, and on the way back, I took the highway. I've also got summer tires on the car that need to be replaced. I made it down and back ok, leaving plenty of room in front of me to stop, although that led to a lot of people cutting me off. Only one time did I break traction, and that was because of black ice, not snow. Did I enjoy it? Not really, but I didn't feel unsafe.

I debated dedicated snows or a winter beater last year. Financially, it didn't make sense to do either. Granted everyone's situation is different, as I live within a few blocks walking distance to light rail. If I had to choose, I'd opt to get a beater and just keep the 8 parked.

I did a google research with the tires I have on the RX. They are Potenza RE 960AS Pole Position. It has excellent ratings by Consumers but I did not go beyond that to see how to work on this car. From what I am reading its basically a no go with this tire set up. Even tirerack does not show these. Basically we need to try out snow tires with new wheels, I assume the 17" types. I am in for cheap wheels too and so I might start researching this some to see what the combo would cost me but I could kick myself for not checking out how these perform in any snow before I forked out so much money which really hurt. Since its Christmas time I doubt I can afford another wheel combo now. Well'll have to see though. I did go through the snow but corners and parking were a nightmare. The slightest touch of the gas pedal and the rear started to swing out with with traction assist on. The little yellow swaying light came on often athough I could feel the car resisting going straight before the light came on. Anyone know anyone in CO with snow tires on their RX and how the car handles?

This is funny: I looked at the do it yourself threads and there's one there about winter tips for the RX. A short list of interesting things to remember. Here is the one for tires "Tires-
The OEM RE040 tires are NOT WINTER TIRES. They dont have the tread for snow and they turn into bricks when it gets cold. If you expect to travel much this winter on snowy roads or in consistently below 35F temps your downfall will be the RE040s. Please, please, please get a set of steel wheels with some dedicated snow tires. They will save you allot of hassle and us allot of “the rx-8 sucks in the snow” threads. Really the rx-8 drives fine. Just remember it’s a RWD car, which many of you might not be familiar with, and get those snows on!

So I guess I will look for steel wheels and a snowtire combo to see how this car works with them on. I was trying to avoid this but it looks like I might be stuck with the separate wheels and snow tire option to keep me rolling with the RX for the winter. We are lucky we don' have a lot of snows but when it does I would like to drive the RX but when the snows are 6 inches and above, the car will stay in the garage.

Wasn't too bad. I25 (and sloped onramps/offramps) were already clear and Garden of the Gods Rd (a main street) had sand down already but the side streets were a different story. The car stayed in check on these streets for the most part but w/ me really babying it. I would lose rear traction during acceleration (especially on the 2 long curves) but that is always expected. The slippage light blinked often on these side streets. My apartment complex was an ice rink (as was the gas station I stopped at) though and any steering would give me some loss of traction in the rear but the fronts stayed surprisingly planted. It seems my car will always oversteer more than anything on snow/ice. The overall conditions last night were still not as bad as I thought they would be down here (left work a little early to avoid any 4-6 pm traffic) so not really a good test. I am about to order fresh tires though cause I don't want to take a chance in any conditions even slightly worse than last night.

Wow! Well don't get the Pole Position tires I just bought. They are no good at all in snow. This is becoming my RX complaint thread. My wife took the RX to school to pick up my grandson and she called and said the car is dead. Nothing. I just had the dealer under warranty put in a new more powerful battery last year. What is with this car? I guess I will buy my own battery and will be most likely and Interstate battery. What battery are you using?

My tires are Bridgestone Potenza RE960AS Pole Position Tires They are very good but you know even Firestone does not say anything about their use in snow. I thought they are M/S rated. Man oh man. I'm starting to feel stupid with tires now. I should have checked further before I bought them. Your ASX looks like an excellent tire. What is the full name?

huzer21
12-05-2008, 05:52 PM
I'd say the UHP (ultra high performance) designation of the Potenzas, despite the All-Season rating, would make 'em crappy tires for any type of cold weather, although it does mention "light snow" on the Tire Rack site. I know my Fuzions are absolute bricks in cold temps. You've got a good warm weather tire, however.

The other tires JRichter listed would be Kumho Ecsta ASXs.

Yeah, Kumho ECSTA ASX KU-21 is the one and just checked the actual description (below) which at least mentions the snow for whatever its worth. :)

The new ECSTA ASX combines ultra high performance with the everyday needs of all season traction, low noise and outsanding ride comfort. Specifically built for the most demanding of conditions, the ECSTA ASX uses the latest technology and silica compounding to deliver a truly unique driving experience.
The tire features asymmetrical tread design that optimizes all season and dry performance, large outside shoulder blocks for maximized cornering performance, high angle slant grooves on inside of tread for optimum water drainage, E technology step grooves and sipes increase edge effect for increased wet and snow performance, high volume circumferential grooves provide maximum water drainage for hydroplaning resistance, high tech silica tread compound maximizes dry and wet grip without giving up snow traction, multi zone tread contour provides dynamic casing control for improved comfort and handling, rim protector in the lower sidewall safeguards wheel against scratches and abrasions.

Amazing the Firestone people did not warn me.

Yeah, it's a shame you can't count on the tire retailer to even guide you in the right direction these days. I just stumbled upon the ASX's by accident when I was still living in Texas w/o even thinking about having to get something that would be suitable for CO weather (even though it was weeks before I moved here). The are a rather inexpensive tire and probably don't last near as long as the Pole Positions will but for now that's what I'll go with again. My complaint w/ the ASX's (besides the short tread life I experience which is probably just my lead foot driving style) is that they can feel really lumpy, hard, and make the RX-8 wander around the road a little bit until they are fully warmed up. I'm sure the Pole Positions are an excellent tire beyond heavy snow so I wouldn't worry about it too much if you can manage through the snow days.

I bought Blizzak's last year when I lived in Ohio and they seem to work ok. I had to drive to the airport in a blizzard with lots of black ice on the road and just going slow and being careful, they worked fine. There was still plenty of sliding but if you know your car and aren't going too fast, you can handle it. I think if I had some weight in the back it would have been better. I have it parked this winter here in the Springs. Don't want to get all the dings from the gravel :eyetwitch

Ok I just bought the Blizzack LM-25s yesterday from Big Ole Tires. Still cost me a grand. Tried them out last night and for a change I actually was able to get around. I was going up a hill after getting the tank filled and three cars wiped out into spins. One looked like a Lexus and it hit a curb and stopped with flashers on. I thought I would be next but the car went straight with no issues. This morning our street is filled with packed ice/snow. The car slide at the stop sign a little. A little back end movement to the side a couple time but this was only slight and slide traction control light came on a few times. Driving to work was ok as the streets were plowed somewhat but at hills where you had to stop for a red light the tires slide a little when the light was green and the traction control started working and so was able to move up the hill as long as I took it slow and easy. I am impressed with the snow tires. Get this, when I had the tires put on the battery (Mazda and only a year old) decided to quit. They had to hot shot it to get it started. I drove it directly to the Mazda dealer here in Centennial. The battery was replaced for nothing. The dealer is selling the same Blizzack and at about $100 cheaper!! That was very surprising. I had prices from Firestone (the most expensive), Discount Tire and Big tire folks too. I never thought to have a dealership quote the snow tires. I had a little discussion with the dealer and he said no other tire will work on this car except snow tires. All Seasons just will not work which is what I found out the hard way. They knew it right away and so did Big Tire but Firestone failed to give me any advice about the All Seasons. I have yet to go back and get my All Seasons because they will not fit in the RX. I'll go and pick them up tonight with another car. So its advisable to get snows on your RX but its not a 4WD Honda or something else but its a bit better than some cars. I am not sure what kind of tires the other cars had. I took out our Honda Accord last night which has Mitchlin All Seasons. It slide and spun the front tires but it made it through the snow. I thought the Mazda handled better and had a shorter stopping distance than my Honda. I guess that is because snows are soft rubber and are better equipped specifically for snow and ice. That's the best I can do. The only other option would be to use studded snows but its advantage is on ice and not so much with snow. That's the report I read from Consumer Reports. Hope everyone else is able to get snows on their RX. The sun is out now so I suspect the ride home will be slushy Mag Choloride road junk all over the car. Hopefully by Saturday I can wash that junk off the car. The dealer told me yesterday they were seeing a fair number of RXs not being cared for much with some showing rust. Has anyone had any rust problems? I haven't yet. That's all I need is to see some rust on the fenders or elsewhere.

This morning was pretty slick and I slid a little here and there (back end coming out upon acceleration and steering) but the interstate (most of my daily trip) was already cleared very well so no big deal and no worries of getting stuck. I''m still on semi bald all-seasons, BTW.

The dealer told me yesterday they were seeing a fair number of RXs not being cared for much with some showing rust. Has anyone had any rust problems? I haven't yet. That's all I need is to see some rust on the fenders or elsewhere.

Interesting, unless it's just some minor surface rust from perhaps some scratched paint or something I don't see any RX-8 beginning to rust for years and years to come. I would think the coating and rust protection the metal parts of any modern car is subjected to should be more than enough to keep major rust from happening for a long while but I'm no expert.

Anyways, good to know the snow tires work well - that should give you some peace of mind - and you still have the all seasons you can throw back on when the weather gets better. That's crazy the snow tires were cheaper at the Mazda dealer - I would have never expected that.

huzer21

Rust? Here? Seems odd that a dealer would say they are seeing a lot of "uncared for" cars, when people are bringing them TO the dealer, presumably for some sort of service. Of course, they could be talking about trade ins, I s'pose.

I'm suprised as well, but honestly it feels just as good as any SUV/truck/fwd i've owned except when it comes to certain inclines like steep driveways where you just cant get momentum safely. Nankang NS-IIs own the shit out of sport tires in the snow at least... actually they're a lot more grippy then I expected. An overall better tire for $65 a piece then I expected.

What? Snows for $65 a piece? That sounds real good. I've heard that someone has copied the tread pattern of Blizzacks and selling them 1/2 the price. I think they are Komoto's.

Yeah that was the first thing that came to my mind when the service guy mentioned rust. Like, What rust? He was just commenting that the RXs coming in have been mistreated is what I got out of his comments. Lots of brake dust was also mentioned. Well, mine gets that too but I wash it when the weather is nice and it will get a wash this Saturday. I saw an RX-8 Blue last night in Centennial with NY tags and he seemed to negotiate the ice and snow ok. He was a bit slower than me and gave lots of room to the next car he was following. At one point I was in front of him and by the time I looked in the rear view mirror another car had already pulled in front of him and was close behind me. Folks should be careful though in this crappy stuff in the Denver area with temps in the 20s. This morning there was black ice in some spots but seemed ok for driving. I picked up my All Seasons they took off today. Didn't want them stolen. The tire dealer had them inside in bags by the counter so that was a good spot. If they left them in the garage that might have been an open invite for a steal perhaps. They do a lot of business and this time of the year more so with our snows. One is coming in I think this Sunday. Right! that's because my car will be washed then and so we would not want to keep it clean for more than one day.

yeah I still shocked the Mazda dealer was selling the snows cheaper than anyone else so far. I got a bit of a sick feeling since I just bought mine and thought I had a fair deal considering the other tire dealers. I noticed in our manual that if the car is driven in ice or snow, then snow tires are needed until the winter has passed. Mine dumb engine coolent light came on yesterday so I added a little water to the overflow tank up front. I need to keep a spare Anitfreeze container around for that purpose. I thought the light was the battery but it did not have the + or - signs on the light so it was the low coolent condition noted. It went off after I drove it for a few seconds.

Well CO Drivers. Man was it ever cold this morning. First time I have had the RX out in this kind of weather. It was what minus 18 degrees at DIA this morning? When I was driving to work this morning the outside temp gage for the RX was reading minus 6. It did ok on ice but you had to baby it and leave lots of room between the next car. On one section of the road when I started to stop the car did a slow slide side ways towards the curb but I kept it slow and so no crashes into the curb. With 18" low profile snows I would hate to see the wheel bill for repairs. I found myself gripping the wheel tight as it was a bit stressful driving. I just do not trust the car. Anyway, the SUVs were having a time of it on ice as well but that did not make me feel any better. Since this car will not go through any snow or ice with anything but snows, it makes you feel a little less secure when that's the tire that works for the car. The heater is not a good one as I had to keep it on 3 speed but used outside air. Inside air fogged up the windows which required the defrosters on. Still the heat wasn't real bad or good and it was ok is all I can say for the car heater. The seat warmers worked fine. My drivers side windshield washer nozzle froze but the passenger sidde worked ok. At noon when I took it out for lunch at 8 degrees outside, both washers were working. Car starts up fine in these very low temps with a new battery. A Chevy Tahoe had a little hard time taking off on a slight hill but I think it was simply he was over confident and gunned it too much for sliding take off. As long as I was very light and gradual with the pedal the car went straight. Only one time do I remember the rear starting to give and the yellow swerve light came on but just a second or so. Funny, I can feel the car sliding just before that light comes on. How did the rest of you fair with this mornings drive?

My trip to work wasn't too bad yesterday - just took it slow. I got lazy and never moved my car to the garage Sunday night so when I went to start it it took a little longer (about 10-15 seconds), got worried there for a second but sure enough it fired up. The temp read -6 when I finally started it that morning.

Lol, you can have a blast in the icy parking lots in the 8 plus you learn a little car control w/o being on the streets - just watch out for light poles. :) You can't beat the price of those NS-II's. Just ordered another set of Kumho ASX's. A website (tireseasy.com) had them for $83 compared to almost $150 that Discount Tire wanted them for. The website will ship your tires to a local installer for you. Well, Discount Tire was listed as one so when I called them to check on this, they said they would match the price and have them in from Denver in 1 to 2 days. I guess these tire places are pretty competitive these days.

exsequor
12-17-2008, 03:40 PM
yea nankang NS-II's are like $70 a pop from Tire King. They'll specifically pick up the tires from the intown warehouse for you before you get there. They're pretty cool.

I ended up buying two off ebay for $65 a piece and like two from them (tire king) for almost cheaper if you factor shipping..

Tayninh
12-18-2008, 09:55 PM
Good tire deals are to be had with patience looking for them. Interesting that Discount matched the lower price.

Well stupid me again, I watched 9 News and I thought they said snow in the mountains and just a few flurries for the front range. Oh thanks 9 News. I had my 8 washed Wednesday night and then Thursday coming home the car looked worst than on Wed. I hate that white salty stuff on the side of the car so I had it washed. So tonight I took buckets of warm water and threw it on the car to get some of the mud and yuk from the streets off the car and then I dried it off. Foolish? Well Saturday is expected to be frigid cold again and so no way of getting the car cleaned. Sunday is expected to hit a high of 8 degrees.

I hate winter driving and all this crap on the streets we have to contend with. I should move to Florida and deal with rust.

I can't help but powerwash the grime off my car even knowing it will be back on their the next day. What scared me yesterday afternoon was the 40mph wind gusts blowing all the street grit and sand into the side of my car hard enough to hear it from the inside. I had to repark my car in between two SUV's to try to block most of it. It was a windy SOB around here yesterday.

exsequor

I try an do it too. Got a damned 12" crack in my window that I was able to get "sort of" repaired yesterday. It was for free though. And thats cuz I'd much rather have a slightly visible, repaired crack, then have to pay my deductible atm for a new windshield =P.

Damn sand & sub zero weather! I'm pretty sure that was the fastest ive ever seen a chip turn to a crack.

Tayninh
12-20-2008, 04:04 PM
I've seen it numerous times where the little ding out of the windshield turns into a nice cracked one real fast. Ususally when you shoot a power washer to it in the winter. I just checked my oil and now I have this brown glue like substance at the top of the dip stick. Never seen a car do that before. Must be the rotary design? Yes I am glad we are not in the NE where they throw salt on the road ways. That really messes us a car in quick order. I lived there for 40 some years so I know. I had a 79 Dodge stationwagon once and the first thing I did when I bought it was have the panels and rockpanels coated in tar. They drilled holes to put in the tar. Several years later other wagons were rusting out badly in the back and several owners wanted to know how come mine wasn't even showing any rust. Then I told them I had the tar treatment. Todays car metals don't need that there I think. Here we get the mag cholride white stuff that will put a number on rubber components so its wise to get a power wash under the car when you take it to the car wash.

The RX8 is, without a doubt, the worst adverse weather car I've owned:P

In dry weather, you'll find me keeping up with traffic.

In snow and ice conditions, i'll be tailing semi-trucks that have much better traction than I do.

While it's far from the best, the 8 isn't the worst thing ever in the snow (I've had some that are worse). However, I didn't get the 8 for its winter prowess.

Tayninh
12-22-2008, 06:28 PM
That's true the 8 just isnt' a winter car. Heater is inadequate, driving is a course is stress management and so forth. Well I planned to keep it in the garage all winter almost 5 years ago and now that my plan has fizzled, I need it for the winter. Snow tires help but is not a cure all. I am still getting used to driving it in the snow so I can't report a whole lot other than the All Seasons I have are worthless in any form of snow. Its suppose to snow tomorrow so I am lucky that I can use my wife's car which is a Honda Accord. It runs good on All Seasons, has a good heater and warms up fast. It can handle the winter up to a point. Once the snow gets up past 8 inches its a little difficult to drive.

I took the 8 to the carwash on Wednesday and then it snowed Thursday last week and it messed up the wash job pretty good, so on Friday I took it through the wash again but the touchless variety and not the regular car wash where people are there to hand dry it off with towels and stuff. I really don't like seeing the car really dirty or even a little dirty. I am picky with this car that way I guess.

exsequor

DarthRX8
12-23-2008, 12:43 PM
^Same here. My 8 is my DD and I have to drive slow and be cautious but it really is not bad driving in the snow IMO.

The RX8 might not have the best traction to get going but who really needs to drive fast in the snow. No matter what you drive you will still have trouble slowing down and will have to drive slow anyway.

Is the 8 perfect for snow, no. But for the COlorado Springs snow it works good for me. Except that I to hate to see my baby dirty.

wow So Cal from Denver. I took a long trip in mine to Wisconsin and regretted it. The sports suspension isnt nice with dips and bumps on the express ways. It did well though but I did learn to keep using the high test gas. When I tried to shift down in octane the gas mileage suffered a good bit so it was back to the the right oct. I'm driving it to work for the next two days. My worst car to drive in snow was my 70 Chevelle. What a terriable rear wheel car it was too. It fish tailed all over. It was embarassing when Ford police car followed me for awhile while I tried to keep the car straight. I bet they were back there getting a good laugh.

What I am afraid of and so fear is the fact that when I am on icy street and at a red light that the car will not move but go sideways trying to get up a small hill while others around me with front wheel drive leave me as the car just spins tires and can't get anywhere. So far its been good. Close one time though. I just didn't like the car going slightly towards to curb on ice without much control but as long as it went slow it was able to keep moving. Now with ice just about any vehicle has trouble driving and stopping.

I drove from Denver to KC last fall and had no issues at all with my little road trip. it was fun!

Sidenote, while in Costco over the weekend, I decided to get a price on new tires (just replacement tires, not summer tires) and was quoted $250 EACH for Michelin All-Seasons. Guess I won't be getting my tires at Costco!!

Tayninh
01-03-2009, 04:14 PM
I'm surprised Costco charged that high for Michelins. I have all season Miches on my Accord. It hurt buying them but at the time is was the best.

Let me tell you a true story about Michelin Rubber Company. In Vietnam we operated near rubber plantations owned by Michelin. The company paid protection money to the local VC thuds and when we went in their planatation and had a fire fight with the bad guys, if we destroyed any of their precious rubber trees they would send the bill the local base commander and it was taken out of the platoon leader's salary. They could have cared less about us it was their trees that was important to them. They are French owned by the way. Hmmm, wonder if they charged the French army when they were there before us? With that, a $250 piece for a tire is a bit over the top I think. I plan in the Spring to get the snows off the car and find some black wheels to keep the snows on for winter driving. Of course we have a sports car and the tires for an RX is not main stream and so we pay more for the tires. That's my guess on why they are so pricey.

^Good luck and have fun. I am from So CAL originally (Palm Desert)...

Had a great vacation..I needed it. Ended up spending like 4 days in the valley and like 7 days along the coast. Stayed in frisco, monterey, morro bay, & oceanside. We pretty much just went down 1 from oakland to san diego. I average 21-23 mpg on the way there (I-25 into new mexico then 40 west from Albuquerque)
Had a real safe trip, and tbh with you the rx-8 is an amazing sports car to take on a road trip. It was great! I absolutely loved my performance at sea level..I timed my 0-60 at 7 seconds. Coming back I could definitely feel it start to lack even at like 4k feet. I'm pretty sure I got worse gas mileage coming back. That's to be expected right?

Yup Sea level gives most cars better performance times and better gas mileage.
Speaking of gas, what is driving the steep recently increases of 10 to 15 cents per gallon? Opec or the State looking for more road tax revenue? Amazing, when the price gets to be really cheap someone comes along with a plan to raise the price for their pockets no doubt.

JRichter

The performance difference I feel when taking my car back to Texas (400' asl) is unbelievable. It usually takes 2 or 3 times of the engine being stopped then restarted before you feel the change (ecu readjusting I guess) so it's almost a back to back comparison - no gradual change. The car feels down right explosive down there. On the other hand, I drove it all the way up Pikes Peak shortly after moving here a couple years ago and it felt as if it had like 40hp approaching the gift shop, lol.

dude i think i have a freak ATX to be honest with you. I left the gas station in pismo beach and literally squealed my tires for a couple seconds. Pretty normal in a lot of cars but that doesn't happen here in colorado for me and my 8. Also casually timed (along with my cd track time) 0-60 in always better then 8 seconds.

huzer21

To restate the obvious, snow tires make a world of difference, thank you craigslist! Very happy that I put these on the car. Of course, I'm counting the days until nice spring weather. That mid-60's week was quite the tease. At least it gave me some time to slap a coat of wax on my, and my wife's, car.

I did one time with about 11 or so further up North and it was great being with other RX owners. Seems there is a decent group in the Springs. I am south of Denver but before the Springs. I have an 04 RX touring automatic with 15,000 on it. Wished I had waited till now because the value has taken a nose dive on lots of cars these days. They are not an investment for sure. Still I like the RX but its not my daily driver. Had to purchase snows for it for the first time because the car just does not go in any amount of snow without snowtires. Course in the Spring I will need to go back to the street tires. Hope you enjoy your RX

There is another colorado springs mazda club member that has this kit (I think his forum name is ghost?).

If you ever deceide to upgrade I would contact Mazdamaniac (Jeff Abrams, mazdamaniac.com). He sells an upgrade to the greddy kit that nets some serious power. Wish I had the money to go FI, maybe in a couple of years.

I am taking my 8 to the dyno (SR Tuning) in a few weeks. I was trying to get more people in the area so that we could do a group day at a discounted rate, but only two wanted to play.

If you need your ECU tuned after your install you can get it done at SR Tuning here in the springs. Or you can by an Accessport from mazdamaniac and he will do it for you.

This is a note for the new RX-8 owners. I bought mine new in July 2004; it had 3 miles on it. I just passed 23,500 miles on the ODO. Other that maintenance, ECU flashes, and new tires last month, I have not paid ANY extra for repairs on the car. Still loving it after almost 5 years!

I agree with still loving the 8 after 5 years. I've been without it for the last 2 weeks while it's in the body shop. I miss it so bad. Had about 5 miles on it when I got it. Just broke 40k.

I don't think I can ever give this car up. It just feels so new and great everytime I get in it. No other car I have driven gives the same satisfaction. Well mebe the Mazda5 I got for a rental a few weeks back. :)

Hey all,

I am looking for a cheap RX8 and found one that apparently went for a fresh water dive. The car runs and drives fine but I wanted to see what you guys think before I even look at it. Was it someone's car here? It's a grey 05. Your advice appreciated.

Sweetness! Have you owned a rotary before?

Welcome to the club and congrats on the purchase!

Yea its my first rotary. Been wanting one for a while and finally had the means to get it.

Just hit 1K miles on it. Been a total blast so far. I've had 2 other sports (sporty) cars, an 89 Nissan 240sx and a 2000 Celica GTS. The RX is waaaaaaay better than either of those.

I bought my 04 new and just in the past few months its been getting good remarks from people. The eye doctor last Friday and then the people manning the drive through at McDonalds and Wendy's. Remarks are "that's an 04? it looks so new" Mine has 16K on it and it has snow tires for the first time. Course I wonder now because this weather we've had that all I am doing is wearing out snowtires. They were expensive. That's the only thing I've spent on the car is tires. Still with recalls and all the car has had two batteries, 3 sets of new spark plugs, a new stronger starter and some sort of shield over the gas tank? of course the computer hits too that helped it out some. Still its like a new car to me and I try to take care of it. Seems the rocks flying from other cars that pass by or I am following, seems to be the worst. Just a few pits in the windshield a few nicks on the hood from flying missiles. The car handles well. I am kind of use to the somewhat slow take off but love it each time it reaches 25 MPH and then starts to take off. Kind of neat but its the nature of a rotary. My first ever and my first sports car. I don't really want to get another. Corvettes are good but this car is unique and you just don't see a lot of them around. I also have a silver 02 Accord and you see those lined up at red lights all over town. Not with an RX though. So we are a unique crowd I guess. I saw at the dealer up on the wall in the service department a chrome air cleaner for the RX. Its the new filter type too that I think takes a special cleaning kit to clean it. I've heard that improves performance. Not sure but it looks neat. Interesting that a Mazda dealer was showing it and selling them.

Hey everyone. Its been a while since Ive posted, but I just wanted to check in on how all the colorado RX8 owners are doing. I just can't get over how much i love to drive the RX8 (the turbo kit does help). I still have a few mods to take care of before im done for a while. Just ordered my Greddy Exhaust and also picked up a set of lowering springs (1.4 in the front and 1.25 in the rear). I think it will make the car look even more aggressive. Anyways I hope all of you are doing well. I hope this nice weather sticks around.

:us4allswiHey to All. Newbie Here. Bought a 2004 Black 8 two weeks ago. It is in excellent shape. Took a trip to Vegas via Amarillo across I-40 thru New Mexico, Arizona and Nevada. Then up thru Utah and back across I-70. It ran fantastic and I really loved taking back winding roads. After the trip I love the RX8 more than when I bought it. I was amazed at how many compliments I recieved on the car. Really enjoyed Valet parking it at the Mirage and the Bellagio.
Hoping to find other Denver area drivers that want to set up a Poker Run one of these weekends or if anyone knows of a local weekend get together please let me know.

you guys need to hit the racetracks more often. i've only ever seen one other RX8 on the track. And I'm not talking about autocrossing or drag racing. Sad really. The RX8 just BEGS to be caned and it is really fantastic at chasing down fast, nose heavy cars. I mean 4/24 was just a BEAUTIFUL day to be at the track, and the eye candy their rivals any car club day.

(did I taunt you guys enough? Now I wait for someone to tell me that I need to man up and get into wheel to wheel racing:P).

Hey all,

I just got my RX8 today. Actually picking it up Monday.....
It's a 2008 silver sport model (the price was good)
Car looks nice and drives like new. I already want to start modding it but I have to wait for my first project to be done (383 powered 3rd gen RX7). Once I am done with that, I plan gradual (due to money of course) power mods. I will start educating myself on the forced induction options. I'll check out the events section and will surely meet some of you soon. Just wanted to share my excitement.

Sigfrid, Congratulations! You will love it. Be Careful on mods. Most Engine mods Void the 100,000 mile power train warranty. I think your safe with air intake and catback but under pulleys, headers, turbos etc wil definately void the warranty.

sigfrid
05-03-2009, 08:07 PM
Thanks for the feedback Zoombob. I guess I will focus on a cat back a K&N filter and some sort of tuning to start with. If I keep the 7, I will not mod the 8 much. If I sell the 7, I will not care about the warranty and go crazy.... Talk to you later,

Sigfrid

As long as non of your mods bolt directly to the motor you should have no problem with the 100k mile warranty. I would suggest also BHR's upgraded coils. I havn't purchased them myself but have gone through 4 sets of stock coils last year while I was still under the powertrain warranty. I still have random missfires.

My 8 is itching to get out to HPR. I just wanna go a few times first though. Also Driving school so I won't look lame and confused when if I ever get out there. I also wanna do some Auto X. It all depends how my tranny is after I replace the slave cylinder. Already had McDonald Mazda replace second gear and syncros and am still grinding when shifting into second.

Driving school first, then HPR:) A driving school is a bargain. For $150-175 you get personal instruction on a course you don't know, and by the end of the day you've had all the track time you wanted and know what you're doing..

An open lapping day will cost $150 and you won't know what you're doing, you'll be in everyone's way, and I'll hate you.:P

Hey man. So far Colorado is pretty nice. I love the mountains...the air is crisp....and it isn't 115 degrees! But the bugs and rain are KILLING me. Not used to that LOL

The fight was pretty kickass. When Henderson knocked Bisbing out I knew nothing could up the rest of my night LOL. I was just a little sad when Mir lost to Lesnar....I wish Frank could have put a better fight.

Is there any shop in the west Denver Metro area (Arvada/Golden/Lakewood)that you trust to replace the plugs on my (2004) RX-8's rotary... and not charge a ton of money?

The acceleration is a bit boggy when hot, and its got 42K, so now's the time.

I know that DIY is best, but I just don't have the room or free time, and I have this recurring nightmare about destroying my car.

I've also read horror stories about dealers charging $800 or more just to replace the plugs - but that's out of control. Yeah, I know I have a cool sports car... but I don't have that kind of dough to blow!

Any help would be appreciated in finding a decent shop that won't soak me because I have an RX-8.

There is an autocross coming up at Pike PEak Int. Raceway on 5 Sep.

http://www.motorsportreg.com/index.cfm/event/calendar (this is Porsche's Events)

I am real sad that I missed the autox's that they do right down the street from my house at the world arena. Last year I did pretty well and was hoping to do better this year.

Not many 8 owners that I know in CO or on this site go to the track. Myself and one or two others. The CMZC might have more, but they are not 8's.

Either way hopefully you can get something going. I would be there in a minute! Maybe someone could pick up my 8 and take her for a spin. My wife pulls her out of the garage once a week and takes her for a spin around the block and that is it... :(

Yeah you can check it out. I don't think we have any s/c up here. I would stay away mainly due to the high elevation, the supercharger will not perform as well. Turbos are better for high elevation (among other things)

Hey Colorado RX-8 drivers. I came out of work today and saw my entire back windshield had shartterd. I can't tell if a rock hit it from a passing vehicle or what happened. I think only the tint plastic is holding it together. Little pieces of glass are falling out of it. I called a mobile glass company and its going to cost me $800 something. Wow Are RX read windows shattering or something going on? I'll check the repair section on here to see anyone else had this issue. I am working out of the Denver Tech center, Centennial.

Well my back glass cost $911. Don't ever have the rear glass go! wow. Come to find out a lawn mx dude when driving the mower it threw out a rock about 50 feet away and just happend to hit my rear window and BANG! its totalled shattered. The building owner has insurance and I will get a check for that repair. Ouch! Passed another red RX-8 going home tonight. I beeped the horn and the guy was like being on the moon. No response and he even passed me up later when he made a left turn. He was driving real slow however like he just got the car. Interesting.

DO you have insurance? If so what is your deductible?

I am a new owner of a 2004 RX8. I searched looking for a Denver area mechanic and only found some old posts. I want to make sure I am getting current information. Any recommendations? I am south central, but if the greatest rotary shop is in the north, I guess it's an excuse to go for a drive. She doesn't need anything right now - runs awesome - I just want to establish a relationship doing simple stuff like oil changes so that I can know I trust them if it really ever needs anything big. Recommendations? Thanks.

Most people around here can help you out with work. I'm not aware of too many shops specializing in rotaries.

going turbo soon!!

Sweet man! If you need any help with anything or the install let me know!

I use Precision (or precision imports) I am not sure of the exact name. They are located by 285 and Federal. Mike and Dan are very nice and their rates are good. They currently have 3 3rd gens, an old mazda R (I think) with a bridgported 13B and they work on a race RX8 from time to time, plus my RX8 when it will need something.

It's coming.... The winter.... I'm a little freaked :|

Lived in the desert the past 15 years, can't remember snowfall until Monday.

Do I need to get winter tires and spare wheels, or all seasons cut it in Denver?

Moving into my apartment on Saturday. Has an attached garage for storage if I get a separate set of wheels w/snows. Also cuts my commute from 20 something miles to 4.

All seasons will cut it for you. I had winter tires on last year (picked up a used set on craigslist) but naturally after I put them on, we barely had any snow. The previous winter seasons, it ended up being more about lack of clearance than about lack of traction (as long as you're not riding on summer-only tires).

Of course, if you can swing it, dedicated snows/wheels would be a great solution. Also, since it's your first winter in Denver, beware, they do not plow side streets after a snowfall. They just let it melt. Seriously.

I'm in the same boat as you, man! I just moved here from Arizona after not seeing snow or below 40 degree temperatures for 4 1/2 years! I live in Pittsburgh before Phoenix so I have dealt with snow and bone chilling cold before, but this year will suck!

Was in Vegas for 4 years, and Tucson for 11 years before that. Weeeeeeee..... scouring craigslist and CMZC for people selling wheels that fit... Just in case

craigslist usually has someone selling winter tires and they are almost always a pretty good deal!

I can't take my twice cracked windshield any more. Any recommendations for auto glass in Colorado Springs? I've only been here for 3 years so don't know who's best in this area. :dunno:

Yeah, I guess there is probably not much difference between the main companies. I just need to make some calls. My insurance company gave me quote from someone a while back and it was going to be 263.00 which doesn't sound bad.

This is the best track near Denver. During the winter it will cost $100/day:
