View Full Version : Background music for the 1st RX-8 commercial...
khoney 11-14-2002, 09:02 PM OK, I'd like to see some ideas on the best background music that Mazda could use for their 1st RX-8 commercial. I just bought Peter Gabriel's latest CD, "UP" (he likes short album names, doesn't he?), and as soon as I heard track 2, called "Growing Up", I immediately thought of a guy running thru the gears on an RX-8. When I play that track, I find myself driving much faster and more aggressively than normal. Tony Levin has some awesome bass tracks on it. Mazda should definitely get a lock on the rights to that song... has anyone else heard it and does it make you think RX-8?
And how about some other ideas for Mazda? We have GOT to get rid of that damned zoom-zoom kid with the irritating music - it's way too cute for the RX-8!
Hercules 11-14-2002, 10:52 PM Song 2 - Blur
It's overused but damn, with the right commercial it would kick ass!
Quick_lude 11-14-2002, 11:30 PM Older song by Republica - Ready To Go.
Little Mermaid - part of your world
lol

Sicko :P
It's "A whole new world".. get it right!
Macabre 11-15-2002, 02:28 AM Wasn't "Ready to Go" featured in a Mitsu commercial a few years back?
Sputnik 11-15-2002, 09:17 AM And "Song 2" has been used several times too.
By the suggestions thrown out on this thread (other than those that are personal favorites), it would seem that there is a reason why marketing people overplay certain songs, doesn't it?

They were right:
Little Mermaid - Part of your World (Solo)
Aladdin - A Whole New World (Duet with Jasmine)
Hercules - Zero to Hero.......or in your case Herc: "Hero to Zero"
:p
tallguylehigh 11-15-2002, 09:56 AM Hmm this is a tough one, but I think I found it after a quick stint through my MP3 collection. Lunatic Calm- Leave You Far Behind. It is from "The Matrix" Soundtrack and I think it is perfect for what the RX-8 portrays.
fritts 11-15-2002, 10:36 AM To damn soft! Needs something a little more raw. I say:
Rob Zombie -Dragula
Metallica - Fuel
Aesculapius 11-15-2002, 10:49 AM On a funny note, how about: Rawhide (rollin, rollin, rollin....)
Speaking of the Matrix, Bullet-time would be a good one. (I think that is the one from the slow motion scene in the building lobby).
tallguylehigh 11-15-2002, 10:57 AM Yeah that is also a good song, but its by the Propellerheads and it's called Spybreak :)
jbebernes 11-15-2002, 11:10 AM How about "Rock and Roll" by Led Zepplin?
Already taken?...Who?...Cadillac??!!!
Hercules 11-15-2002, 01:38 PM I like Fuel - Metallica :)
wakeech 11-15-2002, 03:17 PM Chemical Brothers: Block Rockin' Beats
it's hard enough to statisfy you hard rockers, and quick enough to satisfy the younger techno guys, and NOT PLAYED OUT!!! ;)
rockin' ass song...
wakeech 11-15-2002, 04:08 PM actualy, just did some thinking, and i've come up with two other good choices...
James Cook: Rattle and Burn
would be more suited to the Zoom Zoom image, playful and light flamenco guitar... really inspiring, exciting, emtional, and very uptempo
Chemical Brothers: The Setting Sun
not so lumbering and in-your-face as Block Rockin' Beats, this song's dizzying synthesized guitars really add a lot of movement and motion to this further uptempo, but still heavy and rockin' dance tune...
TheSaCK 11-17-2002, 02:55 PM how about... BE SO HORNY by 2 live crew?
RedRotaryRocket 11-17-2002, 03:54 PM You know, I think the comercial that would sell the most RX-8s would involve a few bikini models writhing around on the hood and roof...and maybe a shot of the Zoom Zoom kid in purple velvet, wearing a fidora with a feather, a martini in one hand, and one of the bikini models in the other. Music could be that one song from Ferris Bueller "Oh, yeaaaaaah".
BlueAdept 11-17-2002, 06:28 PM Wait 'til there is a convertable and then:-
Dario G, Sun Machine. (No, not Sunchyme)...
rotorhead 11-19-2002, 09:12 AM How about Back In Black, Problem Child, or It's a Long Way to the Top If You Wanna Rock & Roll by AC DC?
said7 11-19-2002, 10:01 AM "ohhh, only in my dreams,....
as real as it may seem...
It was only in my dreams"
;) lol
pmacwill 11-19-2002, 12:37 PM It has to be...
Prince - Little Red Corvette

Oh God.. Debbie Gibson.. :D
SmokingClutch 12-04-2002, 01:49 PM Circles by Incubus:
Hey, what would it mean to you
To know that it'll come back around again
Hey, whatever it means to you
To know that everything moves in circles
Round and round and round and round and round...
Alternatively, Alive by Pearl Jam would have a little meaning for me, plus the beginning riffs would go great with a quick montage of clips of vintage rotaries.
santino 12-04-2002, 04:06 PM My choice would be The Strokes' "Hard to Explain". The title perfectly describes the car, plus the beat suits Mazda's Zoom Zoom attitude.
jonny b 12-04-2002, 09:24 PM rotary engine would be music enough.
FamilyGuy 12-05-2002, 10:02 AM Metallica, yes... but 'Fuel' is too obvious. I'd much prefer to hear 'Damage Inc.' - now that's a song to make your blood sing.
zoom44 12-05-2002, 10:48 AM how about no music. just the sound of the car starting and the renesis reving up to 9k!
khoney 12-05-2002, 08:10 PM &*$%#!!! I stayed up late trying to figure out how to create a clip of the perfect background music, and after finally getting it done discovered the max attachment size is only about 115K. I really want people to hear this 'cause I think its a perfect match for the RX-8. Can anyone give me any hints on how to reduce 30 seconds from a CD into 115K? The WAV cut I made was over 5MB!
FamilyGuy 12-06-2002, 06:10 AM MP3s can give you better than 10:1 compression of WAV files (your 5 Meg file would become less than 500 k).
You could always post it on a home page somewhere and just link to it.
khoney 12-07-2002, 08:12 AM Good advice - you made me delve into the realm of web pages. I made a lame one and it hosts the clip. The site is at:
http://home.satx.rr.com/rx8uberalles
Whenever I play this track, I picture a TV ad showing the '8 taking hard corners on a winding road, maybe with some closeups of a hand working the shifter.
I think I'm way too obsessed about this car...
Mazda man 12-07-2002, 11:46 AM How about Basement Jaxx - Where's your head at

yeah thats a good song khoney, i can definetly hear it playing in a car commercial
khoney 01-05-2003, 01:17 PM OK, now that I've seen the X-Men car I feel even stronger about this track being in the first RX-8 commercial. It just oozes driving excitement. Link to MP3 clip below:

Artist: Peter Gabriel
Title: UP
Clip from Track 2: Growing Up

i too love the Basement Jaxx, but what about the Chemical Brothers??
hmmm, or something light, airy, and acoustic:
"Rattle and Burn"
Jesse Cook
on the album "Vertigo"
he is a guitarist, and he does the spanish, flamenco kind... really rippin' song... hmmmm... see if you can find it on AudioGalaxy, i know i did (like a year ago)
Mazda man 01-05-2003, 02:11 PM Yeah, pretty good song khoney! Maybe The Red hot chili peppers- cant stop
psukhu 01-10-2003, 05:06 PM No music, just the sound of the motor as someone drives fast on a California mountain back road...
oh wait that's an RSX type-s commercial.
Lensman 03-07-2003, 02:30 PM How about the theme music from Gerry Anderson's 'UFO' from 1969? The Shado cars in that series (as driven by Ed Straker etc) were supposed to be turbine powered because the TV producers thought that would be the norm in 1980 (The Future). They even looked a bit (squint) like the RX-8 and make a similar noise. It'd work - trust me! :)
lefuton 03-07-2003, 03:20 PM chris cornell - sweet euphoria
w/ rx-8 drifting around corner in slow motion
that or maybe that bowie song, ground control to major tom or something like that =p
CraziFuzzy 03-07-2003, 03:30 PM You know what, lets face it... if you have a slow-motion of the RX-8's sexy curves drifting, or just flying around a dry-lake bed (Mazda commercial style), ANY music could sell that image... Has everyone seen the Japanese commercial that was in the media forum (Can't find it right now)... it barely had the RX-8 in it, and was still a good commercial...
Smoker 03-07-2003, 04:01 PM We got one already ! ..... "My Wish Comes True !"
"My wish comes true
It's the greatest love
I can feel in my heart
It's touching my soul with tenderness .......... "
hahahahahah......... :D
