i took 04, 8 to dealer with suspected throwout bearing noise. and dealer said it was completly normal for rx 8 to make noise when idling in neutural, but soon as clutch is depressed noise stops. they said it was gear overlap in trans. and normal, anyone else ever heard of this?

could be talking about the syncros.

If you are talking about a whirring sound, and it goes quiet when you press the clutch. Then yes, its normal.

it is gear rollover.. you hear the input shaft spinning when the clutch is out in neutral..
