View Full Version : Removing cat void warranty?
ghermangsr 08-20-2007, 01:05 PM Does removeing the cat void the warranty? please help. i bought the rx8 took it to the dealer b/c the engine light was on and they called me back and said to pick up my mazda it warranty has been voided.. can they do this?
SureShot 08-20-2007, 01:34 PM The MIL was probably because the ECU was unhappy about the missing cat.
- Your problem.
The engine warranty should still be good, but they are not going to fix an exhaust or emissions problem.
RazzyBRX-8 08-20-2007, 01:37 PM Magnossan-Moss Act. I think it is. They have to prove it was the missing cat that threw the CEL. But, it probably was, therefore, yes, they can do that.
mmats69 08-20-2007, 01:47 PM Most dealerships aren't happy when they see the cat gone. the ones i have had experience with said they void entire warranties when they see the missing cat. The local one here has done it several times. I don't see how they do it. I believe there is a loophole tied to the exhaust that allows then to get away with it. Then again you are violating federal law by removing it so that could give them a way to do it.
I would give them a call and ask then what gives them the right to void all of your warranty. See what they have to say about it.
SureShot 08-20-2007, 02:18 PM The trick is - don't get caught.
Bolt the cat back in before maintenance & inspections.
TeamRX8 08-20-2007, 02:23 PM yes

Even better trick -- don't remove the cat. Thanks.

+1. just keep it on til the warranty runs out then do what you want

Well, no. Why do the kids with Asthma and the old folks with Emphysema have to choke so someone can get a couple more horsepower? What is it with people who think that emissions equipment stands between them and contentment?
"Removing cat void warranty?" Hell yah. Should void license too.
Razz1 08-22-2007, 12:04 AM Oh boy... another global warming fan.
Silver_Surfer 08-22-2007, 12:50 AM Might wana put the cat back and take it to another dealer. Might work/Might not?:dunno:
Oh boy... another global warming fan.
Catalytic converters have nothing to do with global warming. They reduce toxic emissions:
Carbon Monoxide (poisonous)
Unburned and partially burned hydrocarbons (cause cancer)
Oxides of Nitrogen (component of smog, aggravates Asthma, causes acid rain)
These poisons are well-understood and, unlike global warming, there aren't people pretending they don't exist.
ken-x8 08-22-2007, 09:23 AM ...These poisons are well-understood and, unlike global warming, there aren't people pretending they don't exist.
IMHO, everyone who removes their cat is pretending they don't exist...or don't matter, which is nearly the same thing.
Ken
agoodcave 08-22-2007, 03:26 PM Anyone who thinks they can just remove the CAT, go to a classic car show where they drive around and smell the emissions. It brings back memories alright. Leave the CAT installed so we can all breathe easier.
And correct, it has no impact on global warming. Unfortunately, making an impact on CO2 emissions will be much tougher because it is not a by-product of combustion, it is 50% of the combustion process. The other term is water vapor.
CH4 + O2 = CO2 + H2O (yes, this is methane, not gasoline and its not balance - hey, its been 28yrs so cut me some slack)

rodjonathan 07-21-2009, 11:21 PM ha ha some funny stuff on here
nycgps 07-21-2009, 11:31 PM wtf? lol !
before I didnt really cared about people going CAT-Less.
but now, after I got my Fc, it "came with" full Racing Beat Full Race exhaust ... aww it smells horrible, it smells so bad that I cant even sit in the car for more than 10 minutes without getting a headache. jesus. now Im got a new magnaflow cat direct fit, and got a used exhaust manifold and everyhing for cheap. need to figure out where to connect the spit air pipe to ... ahh different forum.
Anyway, dont go CAT less. you're killing NYCGPS !
shazy 07-22-2009, 12:07 AM Get some tuning done you n00b.
EMart11b 07-22-2009, 11:19 AM It's going to be in your paperwork that you removed the cat... good luck getting any dealer to do anything for you.
Yes they can. They don't even like high flow cats so your probably hosed.
What I don't get is how diesel trucks get away with all the black clouds they put out.
Huey52 07-22-2009, 12:01 PM Not to pile on, but you removed your Cat, you get no help. End of story.
That's what tracks and high flow Cat's are for.
The diesel trucks really bug the shiite outta me too.

They're not supposed to. Newer diesel trucks have emission requirements. Even before that, most states had laws against visible smoke. It used to be winked at on the basis of it being just soot. Once you see the soot, though, fuel is being wasted.
On removing the cat... If you do, it violates federal law. The feds rarely come down on individuals, but they do come down hard on shops that remove them. I learned that by googling the topic a bit when this thread (or a similar one) was fresh. If I owned a repair shop, I'd be less than thrilled to have an illegally modified car come in.
Ken
I guess cops around here just close their eyes or something cause people around here leave plumes of that black smoke everywhere. The newer dodge truck are usually the culprit.
myriadshalaks 07-22-2009, 06:21 PM well, it's not just a few extra horse power.
florida has no emissions requirement.
the likelihood of the hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide coming from my car doing any damage to anyone is virtually 0 given how little i drive and the fact no one is allowed to suck on my tailpipe anymore ever since that incident with my 88 in 99.
I like the smell. Stay well back if you don't. this isn't canada.
I like the sound.
I can put the cat back on if I need to.
whats the problem now?
alz0rz 07-22-2009, 07:58 PM i loveee the smell too..
oh and you guys fail because I bumped this 2 year old thread and you guys are responding to the OP..
Huey52 07-23-2009, 08:15 AM Perhaps, but bumping a 2-year old thread for no good reason also = Fail. ;)

Lunacy 11-29-2009, 11:32 AM Sorry for old thread bump, im looking at an 8 without a cat and was wondering how much it would be to get one put on.
laythor 11-29-2009, 08:29 PM if you buy a used cat here.. pretty cheap. if you buy a replacement cat from a dealership.. pretty expensive. Or you could get an aftermarket high flow cat put on.
TeamRX8 11-29-2009, 09:56 PM Oh boy... another global warming fan.
oh boy, somebody in denial about doing what you can to protect the dwindling limited resources of this world. If you think the humanity over the last 100 years hasn't impacted the world more than the last 10,000 you're in complete denial.
ps: it's got nothing to do with f'ing global warming either, it has more to do with the ensuring a suitable future for your family, assuming you're going to have one. Hopefully somebody this selfishly irresponsible won't .... :sadwavey: what else can you call deleting a cat converter for 5 measly hp at 8500 rpm for a car that rarely ever sees it, yet constantly pollutes regardless :dunno:

You sound like you don't know exactly know what catalytic converters do or why they were invented.

Your arguments would be valid if the majority or even 1% of motorists removed their cats butttttttttt they don't so quit whining.
Gr8Bullet 11-29-2009, 11:10 PM My car sounds awesome with my midpipe. And I hardly smell it cuz it's windy around here.
HWK11 11-29-2009, 11:58 PM does midpipe get rid of the warm cup holders
alz0rz 11-30-2009, 12:01 AM not necessarily no.

Using that argument, is it then OK for some company to dump toxic waste or expose you as a worker to hazardous chemicals because it's cheaper and they're less than 1% of the ones who do it? It's the exact same argument and rationale.
Nobody's whining, but somebody is being a clueless dumbass. Go pedal your fail somewhere else.

Dumping toxic waste =/= removing a cat. Apples and oranges guy.
