From today's news:

RALEIGH, N.C. (Nov. 13) - Car buyers in four states will soon hear a religious appeal to their environmental conscience: ''What would Jesus drive?''

A Pennsylvania-based environmental group is planning television advertising in North Carolina, Iowa, Indiana and Missouri to urge consumers to park their pollutive SUVs - Jesus would prefer a cleaner auto, the group contends.

''Economic issues are moral issues. There really isn't a decision in your life that isn't a moral choice,'' said the Rev. Jim Ball, executive director of the Evangelical Environmental Network, which is sponsoring the ''What Would Jesus Drive?'' campaign.

The Wynnewood, Pa.-based group will begin running television ads this month in eight cities to urge consumers to park their sport-utility vehicles and to buy fuel-efficient cars. The ads contend that the devout ought to consider the SUVs' effect on the earth.

But it's a small voice in a sea of SUVs, minivans and pickup trucks - last year they accounted for half the new vehicles sold in the United States. The average fuel economy for all 2003 model cars and passenger trucks dropped to 20.8 miles per gallon, reflecting what automakers and many buyers say is a higher priority on comfort and family needs than conserving gasoline.

Automakers say they'd be happy to sell more fuel-efficient vehicles if that's what Americans wanted to drive.

''If people would be demanding tailfins on cars, we'd be making tailfins on cars. But people aren't demanding tailfins,'' said Eron Shosteck, a spokesman for the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers, a coalition of 13 companies that produce most of the country's vehicles. ''People want power. Consumers want power.''

Ball and a network of like-minded mainline Christians and Jews hope to alter those buying habits.

Global warming and smoggy air worsened by vehicle exhausts threaten the health of humans, plants and animals worldwide, and the faithful are called to preserve God's creation, Ball said in a telephone interview.

''We think he is Lord of our transportation choices as well as all our other choices,'' said Ball, an ordained American Baptist minister. ''When you need a new car, you should buy the most fuel-efficient one that truly meets your needs.''

The Interfaith Climate and Energy Campaign plans to send mailings this month to 100,000 congregations and synagogues discussing the relationship between fuel economy and religious teachings about stewardship and justice.

The campaign is a joint effort of the National Council of Churches and the Coalition on the Environment and Jewish Life.

The organizations plan a Nov. 20 news conference in Detroit, where they have requested meetings with executives from the Big Three automakers and the United Auto Workers' union, campaign director Douglas Grace said.

The groups plan to frame their arguments in moral - as well as economic - terms by promoting hybrid and fuel-cell powered vehicles, as well as other fuel-saving technologies. Hybrids run on both gas and electricity, and use less fuel than traditional engines. Fuel cells, a technology developed to power space vehicles, makes energy from a chemical reaction with no harmful emissions.

''We're trying to show the technology is there, that consumers are interested in it, and they're interested in buying American,'' Grace said.

The Big Three - Ford Motor Co., General Motors Corp. and DaimlerChrysler AG - plan to mass market SUVs and pickups with hybrid technology starting next year. Toyota and Honda began selling a limited number of hybrid cars this year.

Bell said the e-mails and meetings will be supplemented this month by TV ads running in Charlotte and Greensboro, N.C.; Fort Wayne and South Bend, Ind.; Cedar Rapids and Des Moines, Iowa; and Springfield and Kansas City, Mo.

Actually, there is some historical record suggesting JC was into Mopar muscle…”Jesus drove Adam & Eve out of the garden of Eden in a Fury”. I was a little surprised by the Fury reference given that Jesus was a carpenter & all those guys drive Ford F150’s.

who cares

Oh come on, you must have some opinion as to what Jesus would drive.

I think he’d drive a Ford F150 because he was a carpenter & those guys really go Ape $hit over Ford F150’s.

What do you think Jesus would drive???

Wow, add that to the incredibly short list of things I agree with the National Council of Churches on.

I think he'd drive a old 1970's Chrysler K-car. The only thing to get those pieces of crap to go or stop was prayer. But, who would Jesus pray to?

"Come on I know I can get this car going", said JC.

I'm pretty sure Jesus would hitch a ride from strangers.

Considering that Jesus was born in an age before machines, and has no basic understanding of any language other than Aramaic and Latin, I would guess he would scream his ass off if he saw a car moving towards him. I think that this is totally insane, that a carpenter from 2000 years ago would have concept of what a car even was. Typical religious revisionists taking Jesus and molding it to whatever political beliefs they wish. Maybe Jesus was a Republican? A communist? Who cares. People should choose for themselves.

There are thousands of Christian missionaries living in third world nations somewhere who are praying for a SUV so they can drive 100 miles to feed, heal and spread the Gospel to people.

Jesus is against things like materialism, greed, lust, etc....

So basically if your buying the SUV to increase your self image, to show off or intimidate other drivers then that would be sinful. Few inanimate objects are conisdered evil in Christianity, it is really the people using them that are the problem.

Nothing wrong with materialism. As my license plate frame on my RX7 says:

"He who dies with the most toys wins!"

this is by far the most nonsensical, irrelevant and ridiculous thread ever on rx8forum.com

Everyone in this [forum] is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

Ha! Good one, you made me laugh out loud at in my cube at work! :D ... But I alway thought it was an angel that drove Adam and Eve ... in a fury ...

How come no one has made any Viper jokes?

Does anyone (old enough) remember the original TV show, "The Saint" with Roger Moore - he drove some kind of cool little Volvo ...

You’re entitled to your opinion & I respect that but I don’t see any harm in sharing your thoughts on what Jesus would drive.

Perhaps a mini van because it could hold a lot of disciples & would set a good example of avoiding gluttony or my thought that it’d be a Ford F150 because he was a carpenter & those guys really like them.

Thoughts???

Well, this guy is a religious nut, but he's free to speak his mind and asking people is better than forcing them with the government. I am a Catholic who thinks Jesus rides beside me in my Miata. I yell to Him quite often! "Jesus, that was close!" is common, along with "Jesus, I love this freakin' car!"

I remember being a young liberal (I know, that's redundant) eco-nutzi working for PennPirg (that is an environmentalist whacko group-I was brainwashed in college like so many other youngsters). I told my parents that if Jesus was alive today, he'd be an environmentalist. Now I think he'd be a Penguins fan.

Good thread...

Dazz, is that a Cosmo badge?

In severe contrast with what someone said earlier, I feel that by reading this thread I have been truly enlightened. How many other places can you catch references to south park while having a discussion based on cars. Personally I would like to see Jesus wearing a leather jacket and chaps, while riding a Harley Davidson. Your guess is as good as mine.

I think Jesus would drive a rotary powered car. Think about it, Jesus is part of the "triune God" ie three, rotary powers cars have three sided rotors, therefore Jesus would have to drive a rotary powered car, not a pissted-on powered one.:D

Actually, Jay Leno tackled this one on Thursday's "Tonight Show." Why on earth I was still awake at midnight on a work day is beyond me, but I digress.......

During his monolouge, he said something to the effect: "What would Jesus drive? Let's see....he's single.....he's a carpenter.....he lives in kind of a rural area.......sounds like he would probably drive a pick-up truck!"

I can see Jesus cruisin' down main in a big black 427 hemi Charger or a Ford XB-GT coupe with a 351-cleveland. i think that Jesus 'd have a fairly good idea that we screwed up Earth and so he'd think, 'Well might as well drive some muscle!'. Jesus love you.
