View Full Version : Any chance for aftermarket Larger Gas Tank?
Reeko 10-08-2003, 03:33 PM Yes, the milage sucks, but is comperable to similar power vehicles (V8 mustangs others...).
But, they put a gastank in for a high MPG vehicle. (Not sure but I think it is 14 Gallon).
This car really needs a 20 gallon (I would settle for 18) tank.
Any chance that a few years out, some aftermarket company might make a larger tank that might fit? (I haven't looked to see how much room is available).

rxeightr 10-08-2003, 04:57 PM Too bad Mazda engineers could not have provided a larger tank so the RX-8 could easily get more than 300 miles.
Guess I have to sacrifice somewhere to get the rest of the package it offers.
mikeb 10-08-2003, 07:26 PM wouldnt it cost a ton it add a extra tank?
Chrisbert 10-13-2003, 09:21 AM The engineers probably were considering their goal of 50/50 weight distribution when the chose the tank, among the real-estate concerns.

that, and also overall vehicle mass: tanks are kinda heavy without fuel, and very heavy when full... you don't want to have a Miata with a 50L tank in it (pretend one could fit) 'cause it'd grossly upset the balance and performance of the car when full.
Lensman 10-13-2003, 01:58 PM At $6 per gallon you have no idea how depressing this thread is... :(
mikeb 10-13-2003, 03:21 PM $6 OMG

Many car manufacturers are using polyethylene Gas Tanks instead of steel tanks. There is a significant weight savings when using a plastic tank.
elite 10-14-2003, 08:35 PM how many miles does this car get?
my v6 eclipse gets 250 a tank with an intake and exhaust..
i think thats on about 14 gallons....
how are the 8s?
mikeb 10-15-2003, 01:19 AM 8's are averaging anywhere from 13 to 23 I think
mine is getting 19mpg
rxeightr 10-15-2003, 08:36 AM I get between 280-310 miles per tank.
Reeko 10-15-2003, 11:01 AM Wow you must have a bigger tank then me.
My Fuel warning light ussually comes on at about 220.
Let me ask, when you guys get 280 or more miles on a tank, how many gallons then fit in.
I have yet to get more than 13 gallons, even when the warning light is on.

I normally get around 210 when low fuel comes on

Around 14.5 to 15 gallons.
Omicron 10-17-2003, 01:42 PM The fuel capacity of the US spec RX-8 is 15.9 US gallons. See http://www.mazdausa.com/MusaWeb/displayPage.action?pageParameter=modelsSpecsSpecs&vehicleCode=RX8

Agreed --- and my statement above still stands.
