View Full Version : vibration at idle
kamhus 08-06-2007, 01:44 AM My 2004 RX8 gives off a major vibration at idle. It idles at about 7-800 rpm. When revved to 1000 the vibration goes away completely.
What can be the reason. Idle too low? Bad mounts.. What do I need to get checked. The car is absolutely fine otherwise.
Madhops 08-06-2007, 03:20 AM Most likely bad/broken motor mounts. A lot of people have had this problem with the 2004's myself included. Fortunately for me, my car was still under warranty when the problem occurred.
LTABA 08-06-2007, 12:45 PM When we got our 04 auto back from engine replacement a few weeks ago I noticed the same effect. It rumbles while idling (much more so than prior)--but does go away if you shift to neutral. Do you get relief when you drop it to neutral?
By the way, I checked to see if they replaced the engine mounts and they did not. Does anyone know if replacement of mounts with a new engine is standard?
JTtheDude 08-07-2007, 01:52 PM I have the same issue with mine and I HAVE had my motor mounts replaced. My problem seem to be worse though when the car is in neutral. When I put it in drive or park the problem doesn't seem to be an issue. Sometimes my rpm will drop to the 750 mark or even just barely below it. Other than it runs like a champ.
Phil's 8 08-07-2007, 03:11 PM I'ts most likely motor mounts but did you install a CAI? removal of the stock screens will also cause a vibration at idle.
kamhus 08-08-2007, 11:40 PM Car is stock. I have a problem. No Mazda dealers in Pakistan. And I ahve two Mazdas an FD and an SE3P .From where can I get the mounts cheap???

Cheep is the definitive word - there are not any cheep Mazda parts. While the motor mounts are not cheep the freight to Pakistan must be humongous. There must be a source closer to you than the US. Having said that, Rosenthal Mazda has a fair price, Mazsport makes a custom mount, and I'm sure that an email to Mazmart would be fruitful (all are forum vendors). Having them shipped to Pakistan may be the biggest problem as getting something from Pakistan can be a lesson in patience.
X:Faktor 08-09-2007, 07:35 AM I had the same problem and it was the motor mounts on my '04. If I were in Pakistan, I would probably try to get the part from Japan. That would probably be the cheapest route.
My 03 model requires new mounts & is out of warranty....
Have a best price of AU$140 from my local Sydney dealership for each new-style engine mount to suit the 4AT version but there is a catch.
You need a new bracket to go with these newly designed mounts & the bracket is a very offensive AU$480 ( for a God damned bracket :Eyecrazy: )
Anyone know a way around this (new bracket required) issue....???

LTABA 08-27-2007, 09:55 AM Got a new engine on my 04 auto last month, and immediately noticed heavy vibration at idle. Read a Service Bulletin linked on this site that described it to a "t" -- went away when shifted to neutral.
Took it in this morning and got a call an hour later--three engine mounts have been ordered and will be installed tomorrow.
By the way, my check engine light went on yesterday and they believe it is a faulty gas cap. Can it be true, or is it the cheapest fix they could think of?
mdw1000 08-27-2007, 11:58 AM You could check with Mazmart to see if they have a used one.
LTABA 08-27-2007, 02:15 PM Buy a new what? Car? Good idea! Do they sell Hondas at Mazmart?
mdw1000 08-27-2007, 10:27 PM No, the bracket that DMRH needs.

Get the one's from mazsport.com :)

Yes your gas cap can cause a CEL.
DOMINION 08-29-2007, 02:02 AM Yup

LTABA - You mentioned 3 engine mounts. I only know of two. The RH and LH Engine mounts. Could you explain where is the 3rd one? Cause I'm also experiencing vibration at idle about 700 rpm. I've changed my RH & LH Engine mounts just 3 months ago. And the problem had returned. The entire drivetrain and the exhaust vibrates together.:Eyecrazy:
DOMINION 09-06-2007, 11:17 AM Only gusy I know that are useing a 3rd mount are the pro drag RX-8's.
Socr8tes 09-06-2007, 11:35 AM The third one he mentioned is likely just the additional bracket for the right mount. 2 mounts, 3 pieces total.
LTABA 09-10-2007, 02:38 PM Two mounts and a bracket are correct. This took care of the rough idle--smooth as butter now. New engine, new mounts, new brakes (my expense), all I need to do is get a few door dings fixed and it will be better than new! My only concern is that this steady supply of warrantied repairs ends next March, my 4th anniversary.

I have the same problem regarding vibration at idle; which decreases but not disappears, once I drop it into neutral. How many kilometers do you have? My 04 4AT has just under 12,000km which in my mind is too low a mileage for motor mounts to go bad!
Other possible areas to check may be fouled spark plugs due to bad quality fuel in our region.
Either way I will check them out during next service. BTW, I usually get all my Mazda parts from either Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong or Thailand. Much cheaper on freight charges this way.
Goober8 10-05-2007, 08:09 PM I fixed my vibration problem. It was the throttle body all along. It was dirty. JUst had it cleaned and my RPM idles perfectly now above 750 rpm.
Easy fix guys. Hope it works out for you too
kinchu007 10-05-2007, 08:50 PM How does one clean the throttle body?

I really spent months trying to solve this idle problem which is most prevalent after you have removed and replaced the battery terminals. I initially thought it was my Engine Mounts. I'm with my 3rd set of mounts now and the problem still persisted. Subsequently, I thought it was my Gearbox, Coil Pack, Spark cables, plugs, low compression...the list just goes on. Who would have thought a simple 5 min job to clean your throttle body made the whole difference for me. I'll be cleaning it at every oil change now just to be sure. And best of all, it's DIY.
1. Loosen the size 10 fasterner that holds the Filter Box and rubber hose together
2. Unplug the MAF sensor wire
3. Remove the Air Filter Box
4. You should be able to have a direct view of the Throttle Body butterfly
5. Mine had the edges around Throttle Body butterfly stuck with black dirt
5. You can either use a mild detergent or brake dust cleaner and wipe with cloth
6. Wipe it clean and that's it.

I rationalised the reason for the revs to behave badly when the throttle body was dirty purely due to it's inability to have sufficient air flow when there was dirt on the edges. That's why the revs seems to go below 500 rpm and sometimes the engine stalls on its on.

TYVM!
johnbolen 11-09-2007, 09:09 PM i just brought my 06AT in for an oil change at 9200 miles and they said come back next week and they will change my engine mounts to stop the vibs at idle. all under warranty
I was had this prob also. I took it in and they just replaced the mounts and the vibration went away. Glad I am still under warranty
mazsportmantis 11-13-2007, 10:18 AM Yeah, sometimes it is a simple fix. I would consider the spark plugs, coil packs and motor mounts a regular wear item. I have 60k + on my 8 and have had 2 sets of OEM motor mounts fail, at least 6 coils replaced and the spark plugs foul around 20-30k of driving.
I do drive autocross, but am non turbo. I think it is pretty routine. The way I know these kind of things need replacing is the level of shudder in the center of my dash with the AC and recirculating fan is on.
The the spark plugs and coil packs can affect your idle as well.
Mazsport sells all OEM parts if you are looking for a cheaper way to stay in warranty than buying the parts from the dealer. We also offer alternatives for all 3 items for those looking to modify their rx8.
:)
EdwardsB 11-19-2007, 09:52 AM Mine idles right around 850 (like previously stated from others) after the engine is fully warmed up, and there is a vibration in the stick and you can notice the airbag slightly shakes. Sometimes you can feel a slight shaking but then it goes away (almost in a cyclic cycle). If I just barley give it gas and bring my rpm's up to about 875-925 hard to be exact, you can barley even tell the engine is on, it’s that smooth, no vibrations even thru the stick. Could this be wires, coils, spark, or mounts needing replacing. I understand it’s hard to diagnose without seeing it in person, but any ideas from seasoned RX owners. Also this is all being done with the car in neutral and my foot is off the clutch. While daily/sport driving the car is not sluggish and does not feel like it is down on power. Got my first rotary this summer ('04 MT 35,000 miles all 100% stock) and love ever second of it.
Thanks
ELITE-RX8 11-19-2007, 05:58 PM Had my engine replace Dec 2006, and the problem was still there. not sure if they change the engine mount or not. then i put the mircotech piggy back into it, helps the car not to stall, but the problem still there. and the rev sometime drop really bad going up and down. and if i hold the rev on 1000rpm to 2000rpm. the engine doesn't want to stay smooth. then the engine light will start flashing. but if i drive in high rev around 4 to 5k. then the engine lights will goes away.
anyone know why??
ELITE-RX8 11-19-2007, 05:59 PM i got it checked by promaz and he said that the intake vale doesn't stay, it open and close when low rev.
johnbolen 12-07-2007, 09:21 AM New motor mounts under warrenty and the vibration is gone. Now they just need to fix the rear suspension after i did a 180 into the curb on the ice.

lilring 12-17-2007, 01:03 AM yeah i had this happen to me many of times. i have the 04 AT and im on my 3 set of motor mounts, it seems like each year i have to get them replaced. does anyone know of some good motor mounts that will stand up to some power?
invasion08 12-17-2007, 06:34 AM Mazsport sells some good motor mounts
