I just got my Rx8 4 days ago and been trying to look for the thread for my problem but can't find it, and hope someone can answer cause the Mazda dealership say's "it's normal." Ok the engine sounds like it has a pitch like a small turbo but when you floor it it stop's but when you accelerate slowly the pitch reacts and when you are in a much higher gear with a lower rpm it sounds like it's pitching again at low rpms. im not a expert at Rotary's but it sounds like something inside of the housing is grinding maybe?

 

I hear a strange humming noise that is different than the engine tone at low loads like cruising or coasting at times. I can't say I've noticed any issues.

I can hit the fastball.


Not so good on the curve.

 

Maybe a vac leak?
Have a friend slowly work the throttle while you listen around under the hood.

 

my guess would be the secondary intake ports opening more and more at the various rpms.

Roxie, do you hear this sound when the car is standing still and idling? I just took possession of an '05 RX-8 today and noticed a high-pitched (even painful) sound tonight. I had it parked in my driveway and was standing outside of the car. The sound appeared to come from under the hood. As I said, it was actually somewhat painful to listen to. When sitting inside the car, the sound (with stereo off) was noticeable but not painful. I don't know if it was making this sound all day or not. I love my new (used) car, but want to make sure this isn't a big problem.

 

the pitch is not quite like that but when i tap it slowly between gears and floor it then it goes away but it has a small pitch sound your probably want to take that in because rotary dont sound like a dieing pig lol

 

both stop worrying- its normal sounds for an rx-8

 

It shouldn't be painful to hear though. Sqeaking belts maybe? Open your hood and see where it's coming from. Or take it in to Mazda to see where it's coming from. Your '05 should still be under warranty.

 

I guess this is as good a place to ask as any other:

I get intake noise at about 6k and redline. Sounds kind of like the woosh of a turbo. I'm assuming this is normal.

 

Well i have the same problem a little cause when the aircondition is on and when its in park i rev it a little and it sounds like a bov pahshhh
