View Full Version : How do we greet one another on the road?

Is there a better way to greet, depending on what side of the road they're on? What I'm going to refer to is more for opposite sides of the street.

The few chances I've encountered another 8 on the road, I've only come up with a meager wave. Usually I get no response, but it's either they can't see me wave, or I can't see them wave back...it's difficult to see. So I thought of some other ways...

My roommate revs his engine at other Cobra owners, and that seems to work fine for him. It's just that our's (unless modded) are so quiet, nobody can hear us....so that's no good. The other I thought of was to flick the high beams. But then that just bothers the traffic the other way, and makes the person in front of you paranoid, or think you're a jerk trying to run them off the road...or something.

The other day I was heading home and noticed another 8 behind me. We both got into turn lanes, me on the right, him on the left. Instead of going through the yellow light, he held back so we could be side by side, first cars in our lanes. We immediately put our windows down to talk. It was my first road encounter with another owner...so exciting! I share this b/c I'm so eager to share the joy with other owners...ESPECIALLY on the road...which ties into the topic of this post...

...so, what do you guys/gals do?

Remove top - shake chest!

An ideal way to meet and greet other RX-8 owners.

Chicks buy this car too dont they??? :)

Only universal I know of is the wave/thumbs up, but I've only seen Vette owners doing that. Didn't even notice it till my brother got his '01 and I rode w/him...WTF?...I was feeling left out.

This definitely doesn't apply with Mazda rotarys; I read once that when NSU (Germany, I think that's the name) was building rotary engine cars the drivers used to stick up their fingers. Each finger represented how many apex seals they had blown. It was not viewed as a negative, but rather more of a show of devotion/love for the engine despite its early drawbacks (this is before Mazda was building the engines).

I wouldn't suggest it for rotary drivers now, just thought it was an interesting side note.

I guess forming a triangle using 2 hands is out of the question on the highway... I saw a few pics from an 8 meet in Japan and everyone put their hands in the form of the rotary. :D

I have yet to see another 8 on the road in my 8. I did exchange thumb ups with a Z4 and nods with an STi.

Hey I was just down in the Rockville area with my RX8. Spent a night at Dave & Busters.

I think 3 honks should do it. See one on the road do the tri honk!

It's the same way with the WRX, we wave, honk, flash our lights etc... It's a pretty tight community and I have yet to meet a jerk that owns a WRX, that wasn't the case when I had my DSM years ago.

I was going to suggest the triangle thing for some comedy effect but it seems someone beat me to it, maybe you guys could all get little neon pink flourescent lighted triangles that you could flash when you see another 8. You might get more than you bargained for if you go with that one though :p

That's the standard start for street racing from a roll, again you might get more than you bargained for and maybe even some dirty looks :D

How about Mork's hand sign? Two fingers seperated from the other two? I guess hard to see and for some reason my fingers go forward when I try to do this.

How's about the Star Trek Vulcan signal (whatever it's called) - ya know, the "V" thing. Then again, that might be too geeky.

We should also have a separate signal for fellow forum members. It'd be nice if those license plate frames were available b/c then we'd know for sure whether to use the first or second signal... (hint, hint)

i vote NO on this one....someone could take it the wrong way. i mean, have you ever watched WWF a while back? one of the wrestlers used this--with both hands though--to indicate a vagina. can i say that? oh well.

I dont like people flashing headlights because then I always think one of my lights is out

I would think the best way while driving with your window down is to just stick your hand out the window and give a quick wave. If you have a sun roof, I would say shove your hand through there and wave.

Flashing the headlights could be a bad thing.
Honking could also create some strife.

There's always the middle finger. But I dont suppose anyone would really take kindly to that as well.

hmm, does the RX-8 have emergency flashers or can you turn your fog lights on/off? That is all I could think of.:o

I use the big silver button on the top of the Bose.....

Has a red triangle on it, that IS a rotor, right?

Why else would they put it 'front and centre' like that?

Quite effective, with the huge turn signals both flashing together.

How about a bent arm with your figer tips touching your forehead. Like standing in salute, keep your fingers on your forehead, then move your arm in front of you to form a triangle. Call it the Rotary salute. Only problem is when you make the rotary salute your big bro sitting next to you is going to smack your hand that is now in front of your face and call you a retard...Don't you remember the retard test when you were a kid?

Worse, it could indicate that the pedestrian should cross just when you want to show off 9k rpm in 1st...

Based on the people on this forum, I would suggest the following:
(All in good fun)

1 fellow rx8.....Big wave and grin.

2 Vette........just pretend he is not there, DO NOT make eye contact. Driive away slowly, say to yourself "class, not crass"

3 evo and wrx...Middle finger extended (If your me, duck the bullets) Ask how tranny is holding up, and if the owner is part of the "photo album". Laugh while you drive away.

4 bmw ....if not the C coupe, see 2. If it is the c, point and laugh

5. 350z.......Do not race. Be happy you can hear your radio. (If me, Drive to nearest police staion, sign complaint for stalking)

6 rx7.....see 1

7 TT.....Admire the interior, ask if it is the new beetle...

8 neon.....Best to see 2, little buggers are fasttttttttt.

9 G35...Thumbs up, they seem like nice people.

10 Mustang...Try to get them to spin out. If yes, fine. If no, see 2

11 boxster........thumbs up, again they seem nice.

12 1990 honda civic with 18"rims lots of chrome, neon lights and no exhaust......what most non mazda owning trolls here drive.....No point in responding.....keep windows closed...let pass, as driving will be erratic.

Or you could not be a jerk and have respect for other cars and people that drive them, dislike me or any person all you like but to just make judgements like that on a group of car owners based on a small sample is childish. You represent the RX-8 well...

It was a joke, for gods sake, and you know, your grammer is getting worse than my spelling, and that is pretty bad but......Well, if the shoe fits............actually I have met up with a few wrx, and one evo. For some reason, they all feel the need to rev the engine and look at me from the corner of their eyes.......

Have meet 2 nice z owners (350), and more then a few less then nice ones....

By the way, I liked it better when you were not talking to me.
Can we go back to that nice place... Just put me on your ignore list.....

Sorry Klegg, but someone reving their engine at you, and looking at you out the corner of their eye does not constitute meeting them...

As a former Miata owner the wave was always a must. Since the RX-8 is not a convertible the wave may not be a easily notices. I suggest a double flash of the head lights. Somewhat suttle but we'll know.

That was too funny.

It is a pity the sunroof isn't standard for *everyone*. Could tilt the sunroof up and down and make the car wave instead ;)

I did that once and lost my left arm. Crappy too because I used that one for drinking coffee.

Yes, I am joking. Although I did do a full arm wave to a guy in a first-gen and then later realized how dangerous it was.

Whewwww.. One of my good friends lost his arm, and I was going to pm you if you wanted to contact him..real nice guy, car nut. Drives better with one arm then most people with two!

He did buy a G35 though......but I do not hold that against him. He loves the 8, but not the at version.
