Just curious, there seems to be a rather large age gap on this website, and I'm curious as to what we do/where we come from.

23 years old, and I'm a member of a research and development team for a fairly large biotechnology company with a lab based just outside of NYC in NJ.

Ill be 21 in amonth, and Im currently working two jobs to put a roof over my head while Im in college, which is my first job.

First job: Full time student of Photography (Jr. Year) at Florida International University.

Second job: Automotive Photographer/ Inventory Management/ Online Sales and Listing Management-- for Brickell Motors of South Miami. Basically, Im the dude who takes the pictures of the cars and does the online listings, then put the window stickers in the vehicle. Its not a photography job for Turbo Magazine or C&D, but its a start. Pay is alright though.

Third job: Waiter/Caiterer for an upscale condominium resturant. Damn stingey ass rich folk never tip, otherwise Id make decent money when they call me to work.

i do skip tracing, and investigations. i also am a private executive security consultant, i hook filthy rich guys and psuedo famous people up with ex military/ex police guys for private security gigs and for drivers etc. the super rich tend to have more enemies than the rest of us peons for some reason. or they are just more paranoid. i mean, if you have to buy an suv with B5 armor and windows that dont roll down with airless tires just to have your kids driven to school by an ex marine wearing body armor and a BIG handgun, you made someone mad, or youre crazy.

It's all about certifications and knowledge my friend. A degree will get you in the door but you need to find your niche and learn it well. Cater your certifications around the field you want to work in. You can never know everything but you can have a good understanding of many things. My personal specialty is in health care and practice management/billing software. You have to know how medical billing and practices/hospitals/imaging centers work in order to really setup the big software packages to work well. All the payor rules, electronic clearing houses, electronic claim formats, etc.

You have to be flexible, and do the work, get your hands dirty. I know guys with degrees in net admin that can't even do a fresh OS install and setup a computer on the network properly. You have to stay current so that when times are tough you can do the work your employees do. I have adapted over the years to stay needed. It's hard to find a practice manager who also knows IT, phone systems, etc. so I will always be hard to replace.

Consider a degree or doing an extended education certificate in Health Care Information Technology if your school offers it. And don't listen to your teachers for job advise. Remember those who can't, teach.

My father is a Net Admin and he gets interns from Baylor all the time that are about to graduate with degrees in Network Administration and then when he asks them to add a workstation to the network they don't even know where to begin. Whereas he gets kids from Texas State Technical College as well and he says they know twice as much as most of the Baylor kids because they are more hands on there.

Aside from my current feelings about it, the job is actually not that bad. It pays okay and the work load is usually not ridiculous. It really doesn't take any certifications to get into doing what I do; basic TCP/IP knowledge, be able to get around Windows 2003 Server, and you're set. Our positions were actually saved from being sent to another country because that desk claimed it was too "complicated" to support; I'd blame this on the support model and internal company politics.

I'm trying to get out as I've grown tired of it since I've finally completed my B.S. in CS & math, which has absolutely nothing to do with my job. I try to automate things as much as possible where I can.

Because of the tools available and distribution limitations, freely putting executables and fancy scripts on all ~700 servers is not an option. My means of automating things are pretty much built around Perl scripting, kludgy batch files, and clever one-off commands; all of which I in turn share with my co-workers to help save our time from doing stupid tedious work.

Thinking up solutions to problems while only using the native system tools and the few utilities our distribution image grants us can be a challenge at times. Doing these kinds of things is all I have to keep me from going crazy here while trying to look for a new job.
