View Full Version : Why is the Rx-8 looking uglier and uglier?
block911 11-10-2002, 08:40 PM Sorry but the latest pix with the front hood looks really really awful. It looks like the top of a hot air balloon with all the obnoxious curves. Just release the dam prototype that was came out last year.
Jeebiz and wait till it comes out and they fubar it just like the Mazda 6 with crazy package options. What you want a moonroof well you need to get leather seats and Bose speakers.
Don't believe me? Spec out a 6 at mazdausa.com. Want abs??? fork over more cash for a spoiler.
oh well I'm out
Please just make a aniversary edition release of the rx-7 with the rx-8 engine..
Oh and wtf??? rx-8 has less torque than a 6s??? 35,000 for a car with only 154 torque?
/me saves his cash

maybe its ur mom thats looking uglier and uglier?:p
Takumi 11-10-2002, 09:57 PM I actually like how it looks now then the prototypes. I don't see the hot air balloon where is it?

Doesn't sound like you were ever "in". You don't get the RX-8, understand rotaries, or cars in general.
If you want the most torque for your $ (there is a good way to measure a vehicle's worth) then get a Dodge Ram.
By the way, the hood has not changed from last year's showcar. If you are seeing hot air balloons, then pass me the pipe.
Takumi 11-10-2002, 11:05 PM 3-4 foot hood compaired to 60 foot hot air balloon . where is the resemblence
Hercules 11-10-2002, 11:11 PM Seriously... this guy hasn't been following the car in the slightest, and now makes stupid comments.
If you don't like the way it looks, that's fine. If you think it won't perform, as Grimace said.. pass the pipe.

omg HILARIOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hercules 11-10-2002, 11:26 PM By the way... Mazda is only making the packages the way they are (and though I do disagree with it) because well.... they need to make money.
Thus, the people that want to have their cake and eat it too will pay for it. So if you want the sports package, you need the whole kit n' kaboodle. It helps to make Mazda money, and from a business standpoint if their numbers say that it will work... then let em do it. Keep in mind, the 6 even FULLY loaded costs less than the new Accord and Altima... so I don't see what the big deal is.
IWANTanRX8 11-11-2002, 08:44 AM I realize that this comment might appear to be a tad bit "off topic" as it relates to the Mazda6.....but Mazda has commented that the options selctions on the 6 website are messed up and will be "adjusted" shortly.....whatever that means!
karmavore 11-11-2002, 11:03 AM This guy has posted 41 times, so he HAS been following things, and whether you all want to admit it or not, he has a good point.
The car is getting uglier. The torque is low.
Perhaps you guys are too high on Rotary Fever to be unbiased?
Luke.
block911 11-11-2002, 11:45 AM Wow what well thought out retorts to the points I bring up.
Pfft the car is getting gayer and so is this board.

probably due to the amount of complaints from people on this and other forums. maybe they are listening

You know what... you're right. We are all wrong.
So do yourself a favor and don't buy this car and never come back to the forum. We won't miss your trolling.
Bye!
karmavore 11-11-2002, 11:50 AM Damn, I forgot your opinoin is the only one that matters...
I swear, I've never been on a more CLOSE-MINDED forum.

Freakin' hilarious! I can't stop laughing...nominated for post of the year!
But seriously, now folks, I'm from the Miata Net. I see all this complaining there and here about the RX8. I don't understand why people go to such lengths to complain...
I like the RX8. My Miata has very little torque but I understood that 106k miles ago when I bought it in 95. Nothing will ever look as good as that 3rd gen RX7, though...

Hey man, I totally understand what you mean. Just remember, Hercules does not represent everyone on this forum. He has been asked many times to calm down - he loves mazda and can't stand to face any criticism on it. I ignore his posts, and I suggest you do the same too. Until he improves his attitude, his posts will be nothing but a hunk of crap to me.
Beemer 11-11-2002, 12:44 PM Well, I think it's getting nicer and nicer since the evolve prototype. So, if you don't like it anymore, buy something else, it'll make me more exclusive in my RX-8 :D

I see..
So what companies do I hate, if I may ask? I like Mazda and nothing else? Don't think so. My favorite car company is BMW though their reputation is slowly sliding down.. Mazda is earning new points because of the strides they are making with the 6 and hopefully with the 8.
I don't like Nissan/Infiniti because their build quality is subpar. I like Acura because the TL, CL, and RSX are probably the best FWD cars on the road.
Let me make it clear.. I criticize EVERY car company because everybody can improve. I do have a special place in my heart for Mazda because they make the car I own, and the car I will buy.
There's nothing wrong with my attitude and the posts I've had towards you in the past were in good fun (or so I thought) because I always joked and put my happy faces in them.
But if you want to call me names, say I'm biased, whatever.. that's fine. My point in replying to this post is that the low-torque issue has been discussed, and that this car is meant to be a high-revver and everybody knows that and should expect it. People trolling on the forums saying it's got low torque and implying it will be slow well.. yes it irks me. Beauty as I've stated just before, is in the eye of the beholder and while I like the car personally, I make no qualms about people disliking its look. Everybody is entitled to their own opinions.
As per your personal remarks about me.. I've never been asked to calm down. I got a PM once from Toadman not to jump on the newbie in the forum for not using the search (and to which extent I apologised), but otherwise nada. My 'attitude' is the same to every car company -- make a car and I'll praise you for the good points, and criticise you on the bad points. Since neither the 6 nor the 8 have been released yet I have decided to hold off criticisms like these just made because nothing is really SOLID and known about the cars. The 6 has some gleaming reviews, but until I drive I can't say anything, especially on build quality.
So why don't you take YOUR attitude and shove it? I haven't been anything but cheerful in whatever slight interaction we've had, and now you go so far as to call me a person with a bad attitude that posts 'hunks of crap.' Don't like em? Leave. Take you and your moron trolling friends with ya. Don't let the suicide door hit you on the way out. :D
And if you should choose to settle this hostitility aimiably, I have no qualms; all is forgotten.
Cheers,
Hercules

Alright, a few things karma and block911... is the car uglier?? matter of opinion: it's completely normative...
i disagree whole-heartedly, becuase i like aggressive looking cars, and this latest look is remeniscent of the last styling of the RX-7 front end... in short, i like it.
Second, the torque is low?? compared to what?? your arm?? a 7.5L V8?? depends on what you're talking about... for an atmospherically aspirated rotary engine, this thing's got truck loads of torque; oh, and btw, just compare the torque curve of this engine with any other you like... you'll then see that peak numbers mean nothing...
to save Rich some effort, i'll do my best to tell you how dumb you guys are in assuming that torque is the determining factor in performance. i'm not going into detail, but basically it's the amount of WORK (which is force * distance, or in this case force (torque) * distance (RPM)... the area under the torque curve) which is important...
and if this flies over your head (as i expect it would), think about F1 engines: they're 3.0L V10's, made with pistons so far over square that the reason they DON"T make the stroke shorter is so the valves can open into the cylinder (seriously)... with strokes a few cm's long, they have very very very little torque... so why are they so fast??? oh ya!! because they REV REALLY HIGH!!! thus the amount of work they can do is equal to larger engines which don't rev as high, not to mention when they get up to 19K rpm, they're also making tons more POWER too... :)
the reason that, yes, some of us are high on rotary fever is because we UNDERSTAND THIS TRADEOFF the rotary makes, which is lower torque from the small displacement made up for by tremendous power due to the power-stroke-per-rotation-of-the-eccentric-shaft (which is the same as a 2 stroke, but has all 4 cycles)... no, it'll never have oodles of peak torque, but it will always have that pancake flat curve, inherent advantages which lend it to high rpm operation, and devoted believers in the concept.
stop trolling.
bwayout 11-11-2002, 01:37 PM I also don't mind the low torque ... but I've never driven a rotary before.
IMHO ... I only wish that mazda played more around with the rear window glass roofline and increased it to more of a 60 degree angle from it's current 45 degree to be more of a fastback style like past rx-7's were ... But I'm sure there are those of you who love it the way it is! ;)
ZoomZoom 11-11-2002, 01:49 PM First of all I am not coming to the aid of Hercules because he does not need any of my help. However, I am not ashamed to say that I always look forward to his posts. They are typically logical and well thought out. There have been times that I did not agree with his argument(s); but I could probably count those on one hand, and with over 800 posts that says a lot to me.
I find that Mazda people are passionate people; passion for the automobile is what attracts many people to Mazda in the first place. To hold that against him is just not fair.
Admittedly Herc does not have the patience of a saint when it comes to people trolling through this forum. And to tell you the truth, I don’t blame him.
It's funny, the people who think this forum is closed-minded think that the only opinion is based on the posts by several (ahem) vocal members. I think that in it self is closed-minded.
The only reason we make fun of those people is because they present their argument with some sort of obstinate and intelligible logic, like the car is gay.
And just what do you people expect from a comment like that?
If you don't like the car, just say that. Without showing us the slightest shed of etiquette, we will do the same. If all you wanted was attention, you got it; and the ire from the majority of posters here.

Here, Here! We would all do well to remember that if you want productive, polite conversation, the way to get it is to be tactful and polite, even to the people who aren't. Flaming the flamers and trolls is the quickest way to guarantee that no useful converstation will occur.

I think we all remember the daily morons that posted all kinds of profanity on the forum and got banned the same day... I think from themy my patience wears thin very quickly.
Thanks ZoomZoom; there's always that motto that if you don't have anything nice to say.. not to say anything at all.
BlueAdept 11-11-2002, 04:10 PM This thread is a disgrace!
I've not seen so much posturing or so many personal attacks anywhere else on this board, and whoever said it's unacceptable was right. This forum is not about that, and you can be sure that we won't allow it.
We are all entitled to our opinions, mine are as follows...
1. That picture with the RX-8 badge in the grille is the worst picture of the RX-8 I've seen... yet it is mostly the picture, and not the car that's at fault.... the lighting makes the front look much more different than it really is.
2. The torque issue has been discussed, and it seems to me that the fiigure is meaningless unless taken in context of RPM's as well as weight and other factors.

block911 11-11-2002, 04:49 PM pfft I dig mazda's and I'm more than likely getting the Mazda 6s. Just the Rx-8 in the lastest pix looks wayyy diffrent than the yellow machine we all see in the top left hand corner. Maybe it's the lighting??
dunnoo
Anyway immaturity reigns supreme here and I've been taught never to stoop that low. Which makes me thinks most of you are 10 year old magazine racers.

kwolfman 11-11-2002, 04:58 PM These torque complaints are of no concern to me. My 1981 RX7 had a whopping 100 HP, 105 flbs or torque (33% less than the Renesis).
The car was certainly not a drag racer, but it was a blast to drive. Isn't that really the main point behind the RX series of cars?

A point that the trollers fail to see....
Thanks for that :)
Elara 11-11-2002, 05:24 PM Ok, I'm sure someone is going to think I'm being an over-sensitive female, and maybe I am, but if you're going to point out you don't like something or someone, could you NOT refer to it as being gay? Call the car stupid and ugly, call the poster an idiot, call the entire forum a bunch of moronic ass-backwards dipshits, I don't care- but calling something gay is about as uneducated, biased, and insensitive as anything I can think of.
Sorry if I've offended anyone- that's just one word that really pisses me off when used as a derogatory term.
Toadman 11-11-2002, 06:52 PM *sigh*
Thread is padlocked. Tis' sad to see it denigrate from a provocative styling opinion to flame-bait. Time to nip this one in the bud. Any thread start-ups attempting to revive this topic will result in the poster getting a surprise without warning. Enough is enough.
