What have you folks been putting down as a deposit when you have placed an order?

I told one dealer I wasn't giving them much because even if something happens that makes me willing to back out and give up the deposit, no matter what the size, they will have no problem selling the car. This was after he told me they usually asked for $1000 and I said I was thinking more like $250. He looked a little stunned.

My current car got ordered by the dealer while I still thought about it because they knew they would sell it either way. Now I can understand it a bit if I am in a bidding war to get a order in against other buyers.

Only put 500 down. Don't have to worry bout getting a refund, cause I'm keeping my baby. :)

My dealer in So Cal wanted only a 200 dollar deposit, plus it was refundable.

and this was a few months ago when the pre-orders first started...

I didn't have to put down anything. We agreed on the price, I got a confirmation fax with price, my VIN and option list, plus the estimated delivery date.

After receiving this, I verified that the VIN is a real one and is assigned to my dealer.

Actually, my car was already ordered by the dealer end of August. They only needed to make a change to the option list, and in the meantime these changes showed up on the Mazda USA site under my VIN. :)
