I traded in a 2003 Honda Accord Coupe (5sp AT). It was an awesome car, but the ergonomics didn’t fit my body as well as RX-8’s do. Plus it drove like a Buick compared to the RX-8.

sold privately on ebay a 1997 Eclipse GSX Turbo. Probably faster than the 8 but no where near the handling or refinement. Great Infiniti stereo better than the Bose in the 8. Loved it but time to move on.

My RX-8 will replace a 94 Ford Probe GT. I love that car too - handling is excellent, power is adequate.
I'm the first owner of the Probe, had it over 9 years now and it served me very well - but as it was said before, time to move on.

A 93 Maxima SE which I bought new and drove for 180,000 miles. It was still in great shape when I sold it to a friend, but it kept having things that needed replacing, and I drive too much for that. He only will put around 7K a year on it so it won't be breaking every month.

Great car though! The most reliable vehicle that I ever drove, fast, great winter handling, but it had torque steer of a type that can't be described, and it handled like a sedan. Taut sedan, but a sedan.

I'm going to miss it.

76' Nissan 280Z...tons more power in the 8, although the Z still sites in the driveway blocking the 8 so that no one can steal it w/o having to move other cars at night.

Traded in a loaded '97 BMW 328is. It was a sweet car, but not as sporty as the RX-8. The maintenance was expensive and the resale value was taking a plunge....so time to trade up.

2000 Celica GT-S - nice car that drew looks and praise when it first came out, decent power, but very noisy inside. The '8' is very quiet and smooth (more refined) compared to the GT-S.

I was driving my dad's beater, '80 t-bird (trying to save for something nice) until it croaked last year. Then had to put up with the family van, '94 Pontiac Transport :( , or occasionally my parents '00 Grand am, while I looked for something for me.

Considered tiburon, eclipse, firebird, mustang, rsx, wrx until I came accross the 8. I said to myself this is the car for me. Something no other car did for me. The 8 will be my first car.

But I have to put up with the van until the 8 gets here, a couple of months. Think it'll be a step up.

Gee I thought I started this thread two weeks ago!

I traded in a 2002 TT Quattro.

Never really warmed up to the TT. I got seduced by the interior and the turbo surge.

Over time the car came to feel heavy and sedan-like. not much fun to drive. Shifter felt like it was mired in pudding.

My other care is a Miata and i definitely enjoyed the Miata more...so I went to the 8 and got the best of both worlds...go-cart-like handling and plenty of zoom-zoom.

I am thrilled to say the least.

Traded in a 2001 626SE, only had 12,000 miles. Really liked that car. Guess it was middle age crisis that brought me to the RX-8. Glad I made the trade.

- 1996 Mitsubishi Mirage LS

A great no-hassle commuter car. I didn't trade it in, just gunna use it as my daily driver/beater. The RX-8 is the first "new" car I've ever owned. All my other cars have been used.

Its going to be added to the collection of 7's and Miata :) once it gets in. The RX-8 will be the slowest car except for one of the FDs, since it isnt running... but it will be quite fast when it is running.

2001 Nissan Sentra SE-R Spec V
Nissan has their problems with lying about HPtoo.
When I bought it they claimed 185, and it made 143 at the wheels. Intake, exhaust and some tweaks fixed that problem, but with the added power it front wheel hopped like mad under heavy throttle in low gears. I could have fixed it with solid motor mounts, but it already rode like a rough brick, and that would have made it worse. Besides it is a "cheap ride" nothing like the feel, handling and features of the RX-8.

Before I got the 8 i had a deposit on a 350Z Track Pack. I placed the order in December 2002, with a promise of delivery in April.

It is a lot faster than the 8, but the dealer screwed me around on delivery, and I gave up in May.
In hindsight I really apreciate having rear seats, a trunk, and a better stereo . The 8 feels a lot more luxurious as well.
The Z would kick it's butt in power, but I am fixing that little detail, and i save myself about $3K in the process..

Then the announcement on the 8 came, and I was lucky enough in June to pick up the reserve on one at a dealer when the original guy with the reserve dropped his as he was wanting a moon roof, and the one coming in did not have that.

A friend of mine who had a reserve on one heard about it and phoned me and I lucked in. I gave my friend a bottle of 18 year old single malt for his efforts.

Traded in my '02 WRX. Though the WRX crushes the RX8 out of the hole, the RX8 feels 100 times more stable at speed and hard braking. More of a driver's car in my opinion.

95 toyota pickup, last of its kind, was the same year they started selling tacoma's. just replaced the clutch on it this weekend and now i'm sore all over from wrenching 14hours. god i love that truck...

Mazda Protege5. Great looks and good handling, that strut bar really makes a difference. Looked at the 350Z, TSX, and MB 230 Kompressor. The Z was fast but had poor rear visibility and poor interior design and quality. TSX had a nice interior, better than the MB IMO, ok but not enough power. MB not worth the money.
Love my 8, superb handling!!!!!!!! Thats why I got the car, handling.

I had put 96,000 miles on my 2000 Firebird in only 3.5 years.
The Firebird was fine as long as warranty lasted.

Some seal broke at 36,500 miles (warranty: 36,000). The dealer repaired that for free.

The catalytic converter broke at 81,000 miles (warranty: 80,000).
Cost me $1700. Needed a new muffler as well.

At 95,500 miles the transmission started to act up. I gave it back to the dealer before the tranny problem was really obviously noticable.

The RX-8 is a luxury car compared to the Firebird with it's 70ies styling and also 70ies technology (no independent suspension...)

After the Firebird, I'll never buy an American car again.

Although it wasn't "replaced", I'll be driving my 1994 Lincoln Signature Town Car during the snowy months. I thought going from a Land Yacht to an 8 would kill my back, but the 8 rides really really nice.... actually a lot nicer than the 1994 Lincoln Mark 8 I almost got instead of the Town Car. Although the Town Car has been a workhorse (155,000 miles in 9 years), I will also never buy another 'merican vehicle again.

A switch?

Try trading a 2002 Ford Excursion Triton V10 (7,500lbs) and a SeaRay boat (mistake). Although the 8 gets about same MPG as the boat.

;)

Quite a change from the Excursion to the 8, but I missed my sport car days. Previous Datsun (not Nissan) 280ZX, Supra and VW Passat.

When I do finally get my '8' it will be replacing a modified Jeep Wrangler sitting on a set of 35's. A bit of an extreme change and not to mention the change in view from the drivers seat. I'm used to sitting up high as opposed to the view I would be getting from inside the cockpit of a blazeing RX-8.

Not even close. :) I traded in a teal '94 Volvo 940 Turbo wagon with 146K miles, huge blisters in the clearcoat on the hood and roof, headliner light fixture dangling by a wire, cracked headlight lenses, and blown stereo speakers. What a beater! Ran great, though... and [whisper on] got better gas mileage than the 8. [whisper off]

The Mazda dealer gave me $2500 for it -- WooHoo!:D

Well, everyone keeps saying that everyone else is not even close on how bad their last car was, so I'm not going to be any different. But I believe no one can compare to a '91 Ford Probe GT. Black paint (chipped and cracked all over the hood), blown speakers, wipers stand straight up when off, one headlight stands up half the time, torn driver seat, car leaks like a mofo when rains. Also, turbo is burned up and it has 207,000 miles on it. Bought it brand new off the showroom floor. Still own the car too and runs good even though there is no turbo! God bless I needed a new car. :D

The three RX-7s listed in my sig. All had over 280k miles. 1st one totaled in freak freeway accident (car in slow lane "park" under freeway bridge & cars couldn't see it until last second). 2nd one lent to brother as a favor and he blew it up (jerk!), then replaced it with a cheapo $900 rebuild (didn't know better). Spun out the GS last Feb in a really surreal downpour (went from 6am light rain and clear to couldn't see my headlight reflections) that made me recall that commercial jet that went down in a micro-downburst about 10 years back.

Was planning on restoring the GSX (kinda rare with the stock rear seats), but gave it away with the damaged GS after getting the 8. (The condo association police was giving me greif for storing in my carport.) Looked for a similar one at 7Stock 6, but nothing came close. Should have held on to the GSX, it was my favorite car (next to the '56 'vette that I had as a kid), but c'est la vi.

Ditto -- my "electric blue" PGT just turned 11 years old (all mine) this past Sunday. She's been fed nothing but Mobil 1 and premium gas -- still runs great at 180K miles. She's been a good ship, but I'm finally ready for something new. I'll probably be picking up an 8 within the next 3-6 months (maybe sooner, actually) -- depends on how soon I get confirmation on my next assignment from the Air Force. Not sure if I'll get rid of the PGT or keep it as a commuter...

BTW, I've noted actually quite a few 2nd-Gen PGT and MX6 owners on this site...

Will be replacing my from-new '97 MX-5 with the '8 when she finally arrives, still don't know when...

The only other car I've owned was a cheap little Suzuki off-roader. Near-indestructable and surprisingly good fun to drive but no good at corners. It was handed down to my younger brother, who promptly crashed it. Fortunately those things are built like tanks though, so he and his lady passenger were unharmed.

I had a Honda Integra Type R (DC2 - 1999) before.
There are still about 1000 of them in Australia... and about 300 RX 8 now and counting... I guess this time I am not in the exclusive class. But I try to look at it that way. 1994 Acura GS-R 4dr. Smooth 8,000 rpm engine, not much torque low down, but with fine 5-sp manual was crisper than my RX8 AT four-speed. Economical, dead reliable, and damn good sports sedan handling (but wild torque steer accelerating from start in the wet). With only 67K -- I commute by bike -- the only reason to part with it was the RX8's appeal.
