It's not news that reading the dipstick is a royal pain. I've got a new '07 with 2,040 miles on it, and I've put about 1.85 quarts into the engine so-far.

I've spent an hour searching, here is what I've found that sounds useful:

1. Remove and wipe, repeat 4 or 5 times before taking the reading.

2. Sandpaper the reading zone (where the dots are) crosswise, to give some "tooth" for the oil to cling to.

I would appreciate validation of the above techniques, especially #2 (or tell me it's BS before I do it)- I've been wiping the stick at least 3 times already, just learning on my own. Any other hints and tips on getting a precise read from the stick is very much appreciated!

Yup, did that and it helped some. Mainly because it removes the dark coating on the metal. It may help also if you rotate the stick--front to back--as you read it.

Three solutions:

1. Just tip the thing so the light reflects from it. It will be shinier where there's oil. No need to wipe it more than once before dipping it.

2. Drill some small holes at key positions along the measurement area. They'll make it easier to see what the level is. Some cars came with holes in the dipstick.

3. Don't change your oil for maybe 20,000 miles. The oil line on the dipstick will then be very easy to see.

Just take one of those brown restroom paper towels (or a Taco Bell napkin) and hold the stick to it but don't actually wipe it or move it with relation to the stick. The oil will saturate the paper, and you will see exactly how far it came up to on the stick.
