View Full Version : Switching from synthetic oil back to dino oil?
road1will 06-25-2007, 03:29 PM I know that mazda does not reccomend use of synthetic oil in their rotary motors. The previous owner of my 8 was using synthetic in my motor. It is at 33k miles right now.
Is it safe to switch back to dino oil at this point or should i stick to synth? In the past people have said that once you start using syn oil in a car it is best to stick with it, otherwise you risk leaky seals, etc.
Reccomendations?

in the past people have said ? I want to find out who so I can beat the shit out of him/her
You can switch between Mineral/Synthetic anyday, anytime. They work with each other.
and one more question, if it works for the previous owner, why dont you keep using it?
Mazda does not recommend the use of Synthetic Oil ? Mazda does not recommend the use of aftermarket parts as well. how come no one has an answer to that one ?
and my motor still works. just got 31K miles on it. 30K of them were Synthetic oil miles.
The "don't switch" warnings originated in the 70's. Early synthetics did not "swell" rubber seals in the same way that conventional oils do. Engines with high mileage on conventional oil would sometimes develop leaks when switched to synthetic, where previously "swollen" seals would subsequently "shrink". So, even under those conditions switching synthetic-to-conventional was ok. But in any case, the problem with the oil formulations was fixed back when the most popular wedding gift was fondue pots.

Relax! What if Lou Ferrigno said that? No need to curse or make silly threats.
It's ok to switch back to dino oil. Some folks will tell you to use a flushing oil first, like this guy... http://www.carbibles.com/engineoil_bible.html#flushing
Read the whole article too.

I cant hold my anger grrRRrrrrrr
Hudwa 06-26-2007, 11:46 PM Doesn't the fact that rotaries burn oil as a matter of course have an affect on the decision to use synthetic vs. mineral? Will the synthetic oil burn properly, or will it somehow damage the engine in the long term? Rotaries can be finicky with things that piston engines take for granted like this. Someone with more experience and tech know-how than me please respond...

Hudwa 06-28-2007, 12:19 AM Wow, that's quite a bit of information, I feel like passing the bar would be easier than coming up with a defensible opinion on the whole dino/synthetic question.:Eyecrazy:
swoope 06-28-2007, 12:22 AM yes,
