If this forum is representative of RX-8 owners, what can we deduce about them (us)?

1. Relish being different and/or not one of the masses.
2. Researches and considers pros and cons of almost any decision.
3. Willing to take risks on new technology.
4. Generally knowledgable about many topics (beyond cars).
5. Generally welcoming to new people.
6. Willing to share information/opinions with others.
7. Thirsty to know how things work.
8. Determined to be treated fairly, or else....
9. Creative in life (check out those screen names)
10. Willing to go to battle with trolls.

I miss any?

Wow, that's very insightful -- I never thought of that, but it fits!

(I happen to be both...) ;)

I completely agree. I've been an Apple/Macintosh lover for 19 years, and a rotorhead for 17. You get used to putting up with a lot of petty crap from ideologues and unbelievers; and your personal convictions are interpreted as smugness. Whatever.

This comparison was not missed by Slate (http://find.slate.msn.com/id/2087172/), either.

I have definitely drawn the correlation to Mac users on here, esp after the "Post your Rig" thread. But the one thing I don't get is, the OSs on the macs over time were supposed to be the epitome of user-friendliness, and really held a lot of things behind the scenes. Not like ripping it up on a command line in say, unix or DOS.

Now if all the guys with Mac rigs were running straight BeOS, I'd have to eat my boot :D

Not sure how this settled into a Mac discussion, but I have to complement Les Paul's analysis. I'd say you've hit the mark pretty close, at least from my experience, and klegg's "shockingly handsome" is the icing on the cake (except las chicas among us who are, of course, achingly beautiful. Even if they're posting purloined pix of fashion models as their avatar, it helps keep the fantasies alive.)

You know, I think I would love Macs if their whole setup wasn't so user freindly. I love how stable the OS is and how it is put together. I just can't stand the package it comes in.

You know, I think I've got some weird issues, because in spite of the fact I've been using a Mac at work for the past 4 years, it STILL confused the hell out of me, and I hate the colors it displays. My computer has OSX but still runs OS 9 for some programs in the background, and it drives me batty. At least I can find everything on my pc at home. No offense to the Mac lovers on here, but I *hate* my Mac at work. Everyone says it's so easy to figure out, but my computer and I get in a fight at least once a week. This morning it was having a fit about a Word file that EVERYONE ELSE in my department can apparently open, but my computer says it's corrupted. I just don't understand....

Elara, let me guess -- you're running Word 98 (an OS 9 app) under OS X? I tried that for a while and had all kinds of problems (everyone else at my company runs Windows). I finally gave in and purchased Office v.X (an OS X app) and all my problems with Word/Excel documents went away. In fact, the only "Classic" (OS 9) app I still use now is Photoshop, simply because I don't use it often enough to justify the expense of buying the new version.

I guess that's it- unfortunately, I don't have the power to get a new version, and our Mac Guy is limited by what he can convince his manager we need. So far, we haven't "needed" much :( And I'm NOT buying Word for a Mac just because my company is cheap. I don't like my job all THAT much.

That's one of the advantages of being in charge of IT -- *I* decide when a new piece of hardware or a software package is needed or not (not that I take advantage of it.)

I've been a Mac user since the 512K version wayyy back when; now totally in love with OS-X Jaguar on my flatscreen iMac and iBook.

And I'm in complete agreement with the initial thread-starting assessment of RX-8 owners. We think different, and would hate to be labeled just "one of the crowd". Any more, when a product becomes the choice of the majority, that's my cue to steer clear of it! I can't count how many G35Cs and 350Zs I see on the road.

<--- Notice that I don't own a retriever or dalmatian or whatever the "dog du jour" is, either. ;)

But of course, you are "one of the crowd" of the crowd that doesn't like to be labeled "one of the crowd" :D Sometimes different for the sake of different can get you into trouble, from personal experience.

I don't really care that much about the popularity of cars - if socialism came into power and it was decided that everybody had to own an RX-8 as their one car, and I didn't have to pay any more than my normal wages/taxes/what have you, crap...I wouldn't really care, the car would be just as fun performance-wise to drive to me :)

As is though, I still have to continue saving up my monies... :)

The title and this whole discussion just covers it beautifully.

I own an RX-8 and am modifying it ( fuel controller, ignition controller, suspension, etc.)

I use Linux!

Now if i could only get my hands on the source code for the ECU program..

I thought you were going to do the buyback? Well I am glad you kept it. it will be interesting to see what results you get. Hopefully you will get the speed youwant to go with the style.

Here's a few more that are apparent from our posts. RX-8 owners will generally:

1. Leave a generous tip.
2. Never use valet parking.
3. Put the seat down on the toilet.
4. Be right-handed.
5. Video (digital) tape the birth of their child.
6. Allow their dog in bed.
7. Say "goodnight" to their 8 before turning off the key.
8. Make stupid lists of stuff.....

Haven't bought one yet, just "sponging" up all the 8 info I can get and was glad I stumbled across this board.

I've been using Macs at work (graphic design/prepress) and at home since '89. I find it fascinating that it appears there are many other Mac users also drawn to this car. It's cool. Or maybe I'm just looking for reasons to further justify my purchase, heh.

Wahoo!

Yes, I decided to keep it.
My reasoning ran along the lines of:
"Every other car I like will cost me at least $6,000 more (Canadian).
What can i do to improve my RX-8 on a budget of $5,000?"

The answer was "A lot!"

So, I am now on a little project.

Great thread. Most of those points apply to me, in addition to the mac-user thing -- started out on an apple II from my dad, learned programming and s/w dev on a mac in 1984-85 in HS, and still running a tricked-out mac I got in 1995... definitely prefer it to the DOS machines (er, Windows machines) I use at work...

BTW, I get the impression the 8 is right up the middle of the "Gen X" demographic. Cars like the EVO and WRX appear to be more "Gen Y".

How many others we got on this board who were born from 1961-1979?

I would fall into that gen x thing, if 1961 is the cutoff.

Did you see the article in Wired magazine on the rX-8?

On the sark side, did you realise that Mazda was assesed the largest penalty by the Federeal Trace Commission in US history?

$5.25 million dolalrs for false advertising in their lease info.

What did Wired have to say about the '8?

For those too lazy to look, the lease thing dates back to 1997; the fine print was too fine in their ads. Like that is news.

Finally, 1958 for me. Glad I'm not the oldest fart on this forum.

Yikes... Well, I never liked or payed too much attention to leasing, anyway.

1968 for me, BTW... 1961-79 seems to be the most popular (among sociologists, I guess) year-grouping for "Gen-Xrs" -- it's by no menas the only grouping. Demographically and ideologically, I guess "Gen X" has been difficult for the sociologists to define (thus the name).
