Can you explain the noise with any more detail? What are the situations you hear it? Is is a metallic sound? A crunch/grind sound? What does a "knocking sound" sound like? When does it do it, etc?

The gearbox on this car is noisy as it's right under your elbow, but the noises should be smooth and mechanical sounding.

It sounds like there isn't enough lubrication in the gearbox to me. They do NOT all do this. My gear box has a whirring noise and that's about it. Otherwise it is very smooth in operation

There are TSBs concerning motor mounts in the car that can cause the gear box to bang around and that might not have been taken care of.

Check here at the TSBs and see if any of them might fit:

http://www.finishlineperformance.com/rx8/bulletins.html

This one in particular:

HESITATION / IDLE VIBRATION DUE TO CRACKED ENGINE MOUNT

There is also a Thermal shield recall that could cause the noises that you are hearing here:

2004 M/T Dynamic Damper Heat Shield Replacement Recall

It could also be that the previous owner beat the snot out of it, and you are looking at a new gear box.

Make sure that the above was taken care of and also make sure that your oil level is full in the gearbox since that traditionally causes chattering, but I'm betting that the problem is a broken motor mount listed under the TSB. Your car should still be under warranty. Also, the powertrain warranty on '04s were extended a year with the thermal damage recall, and if that hasn't been done it should be too.

If you want to find the TSB list, it is in the Tech section of the forum under the DIY subsection. Best of luck.

Sell It !

According to the dealer 'Its Normal'..
Mine was doing the same thing.
It was recalled for transmission noise, but mine still made noise .

Check on the web for all the major recalls for this car.

This is one of the reasons , I just traded my car in.

This came from http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/pr...ls/results.cfm

There are four recalls...the second one down is for transmission noise.

Some kind of insulator broke, that could cause fatal crash !!!

Do some research before posting !!!

You might want to research a "real" site before posting. First off, your link doesn't work. Second, here is a link to ALL the posted recalls and service bulletins...
http://www.finishlineperformance.com/rx8/bulletins.html

...the garbage you are spouting doesn't exist.
