View Full Version : ECU chips on ebay adding 20 HP?
RX8Lover 09-30-2003, 11:26 AM Has anyone seen these?

Obviously your gut says it's bogus!
o_town_racer 09-30-2003, 11:57 AM I found a link that explains what this "performance resistor" device does in detail at:
http://www.installuniversity.com/install_university/installu_articles/slp_atm/slp_atm_9.202000.htm
In short, it tricks your engine into thinking that the air entering the engine is colder than it actually is. This in not always a plus. It causes timing to be advanced, more fuel to be used (even poorer mileage) and increases the risk of knock. Once knock is detected....timing is retarded, etc., etc.
My advice....wait for the re-programmers. They re-program everything, not just the air intake temp, usually for a 20-25 HP gain across the rev range, an increase in torque, and usually a smoother curve. Believe me, they will have one out soon (Hypertech or Superchips).

RX-EVolved 09-30-2003, 03:20 PM BETTER OFF WITH A IGNITION CONTROL MODULE! DON'T DO IT!!!
THIS IS ALL IT IS... A SIMPLE RESISTROR, DIME A DOZEN!

There is no way in hell you will get 20-25hp gain across the rev range with ANY ECU (unless you are force fed; wrx, evo, etc).
Irish_in_a_RX8 09-30-2003, 08:10 PM These have been out on ebay for well over a year now, usually some kid trying to make a buck on a 5 cent resister.
Stay away.

OK Mr. Engineer....there is no way in hell. Thanks for your expert opion.
An engine re-programmer in combination with a low restriction intake and a free flowing exhaust can make that much of an improvement. No force feeding required. Will the RX-8 get that much of a boost? I could not say. Can and have other cars and/or trucks gained that much, yes they have, and there are dyno charts to back that up.
In other words, we will just have to wait and see.

IN COMBINATION is the key. All you said was ECU. You left out 2 very major components. Yes, I am smarter than you. Trust me. :p No, I am not kidding. ;)

Since you do not know me or anything about me, your stating that you are "smarter than me" is an ignorant statement. I would not say one way or the other without knowing anything about you. Are you ASE certified? Do you work for a speed shop? Are you a Mazda engineer?
As far as my reason for stating what I did....I do have friends that are engineers for Superchips and am only reporting on what they have accomplished through engine management CPU reprogramming on OTHER vehicles. During programming you specify what you have done to your engine (intake, exhaust, low temp thermostat, etc) and the program is customized to your setup. They have used my car ('99 Vette) in the past to develop these devices, so I do have a little experience to pull from.
Anyway, enough of this BS. Nobody can say because there isn't anything yet for the RX-8. I personally would be glad to see something soon and give it a whirl!

Red Devil 10-01-2003, 03:37 PM Just an observation...
Lee Chun,
I won't claim to have read all your posts, but I have read quite a few. Not all posts, but many, turn abrasive; with or without use of sarcasm and wit. Why do they always center around your superior intelligence, or why people should stop complaining about 238hp when they can't even drive that anyway?
People would be much more willing to entertain your comments if you would substantiate yourself, or not claim to have superior mental faculties to everyone else. Whether you are joking or not, many people appear to take offense to what you are writing.
I'm off my horse, sorry to everyone for having interrupted the thread.
