thebiggdaddy 06-12-2007, 11:10 PM good lookin out.
Stavesacre21 06-13-2007, 02:15 AM starting with 08 models, that's what your gonna be seeing on every car. And yes it is closer to the actual milage.
Rotary Rasp 06-13-2007, 02:40 AM 16 - 22
Yea, I believe that. I get around 17 mpg avg, but I have a lead foot.
Rotary Rasp 06-13-2007, 02:42 AM Aston Martin DB9 only got 13 avg.

edit: sorry that one is supercharged the normal one is 18 (15 23)
TALAN7 06-13-2007, 08:19 AM WOW! This is funny! Over the years the 8 has had its power rating drop 3 times, 1 due to new sae standards. Now, after years of people claiming they don't get the mileage that the car claims we see another drop, this time in mpg. Is there anything else about this car that can drop...other than the resale value?
What I'd really like to know is, Did every car see similar drops in mpg or did certain cars go up, stayed the same or see bigger drops than others due to the new sae standard? Particularly, did the rotary drop more than others after real world driving was taken into affect based on reving it higher. Was the old test done at such lo revs as to obtain a not so real world mpg?

Did you test drive your car before you bought it?
SmokeyTheBalrog 06-13-2007, 08:39 AM Um... yeah...
ALL cars saw drops with the new SAE standards. Even hybrids.
And again ALL cars on that site will see a MPG drop because they are modifying their tests.
EPA has changed the way it estimates MPG.
Starting in model year 2008, estimates will reflect the effects of
* Faster Speeds & Acceleration
* Air Conditioner Use
* Colder Outside Temperatures
The tests lower MPG estimates for most vehicles.
TALAN7 06-13-2007, 09:00 AM Did you test drive your car before you bought it?
What does a test drive have to do with mpg.? And, yeah I test drove it, and fell in love with it.
mac11 06-13-2007, 09:01 AM What does a test drive have to do with mpg.? And, yeah I test drove it, and fell in love with it.
If you test drove it you shouldn't be bitching about the "power adjustments". It doesn't have any less power than the day you drove it. They could stamp mine with 10HP as long as it still drives the same.
Gambit 06-13-2007, 09:04 AM that sounds pretty close, I usually get better city mileag though

First off you didn't answer my question! What does a test drive have to do with mpg?
And I only mentioned the many drops in ratings; power, mpg or otherwise was funny. I didn't BITCH about the power I only brought up the restating of ratings, so before you bitch you should fully comprehend what you read.

It is funny, because my car has not only not lost power, but it's gained it in significant quantities over the years :)
I think he meant to say that the actual mileage and power has not changed for this car, Doing even the slightest bit of research would have given you an accurate estimate on what you should expect for economy and power, regardless of the EPA tests (which as we all know, their testing methods were seriously flawed and did not accurately represent real world numbers)
mysql101 06-13-2007, 09:49 AM On a side note, the numbers for my other car* have dropped:
http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/calculatorCompareSideBySide.jsp?column=1&id=23067
As a result, I will be forced to sell it at a huge loss in order to regain an imaginary gain at the fuel pump.
*imaginary car.
Rems31 06-13-2007, 10:26 AM Since I'm from Canada we use L/100km's...so mine actually went UP!!!
pdxhak 06-13-2007, 10:49 AM I rarely get to stretch it legs for any length of time on the HWY but the city mileage seems spot on.
TheKDog 06-13-2007, 10:50 AM Makes me feel better. Now I don't have to worry that something is wrong with my car when I get only 16mpg.
r0tor 06-13-2007, 10:54 AM my 4 year average is 20mpg in my RX8 -shrug-
TALAN7 06-13-2007, 10:56 AM If I'm right the RX8 gets the same mileage as a Z06.
interesting...want better economy watch the RPMs

I never said anything about MPG on your test drive. I was specifically addressing you bitching about the power ratings dropping.

And I asked you what does a test drive have to do with mpg and you didn't answer the question, and how is my bringing up the power rating drops in conjunction with the mpg ratings drop bitching?
SmokeyTheBalrog 06-13-2007, 04:47 PM And I posted that this is NOT Rx-8 specific and is INDUSTRY wide. And yes it did and still does seem that you where/are bitching.
Not only bitch, but bitching about things taken out of context.
XDEEDUBBX 06-13-2007, 05:22 PM yea thats about right for me..
You would think the 350z would get better than 20mpg average.
N rider89 06-13-2007, 07:29 PM sounds about right. when i mix i get 18-19.
i like the new rating, bumps down those damn prius'
mac11 06-13-2007, 09:05 PM You would think the 350z would get better than 20mpg average.
Why would you think that? The power those motors make isnt free. And the cars are bloated pigs.
Cromax 06-13-2007, 10:12 PM I get 12L/100km on average ... which works out to be 19mpg ...
... I have been able to tip 9.7L/100k before which is more like 19.5mpg, if no 20mpg.
Sorry if my calculations are incorrect, I just worked it out in my head.
Spin9k 06-14-2007, 07:05 AM FINALLY - R.I.P. to all the frustrated MPG wining posts. As if it meant anything - now practically anyone will get the "official government mileage". Yea!!!

you can double check here...
http://www.calculateme.com/cGasMileage/LitersPer100kmtoMPG.htm
9.7L/100Km is about 24mpg.
MazdaMonkey 06-14-2007, 12:52 PM Cool site I didn't know the RX-8 had a 2 cylinder engine!
2005 Mazda RX-8
Manual (6 speed)
2 Cylinders
1.3 Liters
Premium Gasoline
The page for the MX-5 is dead on though. The New EPA MPG is exactly what I have had so far in the 2007 MX-5 6M: Low of 21, high of 28, average of 24

OOoooooo BURRRRRRRRRRRRNNNNNNNNN!
there's something i love about this car's faults. cant beat a camaro off the line? ok. crap-ass gas mileage? so what? reliability is shit? thanks for the warning! for every bonehead in a hot-shit "i have the loudest fastest ride EVER!" muscle-car douchebag, we have an 8 owner that knows the limitations of their car, and drives it/loves it REGARDLESS.
seeing "official" numbers makes me feel better, too. I average 16.5ish mpg city/hwy, and when i think im getting STELLAR mileage from a long highway trip, its at 17 and change. i never thought i'd see 20mpg, and uh... now i dont care!

FANTASTIC ! ! !
I HAVE FINALLY GOTTEN THE EPA HIGHWAY ESTIMATE ON MY FAITHFUL "04.
On my last run from Houston to Gulfport, I exercised remarkable (and boring!) restraint, held her to under 75, and measured 23.4 mpg. I was dreading having to slow her down even more on the next trip, but no---
I've finally seen her get the EPA estimate.

Drove just last week with three other RX-8s from Chicago to Michigan at about 85mph consistently...we all averaged 23-24mpg.
Icemark 06-14-2007, 07:32 PM hmm, see I thought the old ratings were correct, as even on winter gas I was getting around 20-21 in mixed hard driving.
Oh well, now everyone will be happy when they get better than the EPA ratings
tiggerlee 06-14-2007, 07:41 PM You all get better mpg than I do so quit bitchin.

rx8wannahave 06-15-2007, 08:17 PM LOL, I'm the 2nd one on the list...the FL guy with a lifetime average of 19.2mpg in stop and go driving, while not stuck in traffic that much at all.
Since then, I'm now driving like 70% highway and 30% highway and I'm getting like 21mpg. In my opinion the RX8 driving softly in the city in moderate traffic can hit 19mpg (flat land, and base 6spd) but normally I hit (with a lead foot that grows heavier every year) about 18.8mpg but here is my complaint.
There is NO WAY I've ever even come close to the 24mpg highway, the best I've done is about 21mpg and while I've never been on the highway at 75mph for a full tank I just don't see my 8 getting 24mpg honestly.
Easy_E1 06-15-2007, 08:36 PM Just a finished a tank and got 16.89 MPG.
Endless Rotaries 06-16-2007, 01:46 AM I seriously think i'm selling my 8
Starting a deep frying Fish and Chips place
Buying TDI Golf/Jetta, Diesel Chevy and going SVO Alternative fuel baby. That's how i'm running into this shit. I just can't stand it anymore.
Replace the RX8 with a LGT Limited and figure out how to make it do E50 or E85, since guys do it on the imprezas.

mycrowsquish 06-23-2007, 10:36 AM The new numbers bring down the highway a bit too much, but the city is probably closer to realistic.
I'm only getting 13mpg in suburban driving, but I only drive about 6 miles to/from work each day. Getting the car to operating temp must be a big part of that crappy mileage. However, I've gotten 22mpg on the highway doing 75-80mph. I'm sure I could do 24-25mpg if I slowed down to 65mph.
Shift points are also probably a big key in gas mileage. I read in other posts about what gear to use at 25mph, if I'm not trying to pass I'm up shifting quickly and will skip 2 or 3 gears most of the time - 1st, 2nd, 4th or 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th and now I'll do 1st, 3rd, 6th.
I wonder if a hybrid version of the RX8 would make sense. The electric motor would help in low-end torque and improve the terrible city gas mileage.
Stavesacre21 06-24-2007, 02:43 AM You all get better mpg than I do so quit bitchin.
AND THE TRUTH....SHALL SET YOU FREE!!!
Paul_in_DC 06-24-2007, 08:30 AM I get better than the new EPA estimates in both city and highway. My actual mileage is about halfway between the old and the new estimates.
ramathorne 06-24-2007, 08:56 AM I don't know how some of you possibly got 23 or 24 miles per gallon, even only on the highway and only using cruise control, but I managed to get 20 mpg on my tank last week. I live a mile from the highway and it was pretty much all highway. Ramathorne is always all highway. But I was so happy about seeing that big 20 I had to call my buddy with a v6 accord coupe. He then he put me in my place with his 24 mpg. Whatever, he drives an black egg.
AQA101 06-30-2007, 03:40 AM After more than 100'000 km with the car (daily driving, 25% city, 75 % jammed autobahn) I'd say the average mileage is 19.5 mpg. You can get slightly better results if you really try (I managed 23.5 under above circumstances) and of course much worse (9.5 is possible if you race the car full force).
Razz1 06-30-2007, 08:24 PM Your not driving fast enough if you only get 9.5 MPG on the track.
AQA101 07-03-2007, 11:44 AM I don't drive track - I drive Autobahn. ;)
Razz1 07-05-2007, 09:50 PM And I posted that this is NOT Rx-8 specific and is INDUSTRY wide. And yes it did and still does seem that you where/are bitching.
Not only bitch, but bitching about things taken out of context.
You forgot this is the biggest cry baby site on the internet.
ranmcc 07-06-2007, 07:17 AM you kids play nice in the sandbox.... now now...
Stavesacre21 07-06-2007, 11:00 PM and this thread has officially reached the point of no return.
ShadowX 07-22-2007, 05:45 PM Not so sure how accurate that site is...I get a solid 30mpg in my S2000 every time I fill it, around 26-27 if I use the A/C. That's mostly highway due to my daily commute, but far more than the 20mpg that site claims.
I'd take their numbers with a grain of salt.
DaGnome 07-24-2007, 09:04 PM I've been tracking EVERY fill up since I got my '05... I've gotten 17.9 mgp exactly, and i drive about 45 miles each day in Miami traffic :) High has been about 25 mpg once, and as low as 14mpg.
So I'd say that site is right on :)
fobjr101 07-24-2007, 11:25 PM Least now I know I'm not getting low mpg for this car compared to others.
Altair 8 07-25-2007, 12:47 PM might as well use up all the natural resources while we can and still have fun :)
Hepcat1920 07-26-2007, 04:45 PM I get between just shy of 18mpg to just shy of 20mpg depending on weather, traffic, driving style for that tank of gas. Which is right where the window sticker stated.
It is also about 2mpg more than I used to get in my '88 RX-7, so I guess I am happy because it is an improvement from my old car!
rotary magic 10-25-2011, 08:30 PM I now avg 20mpg. Got 22mpg last week driving from Ga to Tx. Noticed an improvement after changing to 10w40. 105,000 on the odometer.
altspace 10-26-2011, 05:43 AM Holy thread bump!
FungsterRacing 11-05-2011, 12:47 PM No doubt for thread bump! Lol. But to add in, I get better mileage in city when in 2nd gear than I do in any other gear :)
bryan4140 11-05-2011, 05:42 PM driveing from PA to WI i averaged 23mpg at about 75mph. daily basis i commute 25 miles each way, driveing 70% hwy 30% city and average 19.5mpg. i drive pretty average with a couple spirited on ramp excels redlineing 1st and 2nd(usualy once some times twice a day(cant resits)).
77mjd 11-08-2011, 06:03 PM I think Mazda already knows that a legit 28-30mpg hwy will be necessary for the next rotary car...otherwise it won't sell or stay in the range of the tree hugger rules for it's entire production run.
WhiteDealershipRice 11-08-2011, 06:48 PM Zombie thread averages 16.5 MPG (I calculate it on evry fill-up)
santarosarx8 05-12-2012, 12:32 AM I got 24 mpg once on flat highway, starting with a warm engine driving from gas station to gas station. Otherwise, 19 mpg. Once in a while, I drive that back road at 4 to 6K rpm. Doesn't hurt mileage a bit. I think that it is designed to be ok at the higher rpms, and fair everwhere else.
I got a V8 cadillac for the mileage, it gets about 21 mpg.
pistonhater 05-13-2012, 07:12 AM yeah...yeah...somebody always seems to get the most MPG, the best price on a car, the smartest son/daughter in school, the cheapest car insurance, the lowest interest car loan, etc.
but nobody would be willing to admit the truth:(
Bladecutter 05-13-2012, 11:30 AM but nobody would be willing to admit the truth:(
I'll admit it.
Lyndon B Johnson is the one who assassinated John F Kennedy.
There, now I feel so much better.

Damnit.
Mod, please delete.
BC.
RIWWP 05-13-2012, 06:21 PM While rather a beaten to death topic in a 5 year old resurrected thread, there isn't much of a direct reason to delete it.
That being said:
Anyone else replying, take a look at the thread date. If you want to contribute your personal mileage experience feel free.
However, note that no one will really care, since you only have 3 possibilities:
1) Your mileage is too good and no one will believe you
2) Your mileage is normal and no one will bother commenting
3) Your mileage is terrible and people will tell you to get your car fixed (coils, plugs, wires, O2 sensors, compression, MAF, air filter, etc...)
So please, just let the thread fade.
