what do these look like on your car during the day?

I have blue on a Ti-gray car. I would say that in bright sunshine, you aren't really going to see much of anything except for maybe some color where it is bouncing off the door. Besides that.............you really aren't going to see much in daylight.

Oh........so you just want a pic showing how well they fit?
If you look under your side view mirrors, you will see where they would go and it's fits pretty flush and pretty tight, so all you are gonna see if a clear piece of plastic sort of in a triangular shape.......and that's only if you get down there and look. I'll search and see if I can find any, but is that what your asking for?

Here's one with the lights on, but not at night. These are not RR's exact version, but very, very close.

I have issues with the clear plastic part which is causing a bit more of a delay. Also, I haven't been able to work on it nor respond to PMs until now because my grandfather (86) is in the hospital and possibly diagnosed with cancer... we're waiting to hear from the doctor/tests right now.

I'm making the last part over again to finish and ship the patiently waiting people with orders. The part I'm remaking is the clear part where the light shines in the picture above. You can pay, if you like.

Uhhh....I actually created subdirectories for all those online manuals that could be downloaded, and then subdirectories of all stuff I have installed. If the instructions weren't electronic, then I scanned them in. I haven't caught all the way up and still have some in hard copy, but eventually I'll scan them all in.

Hey guys, I said I would ship them out on the 21st but I've been absent-minded on everything going on around me with school, work, and life. I'm very sorry about that on how it's affected these things to be shipped out to you.

Most of them are in the boxes and ready to be shipped when I get home tonight. The ones that I haven't completely packed up are the orders with RED leds. I'm awaiting my shipment of LEDs to come in so I can quickly pack those up and ship them out to you. I'll be sending each of you guys an e-mail and PM tomorrow when they're in the possession of the Post Office.

How can I modify Derwankle puddle lights (I bought them but have not yet installed them, but plan to very soon) by using the 194 lights that are used for the puddle lights in this thread? I bought the 194 lights (both white and red because I haven't decided which ones to use yet) but I see that the Derwankle lights don't appear to have sockets so you can switch out those lights for any other type of light. Has anyone tried to modify their Derwankle lights with these 194 lights? :)

Jedi54
05-26-2008, 07:11 PM
you don't need to modify anything on Derwankle's lights to run 194's. I've had his puddle lights for years and have always used 194 LED's.

ProfDean
05-27-2008, 07:39 AM
Thanks Jedi for the info. I'll have to take a closer look at my Derwankle lights. I thought that they were embedded in plastic and it didn't look like they would come out easily. I guess I should have tried to twist or pull on them. The 194 lights have a cylindrical base which I am hoping will just fit into the Derwankle light sockets. I bought the 194 lights that were described in this thread.

ProfDean
05-29-2008, 05:18 AM
OK, I've got it now! I pulled the blue lights out of my Derwankle puddle lights and saw that their base, so I looked at the 194 lights again and realized that the "cylindrical base" I thought I was looking at was the TOP of the bulb and the other end was the base. Duh! Anyway, I replaced the blue lights with my 194 lights and it looks like I am ready to install them now. [Hopefully, I won't look at the instructions upside down!]

How long did they take to install? I'm not very skilled in this kind of thing, but I'll be taking vacation time from work pretty soon and I was hoping to get these installed along with Rotary Rasp's footwell LEDs.. so at least I'll have plenty of time to work on them!! :)

sorry if this is to off topic.

I ordered them in red on my TiG, as I have stuck w/ red as my accent color. However, I think the blue looks really sharp w/ gray and I am sure the amber would look okay. Personally, I think it is hard to mess up accent colors on a gray car as long as you don't go all rainbow colored...... not that there is anything wrong w/ that.lol

Evil n00b invaders... Wasn't trying to be a n00b, I just didn't see how the LEDs are wired in. If they were a direct wire it would have been a lot more hassle. Since they are just drop in replacements it is no big deal.

I didn't mean to call YOU a n00b, just the noobs that sign up every day and start threads like, "which exhaust is BEST" :banghead:

Anyway, if the LED's had been directly wired in, Shaz wouldn't have made hardly any sales at all..........just for the record. :)
Now you know they are just drop in bulbs, so you can use whatever as long as it they are 194's, not too big in size, and don't melt the actual plastic lens!

Bogus................it does change how fast they fade depending on how many locations on the same circuit you have changed.

yup, still fade.

Thanks guys...I was hoping to retain that effect. Im not well versed in the properties of LEDs vs. bulbs. What can I expect if I was to change all the fading bulbs to LEDs, with the addition of the puddle lights? Does the fade speed up or slow down? How would brightness be effected, if at all? Basically, are there any drawbacks to doing this?

laythor
06-25-2008, 08:10 PM
only drawback is that you can get some flicker in LEDs unless you but a voltage regulator on the line.

Im aware of the fast blinking when you replace the turn signals w/o using voltage regulators. Would the slow fading ones be effected the same way? Is there any concern with the bulbs that dont blink or flash?

Razz1
06-25-2008, 09:41 PM
Voltage regulator?? I heard resistors stop that problemin turn signals

laythor
06-25-2008, 10:22 PM
i meant resistor

the fast blinking is caused by the difference is current a LED draws then stock bulb.. so your car thinks the turn signal is burnt out when it's not. The flickering in other applications is a different issue

Ok, so if Im understanding you correctly, I could still have flickering with LEDs in non blinking locations....such as the side markers or position lights up front?

yep. doesnt happen to everyone and usually means you'll need a resistor in the line. Lots of the led sites sell them. I'm currently running my parking lights and all interior lights on LED without any flicker and I'm NOT using any resistors.

Yep, I agree you may or may not have it and I am also one that has no noticable flicker without any resistors.
BTW..........some LED's come with the resistor already there, but most do not. Also, watch out for that third brake light if you decide to try and change that to LED, if I remember right................it is notorious for causing issues with the ABS/DCS circuit.

I guess Ill start with the side markers and go from there. Also makes troubleshooting easier if I swap them out in stages, as apposed to all at once. Thanks guys.

I have Polag Hyper-red Rear Turn signal lights because LED turn signal lights did not work. It blinked twice as fast as normal, which became completely annoying after a while. If using the resistors isn't your thing, just go with other high-performance lights that are not the LED lights.

how difficult is the install for these lights?

what does it require you to remove/modify?

laythor
07-31-2008, 03:25 PM
It's very easy to install. You will end up removing the door panels and the side mirrors. Total install is under an hour, less if you've removed a door panel before.

Since he already provided the link to the instructions up above, there is no harm in sharing the link. Go here http://rx8.becomeanidiot.com/puddlelights.pdf and see how difficult you think it will be. If you have any mechanical ability at all it should be a breeze. The electrical part is even easier and you're not likely to break anything with the electrical portion. :)

Just installed mine. I'm getting ready to go out for a drive and see how they look at night. Question...has anyone had any problems with shorting out due to water getting to the contacts or bulb somehow? Just curious to see if any one has had any problems yet.

The install was relatively easy except for the darn door panel clips. After I got the door panel off some of them were still on the door and one in the same spot on both doors cracked (still usable though). Would help if you can get a hold of a few extra of these just in case. Other than that pretty simple.

Thanks Shaz!!!! :)

I wanted to know if I can install these lights on other cars. I love the lights so much that I want to install them in my wife's Mercedes. I am thinking about getting the blue light set.

I have all red Led interior lights including RR's footwell lights, but I feel that the puddle lights are the coolest. When it's dark outside and I let all lights come on, more people have complimented on the puddle lights than anything else.

Might be able to. I was actually thinking about creating a modified version for cars that don't have the housing. I'll keep you posted.

Have had these in for about a year and they look and work just as nicely as they did when I first put them in. If you just want the convenience of being able to see the ground around your car at night.. go white. If you're looking to carry a color scheme to the outside... pic a color.

Just a quick question, when you open the door, as the door swings out does it not block the light from shining onto where you are going to step? Or is there enough light that the area still gets lit up?

Mazurfer
02-27-2009, 06:26 PM
I'd say if you did white, it would probably do a little bit. I have blue and to be honest, it doesn't light up the area you describe due to the reason you describe. Looks good as you walk up and hit your remote unlock though as they come on at that time.........and they door is obviously shut.

The Reverend
02-27-2009, 09:22 PM
Ahh yes when walking up to it I forgot about that. To be honest I don't really care if they light up any puddles or not they look so darn cool I will probably be getting them soon.
