View Full Version : Custom LED Puddle Lights! db_8 05-01-2008, 05:36 PM just got my shipping notification. thanks shaz! gsd8702 05-01-2008, 06:18 PM nice. im interested in the ambers. Mazurfer 05-01-2008, 07:36 PM what do these look like on your car during the day? I have blue on a Ti-gray car. I would say that in bright sunshine, you aren't really going to see much of anything except for maybe some color where it is bouncing off the door. Besides that.............you really aren't going to see much in daylight. Dave MidLife8 05-06-2008, 05:28 PM Any news on my order? MidLife8 Thanks. 04wb8 05-07-2008, 08:15 AM i put my order in 2 days ago.any information on my order?04wb8 Dremd911 05-07-2008, 08:58 AM Not what i meant about what it looks like during the day, does anyone have a picture of these installed?...besides night shots Mazurfer 05-07-2008, 02:33 PM Oh........so you just want a pic showing how well they fit? If you look under your side view mirrors, you will see where they would go and it's fits pretty flush and pretty tight, so all you are gonna see if a clear piece of plastic sort of in a triangular shape.......and that's only if you get down there and look. I'll search and see if I can find any, but is that what your asking for? Here's one with the lights on, but not at night. These are not RR's exact version, but very, very close. http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d37/Jedi54/fd908296.jpg Dremd911 05-07-2008, 02:38 PM that is what i was looking for...looks nice but now is not the time for me since someone tried jacking my 8 and now i have a $300 deductable to pay Riken 05-09-2008, 09:56 AM Ok so can I still order a kit? And whats the time frame on shipping? shazbot28 05-09-2008, 10:34 AM I have issues with the clear plastic part which is causing a bit more of a delay. Also, I haven't been able to work on it nor respond to PMs until now because my grandfather (86) is in the hospital and possibly diagnosed with cancer... we're waiting to hear from the doctor/tests right now. Also, I haven't been able to work on it nor respond to PMs until now because my grandfather (86) is in the hospital and possibly diagnosed with cancer... we're waiting to hear from the doctor/tests right now. ok sorry to hear that. I just lost a uncle 3 month ago because of cancer. So you are making more? Do I pay now? shazbot28 05-09-2008, 01:30 PM ok sorry to hear that. I just lost a uncle 3 month ago because of cancer. So you are making more? Do I pay now? I'm making the last part over again to finish and ship the patiently waiting people with orders. The part I'm remaking is the clear part where the light shines in the picture above. You can pay, if you like. Riken 05-09-2008, 02:25 PM So time frame is about 1 week? or more? 04wb8 05-09-2008, 08:25 PM yeah my gma was diagnosed with cancer on my 17th birthday and they said she only had 6 months to live that was january 24th,2007. but now she just had a stroke and she told my mom that she isnt going to make it much longer. swoope 05-12-2008, 12:28 AM does anyone here have the instructions in pdf they can email me.. have someone in aus, that is looking for some help.. i dont have the file anymore as i printed it.. and the derwankel links are gone. if so send me a pm for my email address. btw, mazsurfer. want to help me put a set in? i will drive and supply lunch or dinner at longdoggers!!! beers  Jedi54 05-12-2008, 12:29 AM Swoope: gimme a few minutes, I got ya covered. swoope 05-12-2008, 12:32 AM Swoope: gimme a few minutes, I got ya covered. my email is screen name @gmail.com. and thanks. after reading all this i almost pmed you direct with out the post.. funny i have a set of derwankels that are just sitting.. if you put leds in do they still dim, or just on and off? beers  Jedi54 05-12-2008, 12:34 AM damn swoope, thought I had it on this computer. Hi power from vleds, work great Mazurfer 05-12-2008, 03:33 PM I'm sure I have them Scott, but I'm at work right now. You'll have to check later this evening....................I'll see if I have on this computer, but I don't think I do. Hey.............I found them on this machine also, so they are on the way to you at your E-mail addy. Also, I can help you put them in, but with my broken heel..........I won't be doing a lot of moving around. But..............since some of it is done off the car, I can do that part! Dave Mazurfer 05-12-2008, 03:42 PM Check your Gmail Swoope..............they are on the way! I need to look at home and see if I have others, but I think these are the correct ones. Look back here for conformation later or check your gmail later on this evening for an update. Dave Jedi54 05-12-2008, 05:09 PM mazurfer to the rescue! shazbot28 05-12-2008, 07:54 PM Here's for future ref: I have Der's on my server: http://rx8.becomeanidiot.com/puddlelights.pdf Mazurfer 05-12-2008, 08:24 PM Cool.....if you ever lose it for some reason, give a shout as I have it saved several places on at least two machines. Uhhh....I actually created subdirectories for all those online manuals that could be downloaded, and then subdirectories of all stuff I have installed. If the instructions weren't electronic, then I scanned them in. I haven't caught all the way up and still have some in hard copy, but eventually I'll scan them all in. Dave Mazurfer 05-13-2008, 06:54 PM Those were the correct ones..................did you get them Scott? I did send them from my work E-mail, so it might look weird coming from some company. Anyway, if you didn't get them, then Shaz provided a link below. Dave RX8Carnage 05-14-2008, 09:58 PM Paypal sent let me know you got it and estimated time of shipping shazbot28 05-16-2008, 02:47 PM I just finished the bottom part of the mold and will be going home tonight to take a look at it. I expect to be shipping these out in the next day or two. Sweet. I've got the weeked after Memorial free to put these in. Woot Puddlely Goodness! Thanks Shaz. Hope your Grandfather gets better. shazbot28 05-20-2008, 11:57 AM Update: Shipping tomorrow. They're all drying/hardening right now at my house and will be packing them up tonight for shipment tomorrow. Thanks for your patience. shazbot28 05-23-2008, 03:13 PM Hey guys, I said I would ship them out on the 21st but I've been absent-minded on everything going on around me with school, work, and life. I'm very sorry about that on how it's affected these things to be shipped out to you. Most of them are in the boxes and ready to be shipped when I get home tonight. The ones that I haven't completely packed up are the orders with RED leds. I'm awaiting my shipment of LEDs to come in so I can quickly pack those up and ship them out to you. I'll be sending each of you guys an e-mail and PM tomorrow when they're in the possession of the Post Office. Jedi54 05-23-2008, 03:27 PM ^^^ stop partying so much, your b-day isn't till this weekend. I'm sure they'll be worth the wait. :) RK 05-23-2008, 04:42 PM ^ +1 Hope they make it next weekend. If not guess it'll give me something to do the weekend after and I'll have to occupy myself with stripping/repainting my bathroom instead. No where NEAR as much fun. ;) RX8Carnage 05-24-2008, 06:30 PM Were you able to send them yet ProfDean 05-26-2008, 04:52 PM How can I modify Derwankle puddle lights (I bought them but have not yet installed them, but plan to very soon) by using the 194 lights that are used for the puddle lights in this thread? I bought the 194 lights (both white and red because I haven't decided which ones to use yet) but I see that the Derwankle lights don't appear to have sockets so you can switch out those lights for any other type of light. Has anyone tried to modify their Derwankle lights with these 194 lights? :) Jedi54 05-26-2008, 07:11 PM you don't need to modify anything on Derwankle's lights to run 194's. I've had his puddle lights for years and have always used 194 LED's. ProfDean 05-27-2008, 07:39 AM Thanks Jedi for the info. I'll have to take a closer look at my Derwankle lights. I thought that they were embedded in plastic and it didn't look like they would come out easily. I guess I should have tried to twist or pull on them. The 194 lights have a cylindrical base which I am hoping will just fit into the Derwankle light sockets. I bought the 194 lights that were described in this thread. ProfDean 05-29-2008, 05:18 AM OK, I've got it now! I pulled the blue lights out of my Derwankle puddle lights and saw that their base, so I looked at the 194 lights again and realized that the "cylindrical base" I thought I was looking at was the TOP of the bulb and the other end was the base. Duh! Anyway, I replaced the blue lights with my 194 lights and it looks like I am ready to install them now. [Hopefully, I won't look at the instructions upside down!] RK 05-29-2008, 08:23 AM Still no tracking info. Something going on Shaz? shazbot28 05-29-2008, 08:10 PM Shipped today (5/29): 1. How long did they take to install? I'm not very skilled in this kind of thing, but I'll be taking vacation time from work pretty soon and I was hoping to get these installed along with Rotary Rasp's footwell LEDs.. so at least I'll have plenty of time to work on them!! :) Also, do you happen to have any pics with the blue? My interior lights are blue LEDs and naturally I'd like to match. 04wb8 06-01-2008, 11:22 PM i started at 8 this morning and the first side, driver side took around 45 minutes and the passenger side was a breeze because i knew what i was doing. i didnt take pics yet but the blues do match well. i have blue interior leds as well. i am very please with this mod lopezian2004 06-01-2008, 11:45 PM i started at 8 this morning and the first side, driver side took around 45 minutes and the passenger side was a breeze because i knew what i was doing. i didnt take pics yet but the blues do match well. i have blue interior leds as well. i am very please with this mod Sweet man i'm really looking forward to getting mine in! I kinda want to know what color you went with, I'm kinda drawn to the amber lights for the outside and possibly seeing how amber and blue look together on the inside...... sorry if this is to off topic. rx8speeddmon 06-03-2008, 01:58 AM I ordered them in red on my TiG, as I have stuck w/ red as my accent color. However, I think the blue looks really sharp w/ gray and I am sure the amber would look okay. Personally, I think it is hard to mess up accent colors on a gray car as long as you don't go all rainbow colored...... not that there is anything wrong w/ that.lol laythor 06-03-2008, 04:58 AM does anyone that has bought these have a galaxy gray? Since they are just drop in replacements it is no big deal. Mazurfer 06-24-2008, 03:13 PM Yes he did..............he meant to call you a Noob! Anyway, if the LED's had been directly wired in, Shaz wouldn't have made hardly any sales at all..........just for the record. :) Now you know they are just drop in bulbs, so you can use whatever as long as it they are 194's, not too big in size, and don't melt the actual plastic lens! laythor 06-24-2008, 03:16 PM I didn't mean to call YOU a n00b, just the noobs that sign up every day and start threads like, "which exhaust is BEST" :banghead: If they're similar to my Derwankle kit (which they should be), the bulbs are drop in. that's how old Jedi is. Thanks guys...I was hoping to retain that effect. Im not well versed in the properties of LEDs vs. bulbs. What can I expect if I was to change all the fading bulbs to LEDs, with the addition of the puddle lights? Does the fade speed up or slow down? How would brightness be effected, if at all? Basically, are there any drawbacks to doing this? laythor 06-25-2008, 08:10 PM only drawback is that you can get some flicker in LEDs unless you but a voltage regulator on the line. 1stRotaRy 06-25-2008, 08:22 PM only drawback is that you can get some flicker in LEDs unless you but a voltage regulator on the line. Lots of the led sites sell them. I'm currently running my parking lights and all interior lights on LED without any flicker and I'm NOT using any resistors. Mazurfer 07-01-2008, 08:12 AM Yep, I agree you may or may not have it and I am also one that has no noticable flicker without any resistors. BTW..........some LED's come with the resistor already there, but most do not. Also, watch out for that third brake light if you decide to try and change that to LED, if I remember right................it is notorious for causing issues with the ABS/DCS circuit. Shipping tomorrow. \\Konig\\ 07-31-2008, 12:34 PM how difficult is the install for these lights? what does it require you to remove/modify? laythor 07-31-2008, 03:25 PM It's very easy to install. You will end up removing the door panels and the side mirrors. Total install is under an hour, less if you've removed a door panel before. Mazurfer 07-31-2008, 06:28 PM Since he already provided the link to the instructions up above, there is no harm in sharing the link. Go here http://rx8.becomeanidiot.com/puddlelights.pdf and see how difficult you think it will be. If you have any mechanical ability at all it should be a breeze. The electrical part is even easier and you're not likely to break anything with the electrical portion. :) V1.0 07-31-2008, 06:59 PM Making the batch tonight and will have a handful of extras for near future orders. V1.0 08-09-2008, 07:59 PM Just installed mine. I'm getting ready to go out for a drive and see how they look at night. Question...has anyone had any problems with shorting out due to water getting to the contacts or bulb somehow? Just curious to see if any one has had any problems yet. The install was relatively easy except for the darn door panel clips. After I got the door panel off some of them were still on the door and one in the same spot on both doors cracked (still usable though). Would help if you can get a hold of a few extra of these just in case. Other than that pretty simple. Thanks Shaz!!!! :) snipaz2420 08-09-2008, 08:03 PM i've had mine in since shaz basically released them(december) and i have had no problems what so ever. still a very happy customer! V1.0 08-10-2008, 01:56 PM ^ Thanks, I was just curious. I usually have no where to go at night but now I want to drive somewhere just so I can see and show off the cool lights. LOL Mazurfer 08-16-2008, 06:05 PM Yep, had mine in since December and no issues. I'd venture to say that it rains alot more down here in the swamp but you got a lot more ice and snow! Those damn door clips are a pain in the ass aren't they! :banghead: 07rx8gtblack 09-07-2008, 11:47 AM I wanted to know if I can install these lights on other cars. I love the lights so much that I want to install them in my wife's Mercedes. I am thinking about getting the blue light set. I have all red Led interior lights including RR's footwell lights, but I feel that the puddle lights are the coolest. When it's dark outside and I let all lights come on, more people have complimented on the puddle lights than anything else. shazbot28 09-09-2008, 02:25 PM I wanted to know if I can install these lights on other cars. I love the lights so much that I want to install them in my wife's Mercedes. Might be able to. I was actually thinking about creating a modified version for cars that don't have the housing. Kazemo 02-27-2009, 05:49 AM I really really want to get this stuff!! Is there anybody who can explain specific about this?? Help me!! The Reverend 02-27-2009, 12:51 PM Just a quick question, when you open the door, as the door swings out does it not block the light from shining onto where you are going to step? Or is there enough light that the area still gets lit up? Mazurfer 02-27-2009, 06:26 PM I'd say if you did white, it would probably do a little bit. I have blue and to be honest, it doesn't light up the area you describe due to the reason you describe. Looks good as you walk up and hit your remote unlock though as they come on at that time.........and they door is obviously shut. The Reverend 02-27-2009, 09:22 PM Ahh yes when walking up to it I forgot about that. To be honest I don't really care if they light up any puddles or not they look so darn cool I will probably be getting them soon. always.anthony 03-08-2009, 07:13 PM could i get black led's somehow? I wanted a little better match with all my other V-LED's, so I swapped the LED's in the puddle lights with the same blue I was already using from V-LED's.
