View Full Version : Painted Headlight housing
nolanrob123 06-05-2007, 09:24 AM I was thinking of painting the black portion of the headlight VR to match my car. Has anyone done that so far or can anybody photoshop that? I think it would look pretty nice. Ideas? Comments? Suggestions? I'm open for them all, thanks. :)
Jedi54 06-05-2007, 01:28 PM a la C6 / Ferrari??
hmm, that might look interesting. You're probably going to have to cut open the headlight housings and you'll need to find a way to seal it properly to avoid moisture.
XDEEDUBBX 06-05-2007, 01:31 PM like jedi said, it will be hard to open up..i dont even think baking it will open. rotary rasp opened up his rear lights and he had to hack at them to open them up..haha good luck
Chris 06-05-2007, 01:37 PM Yeah GOOD LUCK with that one but I am interested to see how it would look

I prefer the term a la Ferrari ;). I work in the auto industry so I have access to the tools and sealant but I would still like opinions/photoshop to see about how it would look before I go through with the operation and it is too late to turn back :banghead: Thanks for the input guys and gals. I am going to "try" to photoshop to see some reactions.
chickenwafer 06-05-2007, 01:52 PM you can open them by baking them to release the sealant and then paint the insides then reseal them back together. Good luck.
NgoRX8 06-05-2007, 01:54 PM good luck. i always wanted to open up the headlights and paint the housing, but never heard of anyone being able to open it up.
Chris 06-05-2007, 01:56 PM look at a black car:dunno: cuz the housing is black anyway might give you some sort of idea.... its a stretch, work with me here
AustinSBR 06-05-2007, 02:22 PM Please post up some pics if/when you get finished. I have a friend that did that on his Titan and it looks great. Its a fairly inexpensive mod that might look really good..
Yeah do it , do it ,do it! I was thinking on doing it but didnt have the balls for it , or the wallet >_>...wow no balls or wallet what a worthless man i am lol.

I went with your idea since my photoshop looked like something my g/f's kindergarden students would draw. It looks very nice so as soon as I finish with the tail lights I will go ahead and open them up and get them painted. There is a chemical that we use that actually eats the bonding type of enzymes or whatever in the glue so when it is applied to the headlight around the bead it gets very goey, almost like it was baked without the hazards of baking it. It is just messy and requires a little more cleaning, but is well worth it in my opinion. I will keep you guys updated with the progress.
scarroll 06-06-2007, 10:11 AM Does this help give you a visual idea?
chrism 06-06-2007, 10:44 AM oooh i like that
scarroll 06-06-2007, 10:48 AM I does have a nice look to it,
I was thinking that it would be kind of difficult to
mask all of the non black pieces off for painting though...
But it got me thinking, I drive a sunlight silver, What would it look like if
I just shot the entire inside with sl silver. If I get hold of a spare headlamp,
I might just try it.
RA-Eight 06-06-2007, 12:17 PM I think it'll look good. Let's hope the paint matches.
Bad_Bob 06-06-2007, 12:40 PM Does this help give you a visual idea?
That is SWEET.... Nice job..

Damn you do a great job at photoshop! Very nice. It looks great! What I am going to do is buy a used headlight from greanleaf, take it apart and start the project. I never use my brights so I think I will use some extra projectors and plastic work and have the dual look. I can't wait to get the freaking time though. I am still working on my tail lights with the led kit I got from Rodger. I just don't have a whole lot of spare time and it has been raining a lot here causing a lot of moisture.
nolanrob123 06-06-2007, 03:12 PM Much credit to scarroll for his picture so I did a little cut and paste to see what it would look like with the dual projectors. What do you think?
Jedi54 06-06-2007, 03:16 PM looks a little too busy for me
cornrowdpantha 06-06-2007, 03:18 PM I like it.... It's certainly different. I'd say do it
Throwdown 06-06-2007, 03:26 PM It's definitely a very good and original idea. I'm eager to see how this turns out. Perhaps do it to my winning blue 8 as well.
nolanrob123 06-06-2007, 03:57 PM I am having a hell of a time finding any used ones or broken ones around where I live at the wrecking yards. Anyone have any to donate for the cause? I will pay for them too.
NgoRX8 06-06-2007, 04:13 PM i wish our lights were bi-xenon.
MazdaJeff 06-06-2007, 05:11 PM That is pretty sweet.
lesper4 06-07-2007, 01:14 AM that is pretty cool looking kind of like the new vetts. with the dual projector it starts to look like a mazda 6
cornrowdpantha 06-07-2007, 12:09 PM While it may be sacrilegious to say such a thing, I actually prefer the Mazda 6 headlights to those on the 8... Maybe I'm strange...
altspace 06-07-2007, 05:34 PM I love the 8 lights just the way they are. Perfection.
Targatheory 06-11-2007, 12:42 AM Any one know how to remove the headlights cover? I wanna polish the inside to get ride of the cloudy film. And I'm sure some epoxy available at Home Depot could be used to put em back together right.
Fortunate Few 06-11-2007, 03:03 PM that looks really good. it probably wouldnt look good on a black or gray car.
Zero_Rotary 06-17-2007, 12:39 AM nolanrob123 ... when u r done... it would be very helpful o post a diy to open n re seal the head light ? :wiggle:
BigOLundh 06-17-2007, 01:12 AM i wish our lights were bi-xenon.i bet thats not hte only thing you wish was bi.
LOL - KEEEDING!!
BigOLundh 06-17-2007, 01:13 AM i think itll be better if u put them white, with gold stars, and glitter. DO IT!!!
oh and flourescent stripes.
LiL BenNy 06-17-2007, 11:42 PM dont like them in color particularly.. but i dont think they would look bad if they were painted black.... yum? anyone wanna do a PS of it painted black on a blue carr?
4 years to Supercharge 06-18-2007, 12:49 AM The headlights can be opened by baking them the tails have not been opened via baking though after multiple attempts. :(
I like the double xenon projectors. It would mean adding another set of balasts and projectors of course. I can imaging the upgrade costing 4-5 hundred for the HID set if the work is done yourself. ;)
nolanrob123 06-18-2007, 02:10 PM Through working on them the inside projector will be halogen, and the outer one will be retrofited with a valeo bi-xenon projector. That keeps the same bulb on at all times and just moves the light shield in the projector up which completely opens the projector, instead of half which illuminates the whole street plus whatever benefit comes from the halogen side. The project is going very slow since I have been focused on the tail lights (which I just finished) with an led kit. The lamps are on the back burner at this moment since I have just switched jobs and I am working at both right now=no spare time :( It will be done soon enough though and I will post the pictures.
Throwdown 06-18-2007, 10:50 PM When you post pics, post a DIY thread :)
foo77 06-18-2007, 11:22 PM looks hot :smoker: wonder how it look like with RRR eyelids

smokedRX8 07-29-2007, 09:15 PM while were on the topic of headlights does anyone know what "K" the factory xenon runs at... im buying PIAA bulbs for the parking lights and i have found 6000K.? I have "smoked" the headlights and tailights using black paint...i got a professional painter to do them and the darker they are, the more the xenons show purple. i would think the factory xenons run at 5100K but im not sure. :)
ivory8 07-30-2007, 03:14 AM woahhh huge bump but...has anyone done this yet? id like to know just b/c i think it would look sick lol
