View Full Version : Custom LED Footwell Lights!!!
Rotary Rasp 06-04-2007, 01:56 AM I have 2 pairs of footwell lights for sale. I made them for my car but decided to re-do them with two rows of leds (one for running, one for interior lights).
The lights are tired to the interior lights, when the door is opened, the LEDs come on.
They are very easy to install and can be done within 15 minutes. I have pictures of exactly where to tap the wires.
The OEM footwell lights are $120 bucks and they aren't even LED.
$50 Shipped
PM me if you are interested!

j/k They look great, it really compliments the blue in the gauge cluster well and is easy on the eyes. I would love to have them if I wasn't saving up for a midpipe and exhaust.

Jedi54 06-05-2007, 12:17 PM These things are AWESOME guy, 10000 times better then the crappy footwell lights that Mazda sells.
These LED's are brighter and will last much longer then the Mazda kit. I'm surprised people haven't jumped on them yet.
XDEEDUBBX 06-05-2007, 12:34 PM well im going to take one set! in red please rodge! bring it to the meet tommorow
Labop 06-05-2007, 01:35 PM Those look great! Where do they tap in? Cigarette lighter, or direct to the fuse box?
Rotary Rasp 06-05-2007, 02:34 PM They tap into the interior lights. They operate just like the door lights.
mahuna 06-05-2007, 08:16 PM i`ll take the other set if you still have it
spokenstone 06-05-2007, 08:23 PM I'd like to get a set also if you still have them.
RXH8TED 06-05-2007, 08:28 PM still have any?
rx8guy86 06-06-2007, 07:50 AM You should mass produce these... I was also thinking of buying a set....
racer 13b 06-06-2007, 10:07 AM ^ What he said.
Jedi54 06-06-2007, 10:28 AM C'mon Rasp....the people have spoken! Now back to the Batcave to make more!! :fruit:
XDEEDUBBX 06-06-2007, 10:37 AM well im gonna have one of them..i hope..haha
Rotary Rasp 06-06-2007, 10:38 AM Well, I only have a enough leds to make a few more sets.
The company that I order from has a minimum order amount of 100 leds. I don't know if I'll be ordering any more at this point.
Send me a PM if anyone is interested.
hough2696 06-06-2007, 10:40 AM Please Make More, I'm Interested!
shazbot28 06-06-2007, 12:28 PM You guys should get on this! It's not really the Fast and Furious style at all. The picture doesn't do justice to seeing them in real life which are amazing. They're a little more suttle (sp?) than the picture shows.
I'll install the first one that wants to pay for like an In n' Out burger at the meet tonight.
By the way, I was the one (besides Rotory Rasp) installing for the cars at Rotory Rasp's BBQ.
Jedi54 06-06-2007, 12:32 PM YUP, Shazbot installed the lights on my car. (as usual, my car was the guinea pig) :D:
416to212 06-06-2007, 01:28 PM Where is the best place to stick the LEDs? Can I see a picture of where it's mounted?
Michael's8 06-06-2007, 01:32 PM Rodger has my $ already.
Looks like I'm one of the lucky ones. Woooo Hoooo! :blue:
Michael
Rotary Rasp 06-06-2007, 01:35 PM Where is the best place to stick the LEDs? Can I see a picture of where it's mounted?
These are pictures of a combo set I made.
Blue lights operate with the door lights and the red leds operate with the parking lights.

http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u274/rx8rasp/DSCF0318.jpg
Rotary Rasp 06-06-2007, 01:38 PM I'll be providing the mounting hardware.
krock1030 06-06-2007, 02:13 PM would we be able to mount them under the driver and passenger seat??
Jedi54 06-06-2007, 02:15 PM sure, you just need to find a place to attach them and run the wires to a proper source.
Rotary Rasp 06-06-2007, 02:16 PM would we be able to mount them under the driver and passenger seat??
Yes, however, you'd have to extend the wires.
vIce^gRip 06-06-2007, 02:34 PM I'd buy into your new set... The Red and Blue Combo!
That is not many either... 100 Minimum.. I assume per color.
So 200LEDs/16LEDs per Set=12 Units.
I am sure you could unload 12 Units in no time.
PM me when me set is ready so I can Pay ya!!! http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b205/awful1/wtu.gif
EDIT: So in theory... If your parking lights are on and you open the door both sets light up and make Purple!?!?!? The contrasting colors (if the case) I bet looks real cool.

yea, if I open the doors and night, I get purple footwell lights. It looks awesome.
I'm not sure that I'm going to be selling the combo set. It effectively doubles the cost because everything is done twice.
krock1030 06-06-2007, 02:52 PM Yeah it looks sick where you mounted it, I was just thinking that it would look pretty good under the driver's and passenger seat so not only the front get's lit, but also the leg-space for the rear passengers... Is extending the wires really complicated??
Jedi54 06-06-2007, 02:54 PM I'm not sure if it would light all the way up to the pedals if you put them under the seat. I guess if you faced the LED's towards the pedals, it might work...

Not at all.

Oh well... that is cool.
Can ya send me your diagram of the splices so I can make my own, but save the hassle of finding the tie-ins for the Running and Courtesy power supply wires?
snipaz2420 06-07-2007, 11:26 AM rotary rasp if you were willing to make the combo set i would be in for that.
Jedi54 06-07-2007, 11:30 AM Stay tuned guys... I talked to Rasp and there is a possiblity of him making a final batch. Don't hold me to that though, he's just playing with the idea.
Keep in mind, these are a little on the time consuming side to make.
MrSuicideDoor 06-07-2007, 11:43 AM i'd like some if there's a second batch, (just to get on record) 8D

NEVER would I steal your thunder. I only meant I was one of the first 2 within THIS thread to actually buy one of the two sets he was trying to sell.
I'm pretty sure, however, that when the folks on the forum saw that I was buying a set, that opened the floodgates to everyone else wanting them. (Don't you think?)
Anyway, back to the fact that you have kept your thunder.....(cuz, honestly, the fact that they were in your car did legitimize them - at least to me). So there.

It depends which wires you tap into. If it's only the curtosy lights (side door lights) then they won't go on while driving. But you can tap them into a wire that when you turn the key on the car, it turns on another set of LEDs. Not sure if Rasp is making the 2set lights on one side or not though.
The ones installed in the picture are only on when the door lights are on.
Rotary Rasp 06-08-2007, 02:16 PM The lights can be wired to go on with anything. The instructions that i'm making only show how to connect to the interior lights.
I have one blue set left. There are 3 people that PMed me stating that they want that set, however, no one has paid yet.
First person to pay gets them.
I still have a few red and amber sets.
Thats right, I said amber!
Rotary Rasp 06-08-2007, 02:18 PM If there is interest in people connecting them to the parking lights, I can make a instructions for that also. Keep in mind that these leds can ONLY hook to ONE or the other. If you want them to go on with the door and parking lights, you'll have to buy two sets.
Michael 06-08-2007, 02:52 PM I'd love to know what you'd price the Red/Blue Dual Combo sets at.
How difficult would it be to tap, say, the reds to come on when the headlights are on (assuming it's dark out, it'll match the red gauges) and the blues to come on when the doors are opened?
Otherwise, if you decide to go single colors, I'd be interested in blue on w/ headlights (if that's possible) or blue when door opens.
Rotary Rasp 06-08-2007, 04:16 PM I'm not going to make any combo's. If you want both colors you'll have to buy both colors and wire one for the interior lights and one for the parking lights.
I still have one blue left.
Rotary Rasp 06-08-2007, 07:16 PM Okay, the last blue has been sold for the time being. Please don't send payment for blues.

Can someone explain paypal to me? I really want to get this transaction done!
vIce^gRip 06-10-2007, 07:26 AM Can someone explain paypal to me? I really want to get this transaction done!
It is rather simple... goto paypal and register for free. You can use a credit card to draw funds from initially, but in order to be a "verified" account you will need to add your personal checking account to your paypal account. Paypal will then send a few .01-.04 cent transactions and then ask you to verify the amounts that they sent. Once you can prove that this is a legitimate account you are verified.
The whole point is that you can transfer funds from either a Credit Card or your Bank account to others who cannot accept Credit Cards or Wire Transfers with ease. Paypal does not cost the sender anything and cost the recipient a small fee.
www.paypal.com
Rotary Rasp 06-10-2007, 11:42 AM Let me know if you plan on using a credit or debit card. I have another account that it can accept those. The address I've been giving out is only for checking/savings transfer.
Payapl charges me 3.9% for to accept money in that other account.
If using a credit card or debit add $2 for paypal transaction fees.
Thanks,
Rodger

I have one red set left.
Whether I make another run greatly depends on the reviews from the first batch.

Rotary Rasp 06-14-2007, 02:18 PM ok, I've placed an order for enough LEDs for 10 sets of blue.
It will take about 2-3 weeks.
If you want one of these sets I suggest you pay now because I sold the first batch rather quickly.
Jedi54 06-14-2007, 02:19 PM I'll ask since I know someone's bound to.... "what about red?"
Rotary Rasp 06-14-2007, 02:29 PM I'll ask since I know someone's bound to.... "what about red?"
I ordered the reds from a local seller. I'll have more reds in a few days.
It's too bad that this seller doesn't offer any other color then red. They are real Lumileds LEDs, not the knock offs most people sell.
Philips Lumileds makes almost all the LEDs used in the auto industry.

devious12 06-15-2007, 01:10 AM I'd like to know if you can make something smaller that would fit in the window switch of my car. There is a small enough space to run very fine wire through the shell of the unit, and possibly place the led in the holes shown below second pic item from the left. I want to cut the lights that are there now instead of having to navigate around this small area to solder; I thought you may have something that I'm looking for. Thanks!

Yes that is possible to do. It wouldn't be any harder, you'd just have to tap two different wires.

Everything you need is in the bag except for tools. Included is a web address to the install instructions with large clear pictures. You won't have any trouble at all following the directions that Rodger gives you. :icon_tup:
I got up early this morning and installed them. Being an old fart with a bad back made the install go a little slower than it should have. I got everything done except find the wires and tap into them. My back needed a rest after the contortion display I put on in the parking lot while mounting the lights and strapping the wires in. I will finish that tomorrow morning. Hopefully, I will get out there a little earlier, before it gets so hot.
While resting, I checked out the rest of Rodger's site. Dude, how much did all of that Dynamat weigh? I know that took a lot of hours and sweat. I saw the front and rear seats out and the nice job you did on the floor. I was impressed. When I scrolled down far enough to see the headliner out and the Dynamat on the roof, all I could say was, "Oh my god!"
The carputer install is very clean and shows your talents. That took a lot of patience. Good job! :score:

wow, thanks for the compliments.
I've been taking things apart since I could reach the toolbox.
The shipping weight on the dynamat was 38 lbs. I used most of it, so I'd say it added about 30 pounds to the car.
Now go finish your install and post pictures. I love seeing how they look in others' car.
For those who want to see my site, check out: http://trickrx8.com
Wilson 06-24-2007, 01:13 AM I finished the install. I was worried that they would be too bright, but they are perfect. I was sitting there with the remote in one hand and the other hand on the door switch testing to see if they came on and turned off properly. Accidentally set off the alarm. Decided it was time to go inside before the neighbors lynched me. Did not go back out with the camera. :)
They look great and I am a happy customer.

I thinkyou got red, is that correct?
Take some pictures!
Michael's8 06-24-2007, 07:43 PM Rodger,
Got mine installed as well. (Blue LED's) The instructions were great, and very detailed.
Took me a while to find one of the wires, but your instructions said that would happen too. :)
I'm in the middle of moving, so this thread will have to rely on other's pictures. I'm just happy I had time to install them.
One thing I'm going to have to look into:
My feeling is that the "white" lights inside the cabin (one on each door, as well as the map/reading lights) definitely drown out the coolness of the blue LED's.
I know that it's possible to replace all of these with blue lights of some kind, and I'd consider doing that to the ones on the doors (I know, I know, I can search to find this, but if anyone reading this happens to know off the top of their head what I need to do to replace the door lights, as well as a good source for those bulbs - how hard a switch-out it would be, etc. I'd be grateful).
I don't want to lose the functionality of the reading lights, so I doubt I'll change those out. I may just have to live with the white light they give off (detracting from the blue LED's) in order to have them when I need em. (Anyone have any other ideas for me on this part?)
All in all, a very cool mod, with solid instructions, fast shipping, and from someone who deserves our support for some of the very reasons Wilson has already mentioned.
Thanks, Rodger.
Michael :)
hough2696 06-25-2007, 07:21 AM Hey Rodger,
I just put mine in this weekend and they look great!!! We did a little variation on the install and connected them to a hidden toggle switch so that I can control when I want the lights on. We also wired it almost entirely with the factory harness so that it looks like nothing was tapped so my local Mazda dealer wont harass me. I connected everything down to the fuse box so if I ever forget to shut them off, my battery wont kill itself! So far, best $50 I've spent on appearance! Thank You so much!!

Chamberlin 07-09-2007, 12:48 AM well heck, I have LEDs in every location already (white on the interior), and I do indeed like the look of blue footwell lights you've made here, so if you have another blue kit, hit me up on PM. I would definately hook up to running lights instead of dome. I think it will be neat to have the blueish cast with all the orangy-red stereo lights, as it reflects the design elements of the night-time gauge cluster.
Cheers.

If your going to complain about a product like this you need to step back for maybe 3 seconds and say to yourself " man im glad i just saved over 100 dollars from someone who attempts to provide an awesome service instead of going through the dealership"... if you wanted whatever something without a bubblewrapped package im sure he could have packed it in a steel briefcase and added an extra 20 dollars for you... i mean.. cmon
THANKS RODGER YOU ROCK
refugeefrompistons 07-10-2007, 09:15 PM Nah, i was being picky. I was describing the newspaper wrapping but no really, Great product!
Batman&TheBatmobile 07-12-2007, 12:28 AM installed, bitches. took quite a while longer than wilson did, but i'm satisfied. i just had some problems with the splicers not making good contact on the wires, but we're all good now. and my back and neck are now killing me, but the LED's look sick. if you're on the fence about it, get em. thanks a lot rasp.
laythor 07-12-2007, 01:19 AM First let me say.. best 50 bucks you'll spend for a "cool factor"
These LEDS are high quality and Rasp's work is top notch. :)
Instuctions are first rate and easy to follow.
My only problem was the second splice.. I have 3 wires that all look exactly like the one in the instructions... i had them all side by side and spent about 10 mintues trying to decide which one to use. I'm pretty sure if I had just stepped back and thought a moment I would of saved myself some trouble.
3 splices later (thankfully i have a ton of small gauge splices in my tool box) they work perfectly. The color is perfect and in no way overpowering.. just right.
FYI The second splice went into a seperate wire loom then the first.
Rotary Rasp 07-12-2007, 02:37 AM Thanks for all the good comments. I had no idea that mazda reused the same color wire that many times. Especially in the same general location. I'll see if I can find some way to clarify which wire.
Are you referring to the blue or green wire?
Make sure you push the wire all the way in before crimping.
Also, if you're a tall person... installing these can be a little hard on the neck. -no doubt

It was the green wire. If there was a difference between the three it was too subtle for me to notice. The blue was in the large loom and the correct green was found in the smaller loom right behind it.
The first wire I tapped into was constant on, the second seemed to be a lower voltage since the LEDS were very dim. Third time was a charm. When I got in this morning to head to work (5:30am) it was very nice to have the solid glow of blue showing off the footwell... now I need to scrub and clean those floor mats!
I'm 6'2" and I woke up today wondering why it felt like I had been hit in the side with a basball, till I remembered all that leaning on the door sill :lol2:
Rotary Rasp 07-12-2007, 10:52 AM I'll double check tonight, but I'm pretty sure both wires are in the same loom. There could be more than one green wire that works also.
Batman&TheBatmobile 07-12-2007, 03:02 PM for me they were.
Leesha 07-12-2007, 03:14 PM Ok boys, I need to know all that you can tell because I am doing this by myself!!
G3tR3DDY2GR3DDY 07-12-2007, 03:34 PM could it be possible that if there is another green wire that works than maybe you could have a lower and higher voltage for brighter and dimmer lights? i could use some more brightness maybe so that would be interesting to know....
Rotary Rasp 07-15-2007, 03:52 AM I have posted instructions on my site for those who want the leds to operate with the running lights.
Leesha 07-15-2007, 10:02 AM Thanks!! Do you think it will be too bright at night? Might light up the interior like a christmas tree???
Rotary Rasp 07-15-2007, 11:34 AM Depends what you consider bright. I have the red hooked up to my running lights and it doesn't bother me at all. I can't speak for blue because I haven't tried.
Leesha 07-15-2007, 11:36 AM Still haven't got your pkg. Hopefully this week sometime.
Rotary Rasp 07-15-2007, 11:43 AM Still haven't got your pkg. Hopefully this week sometime..
I dunno, I've had things take up to 3 weeks to get to Canada.

Thanks!
Mazdaspeed RX8 ver2 07-16-2007, 07:06 AM I'm interested in getting a pair of these! Very awesome, i havent been on the forums as much anymore, looks like im missing in on a lot of great stuff. Well, PM me if you still have a set available in blue. Thanks!
Chamberlin 07-16-2007, 02:37 PM Got mine today! Thanks! Looks like I gotta lot of wiring stuff to do this weekend, my FlexLite fan speed controller came today too...
I will take some nite pics once I get these footwell lights in, so you can see the blue... I did alot of custom CarPc status LEDs on my dash too, it all should look pretty neat...
Thanks Roger!

Throwdown 07-17-2007, 04:43 PM Mine arrived today, I have no qualms about the packaging. When people were saying newspaper I was kinda worried, but it was sent inside a bubble mailer which offers plenty of protection.
I'll put it on tonight and take pics.
qtwre 07-18-2007, 08:38 PM I just installed mine. The results are in! They look amazing! I didn't even realize that they matched the blue dash lights so well until I saw them.
Thanks Mr. Rash! You make good LEDs!
Rotary Rasp 07-19-2007, 11:09 AM thanks everyone!!!
and remember to post your pictures. :)
Also, if you have a problem installing them, don't hesitate to PM me.
BoBoF4T 07-20-2007, 05:07 PM I'm intertested in a pair.
I will let you know.
maskedferret 07-20-2007, 07:31 PM Finally got around to installing them today! I'll have pics tonight after I get home from work.
Instructions were great; my only difficulties were that I originally hooked into the red-blue wire instead of the blue-red wire (found the red-blue first, and didn't dig for the blue-red like I should have). This resulted in the LEDs flashing on and off whenever I locked the doors! That, and being left-handed under the steering wheel made it very difficult to crimp those blasted splicers. The splicers are a great thing; they certainly beat old-fashioned splicing, but I felt like a contortionist trying to crimp them with my left hand.
Spiffiest thing is how they fade out with the rest of the cabin lights! I went ahead and replaced my door lights with red ones to match and not drown the LEDs out so much.
maskedferret 07-21-2007, 01:15 AM Wow, these were dark pictures; can't hardly make out the steering wheel! Overall I think this was just perfect! The only thing I might go back and adjust is the passenger side light; I think I tightened it a tad too much, as I think it is slightly arched now to point the light towards the door a bit more than I may like, but that's being VERY nitpicky. You'll also notice in one of the shots that I have changed the color of the door lights; I think it works very well with the footwell lights.
maskedferret 07-21-2007, 01:16 AM Here's some more; I had a hard time figuring out some good angled shots to take. Flashless night pictures with my camera are very difficult to take without blur.
RR, I commend you on putting the effort into making these and hope you make some good money because of it; these footwell LEDs belong in everyones RX-8. I forsee a steady demand of them. :yumyum:
Jedi54 07-21-2007, 01:54 AM are you running a scanalyzer on an aftermarket screen?
maskedferret 07-21-2007, 02:18 AM Yup, I also have navigation on it too, but I felt it better to show off the sCANalyzer here instead ;) ; that's the JDM retractable tray with a 7" transflective Lilliput touchscreen - the hardware is in the glovebox. I am half-tempted to theme the OS to a more reddish nature to match the rest of the interior lights! :)
Jedi54 07-21-2007, 02:25 AM looks awesome! anyone know if you can run the scanalyzer on the oem nav?
Rotary Rasp 07-21-2007, 01:11 PM looks awesome! anyone know if you can run the scanalyzer on the oem nav?
yes, with a video processor, but you still need a computer.

Thanks for the kudos... :)
There is nothing I like more than hearing good reviews. I honestly think that this is one of the things that the car should have come with from the factory.
Leesha 07-24-2007, 06:58 PM Cool...Just got them and installed it myself!! They were easy to do. Will post pics when it gets dark...

Rotary Rasp 07-25-2007, 03:29 AM Looking good Leesha...
I responded to your PM, let me know if you have any questions about the rears.
peterlemonjello 07-25-2007, 06:30 AM All the pics look good. Can't wait until I get mine installed.
Leesha 07-25-2007, 09:17 AM Looking good Leesha...
I responded to your PM, let me know if you have any questions about the rears.
OMG You seriously ROCK!!
I installed the front LEDS with my husband only tightening the wire splice. I told him if anyone was going to screw anything up on my car that it would be me. I did all the wire work; THANKS TO YOUR EASY INSTRUCTIONS...Plus I fit easily under the dash. I don't and can't imagine how you guys do it. I just bearly fit under there!!
I installed my rears all by myself without any help at all...that's how good your instructions were. One thing...there are 2 blue/black wires. I used the smaller of the 2 and it worked.
The rears will probably go under my front seat in the front. Will decide later when it gets dark. Will post picks of that too. The instructions were so easy & I'm a female!!
The blues are brighter...
Thank you so much once again...:blue:
GotBass 07-25-2007, 03:55 PM I'm interested if you have any red lights remaining. Also sending a PM.

boanjangnararmine 08-14-2007, 08:16 AM PMd
Jedi54 08-14-2007, 01:16 PM If any of you are "on the fence" about whether to get these or not, you SHOULD!! These LED's are AWESOME!
You guys do realize that mazda charges $100 for their 'footwell lamp kit' that is nowhere near as good as these...
white311 08-14-2007, 02:58 PM Are these on when the running lights are on or when the door gets open???? Just wondering and they look sweet!! (refering to the pics)
Rotary Rasp 08-14-2007, 03:13 PM Are these on when the running lights are on or when the door gets open???? Just wondering and they look sweet!! (refering to the pics)
I include instructions for both.
white311 08-14-2007, 03:21 PM I include instructions for both.
Do you have any pics of just the running lights? Just trying to get an idea of how bright the glow is for normal night driving.
Rotary Rasp 08-14-2007, 04:43 PM There are lots of pictures throughout this thread. Here is one.
They are perfect for normal night driving.

kors-jan 08-14-2007, 08:26 PM I installed the blue footwell LED lights today and just now came inside from checking them out in the night. Very happy with the result.
Was easy to install -- though I must admit, finding the right colored wires was difficult for me. So many wires to find and difficult to see with my progressive bi-focals.
Rotary Rasp 08-15-2007, 12:02 PM For those who we're not sure... the leds will dim on/off with the interior lights. The outcome is a very factory look.
shazbot28 08-16-2007, 01:17 PM yes they are better than the OEM/JDM ones too...
Batman&TheBatmobile 08-16-2007, 05:34 PM another satisfied customer here just vouching again for how good these are and how good of a deal you're getting. great value, great overall look. i'd never done any work on my car before at all and this was an easy enough install for me.

Batman&TheBatmobile 08-16-2007, 11:50 PM ha i kinda have to. they look amazing and its currently my only real change to the car. except that i smashed it into a telephone pole. :score: :banghead: :cussing: but ill make sure to get pics up when i get it back in a week and a half or so.
