Whilst filling up today, a young man came up to me and introduced himself as an RX-8 owner. We talked about our cars for a bit. He has a Borla exhaust and a Revi Intake, and he's looking to do some more mods.

I asked him if he ever visited this site- and he said he had never heard of it. No wonder he's starved for ideas.

Can you imagine owning this car without the aid and information this forum provides? I can't. Anyway, nice to meet a local with the same car.

 

I owned my 8 for over a year before finding this site. Most of my mods were added before arriving here, and I don't feel any regret over anything I have done. There is a lot of information to be had here, but there is also a lot of misinformation on this forum a well. The best thing I have gained from this forum is the group of friends world wide that I have met since becoming a member. It sure makes road trips and vacations interesting.

I have an account on Facebook and found a page dedicated to the RX-8. Most of them didn't know about the site.

I find that strange, because if you go through the effort of joining a club on facebook, wouldn't you think they would look to join one on the actual internet?

 

Well, maybe that tells you something, but when I owned my last car, an Alfa Romeo 164 sedan, the forum told you so many tricks on maintenance and prevention, it probably saved me thousands.

There's misinformation on any forum, but there is usually someone there to correct it as well.

 

Hell. This site was a big part of my decsion to change my MS6 to an RX-8.

So to answer your question, no I can not.

 

I found this forum before I got my car. It was extremely informative and I never posted any of the dumb noob posts about "reliabilty?".

 

But that didn't stop you from posting on every single thread titled "reliability", telling people to "search".......lol..........

 

Because they don't post anything in their thread that shows that they attempted to do any research first.

Many people who might buy an RX-8 don't because they're worried about reliability. And if they come to this forum seeking this information, they're likely to:

1) be told to "search," and this (sadly) requires more effort than many people are willing to expend

2) find a lot of complaining about problems (it is an automotive forum, after all)

Any wonder Mazda can't sell the car?

If these noob threads are a persistent problem, how about a sticky on the topic?

I'd be happy to post the results of my research there once some are available. I'm collecting data on the 2004 already, and hope to start with other years soon--just need more participants.

Even if the problem rate is fairly high, it'll be much lower than many noobs fear it is. Especially for the big stuff like an engine failure. Forums make this sort of thing seem much more common than it actually is.

 

I did my research without this forum before buying the car. My coworker was actually the one to introduce me to this site when he found out I bought an 8 (he frequents different forums a lot). But yea nothing surprising about the car when I got it. But I did learn a lot on how to take care of her by reading stuff on here.

 

I bought my car after having visited this forum first. I read the complaints and the MPG threads and I saw through these things (as I've been a member of other car clubs). I even looked up what people were buying their cars for and how much I should demand to pay! All the how-tos are really appreciated too.

 

Odd I joined here 6 months to a year prior to owning an RX8. I think you should always search out a forum of owners before buying a car so you know what you are getting into.

 

Truth is a large percentage of buyers are just lazy. They will read a few reviews, pick up consumer reports and that is the end of it. Posting on a forum, or even knowing a car forum exist is beyond the scope of MANY people.

For the others, I agree, a newbie sticky or simply a FAQ might be a very good idea.

 

Well I joined this forum before I thought about buying a 8. I all ways wanted one, Just could not afford one. But just like life things change.

 

I found this forum about 2 weeks after getting my car, and my first reaction was...........damn, I shouldn't have bought it, because the forum was flooded with bs posting, and unhelpful "search" members..........dude, if all we need to do is "search" then why the hell do we need you? god.........(flame me away, I don't give a damn) but once you appreciate the car, its all good

 

I myself joined the forum before buying it.. I even made a thread on which way should I go (AT or MT).. Haha. And sure, some of you might say it wasn't the best choice in the world, but I'm satisfied with it.

 

Lurked a few months, joined & then bought it about a month later. The site's been great help, but I wasn't looking for an 8 forum while researching, it just came up in the hit list.

prly would have been on stock tires this past winter, tho. God forbid someone at the stealerships have enough sense to say "oh btw, those tires are dangerous in winter."

 

Should be law to have a warning notice in the documentation with any car sold with only summer performance tires. Well except for Florida or Texas.

 

If anyone would have queried google before buying the car you would have found this site... I think the site was up... what maybe 1 or 2 years before the car came out.?. I signed up to the board maybe 3-4 months before the car hit the US.

Leads me to conclude some bought the car from reading some paper articles (or researching very little) they sure didn't use the Internet before making their purchase.
