anyone care to explain what the big deal is? is helix high-end product?

rg200amp

its a exhaust that has the least amount of bends, so the exhaust can freely escape with even less backpressure, and if you have ever heard a sound clip, it IMHO has the best sound out of any other catback. if i did not allready have the MS dual, i would have bid on this till i won.

but question again, can the muffler actually be replicate to create similar exhaust notes?

to make an exact copy of this exhaust, i think they're going to have to chop up this prototype...

Chop up the prototype? Omg....so im guessing this replicas arent really going to happen? What do you guys think? Swoope i didnt really understand what you said , are you saying gruppe-s is raising the price to get more money? or something like that? I already have a single center exit exhaust but i kind of want to go dual exhaust again , nothing better then a helix....too bad i dont have the $$$ or i would bid till i die :). Argh , hope we can replicate this so the rx8 community can have a nice new exhaust -_-. Is it even possible to replicate the muffler( as thats the most important piece basically)?

it does not need to be exact. just get the pipe dia right and the correct mufflers... good welds. and of course the y done correct. and the right sized gaskets. silly it might be improved.. but the mufflers are the key... sexy..

just checked bidder 3 in the lead.

i will not explain how ebay works, but you have got a clue..

as to an exhaust. there are several good ones out there.. this one just has a great tone.. who knows if it makes more power, most make little...

now read my post above.. if you can figure the ebay out you will understand..

yup, the muffler is the key. that is the chopping up i meant by. it would have to be opened it up unless helix is willing to provide info on the muffler. the piping is... well possible just by measurements outside.

There's got to be legal issues with copying someone's intellectual property and reselling it to the public. Is there any way to do this legally?

anyone that really knows mufflers will know what it is..

and where to find it.. the big challange might be why helix never made it. did the muffler source dry up???? they look a bit like the rx7 stores exhaust..

I'm not related to bidder 3. I placed 1 bid only and won it for the benefit of this community.

I'm... not on land right now and wonder how I outsniped some of those broadband guys. As it turns out, it came down to picking a good number. With my slow connection (this is slower than dial-up), I only had time to place 1 bid. Whoever did 650 as their final bid is a noob.

I'm on assignment right now and I can't tell you when I'll be back. But soon after I'm back I'll be flying out of California, hopefully to Florida. I'll then be busy for a while. In the meantime, if this is going to work, I'll need some advice on how to get started, how much to expect to pay for custom fabrication work, and what the chances of success are.

Photos once I return.

Still, sounds like you'll have your hands on the exhaust, sound clips, pics, much sooner than me.

From what you've written, you guys have plans to duplicate, fabricate, and sell. If so there's no need for me to do anything, other than to install and enjoy the exhaust and pass along any info.

If mine breaks later on there's no harm in making another copy for myself I suppose.

lepichichi,
Step One) Ask yourself, what is the title of the thread you are posting in?
If you will be going off topic see step 2
Step Two) Do a search
Search not returning results?
Step Three) Post a new thread

You're new and you LuV your Rotary - that's great. Realize that most questions have been answered unless the product came out 5 minutes ago.

SIGH,
I'm not 1 to say use search! but wtf...

GG ninja ,
Honestly why would you ask for info about something, that has nothing to do with, what everyone is talking about? Most people here want the sound this exhaust makes, and its pretty clear they like "IT", so why would you ask them what they think about something else besides what they want?

Anyways G/L on the exhaust.

Lol , well to answer your question i think Agency power sounds nice. If you're one to look for weight savings im not too sure about the weight. But i think 700 something for full titanium is a good price.

The Agency Power system is not a full titanium system, but has got titanium tips only. OK back on topic then. :)

Just food for thought. RE amemiya is most likely the top rotary tuner in the world. and most likely knows a good bit more than 90% of other companies
free flow doesn't mean more power

Want to keep you all up to date. I'm in the search phase right now. Currently, I have limited bandwidth while operating at sea, but those of you on land in San Diego, National City, and Chula Vista +/- 50 miles, if you could start shooting local companies emails to help me find one that can do this for our rx8 community. I have emailed Extreme MS in San Diego so far, last one sent got failure notice though. We need a company that can get those exact mufflers and can recreate with the same type of steel and weld technique/technology.

Soon as I get back it's going to be put on, might as well do it at a place that can take measurements simultaneously. If I already know which company to use before getting back, it'll save us that much more time.

The sooner we can get these duped the better. I don't care if it is my exhaust that is used first or if N rider89 is able to get these duped first, just as long as they get made ASAP. If you've read my previous posts, you know I was never interested in putting an exhaust on my RX8. I decided to win that ebay auction just to secure the win for rx8club, and in the midst of 1 minute 30 seconds remaining, couldn't sort out who was who and had to sqeeze the trigger.

I got it installed this week. Installation cost was $90, although corrections brought the price to $150. The tips had to be removed and re-welded, since they were lopsided. Also the two mufflers wouldn't line up correctly at the junction, so the left muffler junction was cut off and rewelded. The stock exhaust pipe was cut off to allow it to fit back into the car. I wanted to try fitting it in the trunk, with the pipe extending through the ski slot, but they thought it'd be too big and so I told them to cut it.

The bad news, is that so far the sound it not what I expected. Kind of makes the point of duplication moot.

Should have cut it off on the pipe. not on the muffler side.
Then you could have possibly resell the muffler :-)

No one's asked for it yet, but I am looking into getting a decent recording made. It's the only way to go at this point, let people decide for themselves if they still want the sound or not. Once warmed up, it is mellower than we have been led to believe.

I should be able to get the recording equipment for around $300, as I already have an outboard AD with 1/4 inch inputs. Just need a set of wide-bandwidth measurement mics, short mic stand, stereo bar, 2-ch mic pre with phantom power, and all cables.

Update: Ordered all the gear. It's coming from the east coast by UPS, should be here Friday. Give me a few hours to familiarize myself with the gear, maybe recording Friday or Saturday at the latest as long as the gear arrives on time. I'll post up in the multimedia forum with the sounds when complete. Here's what:

M-audio DMP3 2-ch mic preamp: Lowest I could go and still get decent sound. Should be good with its Burr-Brown opamps.

Behringer ECM8000 measurement mics, 15 Hz - 20 kHz: should be relatively uncolored as they are for measuring in-room frequency response and other testing. Useful low-frequency extension for exhaust purposes.

Other than the above and a few microphone cables and patch cables, I'll be recording with the Ego-Sys Waveterminal U2A USB that I already have. Will connect it to the laptop to record down in the garage, direct to 16-bit/44.1khz.

As you notice from the pictures, it comes with only two exhaust hangers on the back. The OEM exhaust has four hangers on the back.

The exhaust shop relied on just the two back hangers, plus fabricating a new middle pipe hanger to replace the broken one in the photo. In part because of this, over 3 weeks time, the Helix exhaust tips hung lower and lower into the exhaust shrounds. Yesterday the right tip was almost touching the exhaust shrouds, and while revving, possibly touching the shrouds under vibration.

The exhaust had lost a lot of bass and volume, and was sounding almost stock...

I took it to the exhaust shop today, and they fabricated two more hangers, so that all 4 OEM rubber hangers are now in use. They also managed to bring it up an inch to get it off of the exhaust shrouds. Some of the bass and volume have returned since raising it up a bit. I'm not sure why. The right still hangs lower than the left.

At this point most of the problems have been fixed with my Helix. Its probably in good enough condition to send off for manufacturing, but I'm also ready to drive across the country to my new job location in a week. The sound clips and this have pushed back my timeframe and now it is in conflict with my relocation.

I am looking to get a Mazdaspeed exhaust to replace the Helix so that I can send the Helix off some time.
