View Full Version : Hail Storm!!!
karstman7 05-28-2007, 12:31 AM :banghead:
I got caught in 5 mins of a hailstorm tonight on the way home - golfball sized hail came out of nowhere and I did my best to squeeze under a bridge on the highway but it was too late - I've had my rx8 for a little under 2 weeks and now the entire hood and roof is covered in dents - i'm ready to cry ...i called my insurance but b/c of the holiday i won't know if it's covered until the adjuster calls me on tues...i've never seen anything like it in my life until now...ugh.:banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:
i took pics but it doesn't show the extent of the damage so it's not worth posting

try to be a little sympathetic. he might plan on posting pics when it's lighter out. if you noticed what time he posted, it was well past dark. karstman, i was stuck in the same storm, fortunately we didn't get the hail here, just alot of downed lines and wind. good luck with insurance, it should be covered under comprehensive with a slight deductible. someone threw chunks of cement at my car and a few others on the block and the dents and scratches were covered.
karstman7 05-28-2007, 01:20 AM yep u called it carbon - my pics were done at the car wash under the lights and were crap - i'll see what the morning light brings...
j67345 05-28-2007, 06:31 AM ouch, that really sucks!! curse of the silver, man...you just posted pics, too. man, that has to be frustrating
NoTears316 05-28-2007, 06:45 AM That really sucks! I hope everything works out.
DarkBrew 05-28-2007, 07:47 AM Sorry to hear that. Maybe they'll let you get a CF hood?
lesper4 05-28-2007, 09:01 AM wow that sucks are hail in cali is much more like wet snow, hope it works out for you
psychodad 05-28-2007, 10:09 AM I've had hail damage before on other cars. I can imagine what an aluminum hood is going to look like after that. If thunderstorms are in the forecast, the 8 goes in the garage and stays there. I feel for you man.

Same here...I have also had one of my vehicles caught out in golf-ball size hail and it left about 40 divots in the hood, roof, and sides. Some will be very evident, but some won't be, and you have to look very closely to make sure you get all of them identified and fixed. Do the paintless dent removal if you can as respraying your car will never be as good as the factory finish.
Like psychodad, I am fortunate that I can drive a differnt vehicle on stormy days and avoid messing the 8 up. Sorry to hear about your misfortune man, especially with such a new vehicle.
JR
NgoRX8 05-28-2007, 10:41 AM it should be covered. sucks that your car was still new though.
CarAndDriver 05-28-2007, 11:03 AM Okay well good look, any pics are better than none though.
karstman7 05-28-2007, 01:48 PM these are the best i could get - i guess it's not as bad as the canary yellow rx8 hail damage photos - but these shots really don't show the true extent of the damage - the hood has about 25-30 dents, the roof about 15-20, and the doors a couple...:banghead:
karstman7 05-28-2007, 01:49 PM what's this curse of the silver stuff?
psychodad 05-28-2007, 02:06 PM It'll rub out.
BTW, about this paintless dent removal. Is it really that swuft? I've always suspected all those cars I see with quarter sized spots of paint missing were the results of this years later.
CarAndDriver 05-28-2007, 03:00 PM Looks terrible. :( Hope it gets fixed. The dentless removal shops probably will be able to help.

It's pretty obvious. That does really suck.

If it's "dentless", then what will they be removing?

x2 .
canaryrx8 05-28-2007, 05:41 PM sorry to hear but it's easily fixed :)
Your damage is meager compared to what happened to me 2 years ago, if you need solace or consolation look up my thread, it'll make you feel better in a heartbeat :D:

I think it's called paintless dent removal...
They remove the dents without affecting your current paint finish.

CarAndDriver 05-28-2007, 11:32 PM Oops I had a brain fade. The shops in the San Jose area go under Dent Pro. I think they are a chain.

yep, custom golfball bodywork :D:
karstman7 05-29-2007, 04:49 PM when i brought the car to the shop and the put some lights on it they found over 200 dents total - ugh - the paintless dent repair guy can't do it all so it also had to go to the body shop after - total bill about 4,000 but it's covered by insurance w/ only a 100 dollar deductible...whew.
Jedi54 05-29-2007, 05:00 PM every time I see the words, "hail storm" I get evil flashbacks of Canary's car!
BlueFrenzy 05-29-2007, 08:13 PM Ouch! Sorry to hear ... hope you get it all sorted out.

dang, just a week? mine took like 2 months lol Hope they do a good job, scrutinize the shizzle out of it when you go to pick it up, even bring someone with you if you can. Don't let getting it back cloud your judegement like what happned to me 2 years ago. Hopefully where you took it wasn't flooded with claims like the place mine went to and they do the work correctly instead of rushing it out the door. :)
karstman7 06-16-2007, 08:51 AM ok guys I need some advice...
I have no pics yet - went back to the body shop...let me give you some info:
the shop is a big collision center owned by Lancaster toyota mazda and it is huge and busy and was a shop that my insurance deals with so i expected a good job.
I got to my car and the dents are gone - it looks GREAT! - but...there are some problems...there was primer on the front windshield - they cleaned it off when i complained but how sloppy can you be? There was excess material on the edge of the door but they cleaned that up too. But before I even did anything I noticed the mileage - they drove the car 5 miles. Now I think that is pretty excessive considering there was no need to test drive it for dents - the dentless repair shop is on the same road less than an 8th of a mile away - so I look more closely and there are several rock chips in the front bumper and hood that are new. I couldn't believe it - some ass took it out and chipped it up. I have pics from right before that show they weren't there. Also I just bought the car 3 weeks ago so I admire it every day and I would definitely have noted them before. The manager was standoffish right away - when i questioned the mileage he said that's not right let's go look up the mileage at check in - when he got out the paper work - I was right. Then he said "Oh I know - these cars have to warm up we can't just take it and move it." I agreed but questioned the need to drive it versus just letting it idle to warm up...he didn't really have an answer. So I complained to my insurance company and they will send out somebody this week to look at the car and settle the issue with the shop. I've had body work done a few years back on a different car and it was perfect and professional. They even gave me a bottle of touch up paint. This "big" shop was sloppy - primer on the windshield, etc. I am furious...and i'm not letting this blow over...I take care not to be behind trucks on the highway and I know you can't prevent all but these were not there before. The manager said these are old there is rust in them - first of all there is no rust and second of all the one that is in the front PLASTIC bumper looks exactly the same - so it's rusting too?
Any advice?
