View Full Version : Guinea pigs, just my luck !!!
sportrider24 05-26-2007, 08:29 PM I bought my son a guinea pig about 3 weeks ago. While in the pet store I specifically told the associate that I wanted a male guinea pig so I didn't have to worry about it being pregnant. They assured me that while I had picked a male, they were too young to reproduce any way. GUESS WHAT !!! My sons guinea pig is a female. How do I know this you ask ??? Because it just shit out two babies !!!!! I must say I am suprised. I would have expected little hairless rats. These things came out with a full head of hair and are only about 8 hours old and are already chasing mom around the cage. Just thought I would share this with everyone.
DarkBrew 05-26-2007, 08:45 PM My daughter got a guinea pig five years ago. He eats like a pig! They really cost more to own that you can imagine!
They love timothy hay, carrots, cucumber, lettuce, apples, oranges, green or red peppers etc. Use only aspen bedding or the recycled paper bedding.
sportrider24 05-26-2007, 08:58 PM Why only aspen bedding ? I've been using red cedar chips. Is this bad for them ??
DarkBrew 05-26-2007, 09:04 PM Pine is bad for the lungs.
Ceder is uh mmm ..... fragrant but I'm not sure if it's bad for them. I might have to do with the oils.
The aspen is good for them and doesn't create much odour.
The paper pellets are good as well.
mike01 06-01-2007, 11:16 PM My wife got two guinea pigs a couple of years ago. She got both females and shortly after we got them, one of them had two babies. For some reason we ended up keeping all 4 of them, fortunetely they are all female so we have not had any more babies. Cedar bedding is harmful to guinea pigs because of the aromatic oils, aspen or the ground up paper bedding is the best. Pine is pretty safe (at least a lot safer than cedar) and is what I use because it comes in big packs and I could never afford the more expensive stuff because I have 4 guinea pigs.

No no no. I have two winter white dwarf hamsters and they're fabulous. They're so cute. My mom hates rodents and even she admitted they were cute...
Guinnea pigs though... we had one and while it was the most friendly, playful, adorable thing ever (and I miss it to death), it was really dirty and I wouldn't want to have to take care than more than one of those things at a time.

If I remember correctly (back to my younger days when we had hamsters), pines/cedars/yew/evergreens in that family, have resins in them that are harmful/poisonous to animals. turpentine (paint thinner) comes from pine resin for example.
I'm sure you could google it and find lots more info (and newer as well).

AndrewE 06-04-2007, 09:03 AM wow, boosted pig?
tony_673 06-04-2007, 09:15 AM Yeah. The only turbo I can afford right now.
Winfree 06-05-2007, 12:34 AM There are guinea pig societies that even show them, just like dog shows -
In South America they really do eat them, and have special places built into their stoves to keep one while it is being fattened. Just don't let them get loose - they like to chew stero wires...
tajabaho1 06-05-2007, 02:00 AM Yeah. The only turbo I can afford right now.

tony_673 06-06-2007, 08:47 AM I'd be happy to donate my guinea pig to you if it makes you feel better.
