View Full Version : San Antonio Drag strip
spdspappy 09-27-2003, 10:14 PM Has anybody ever been out there? They did a news article tonight about how people that would normally be street racing go out there. I wouldn't mind seeing what the car can really do (once I get it broken in of course... only about 112 miles 'til 600!). At least I wouldn't have to worry about getting a ticket...
AfroCreame 09-28-2003, 01:58 AM Not sure if we're talking about the same one, but Ancira and another place sponser a track off of I-10 between San An and Seguin. Was thinking about taking mine out there some time. Maybe we could hook up once you get your car broken in and I get an oil change..
spdspappy 09-28-2003, 07:54 AM Sounds like a plan!
San Antonio Raceway is an excellent track. It is in Marion on the north side of I-10 at the Santa Clara exit. The condition of the track and facilities are great. The official scales are open on test and tune nights so after you pick up your time slip on the return road you can drive right onto the scale and read the digital readout.
A few of us are planning on going in a couple/few weeks including a local 3 rotor 3rd gen. I'll post when we are going.
spdspappy 09-29-2003, 06:27 PM Sounds good...
eccles 09-30-2003, 01:28 AM Keep us posted. If I still have my car by then, I'll be glad to join y'all there.
It seems a small group of local RX-7 guys are going to the track this wednesday night. My RX-7 is in a poor state of tune but I'll probably run it anyways. The 8 isn't broken in yet so no track runs yet.
shawrf1 09-30-2003, 07:41 PM dvcn: can you post the specifics?
i.e. cost/equipment needed/time?
Thanks,
Rob

Every wednesday and friday night are 'test and tune' nights. Pay $10 to watch, $15 to run. They have top notch (for a dragstrip) facilities (bathroom, concession stand food and beer). If you run faster than a 14.00 you need a helmet. The gates open at 6pm. Tech inspection is minimal.
If you get there early you can make a lot of runs in a short amount of time. After 7:30-8pm it gets more crowded but nothing horrible.
I may or may not show up. I am drugged up. I hope it's just allergy and not the flu. It's really difficult to drive when your nose is randomly dripping.
I think I've posted this in other places before, but a clutch drop is not the way to lauch a car. I'm guessing somewhere between 6500-7500rpm and slip the clutch for about 10' is the way to go. Also, if it is your first time at the track go on the last yellow light, not after the green is lit. This will help your reaction time a lot. Reaction time has nothing to do with the ET but it absolutely matters when you are trying to beat the car in the other lane.
On wednesday nights they also run a bracket race in between the test and tune runs. Sign up for it, it's fun and free. I was lucky enough to win a trophy and a really nice jacket the last time I went. It has nothing to do with speed and everything to do with consistency.
Make sure you weigh your car at the track. If you can't find the scale ask the person who hands you your timeslip on the return road.
1 BAD TIB 10-02-2003, 01:22 AM that track is awsome you guys will have a blast
eccles 10-03-2003, 02:35 PM Anyone planning on going tonight? I might be tempted to make the trip down, especially with the cooler weather around here currently.
You should go!
I can't make it. Just starting to get over some bug that I must have picked up in dirty CA, I definitely can't blame it on Sevenstock, that was great!
spdspappy 10-04-2003, 11:28 AM eccles, I thought you were bringing your car back. Were you able to find another job?

eccles, I thought you were bringing your car back. Were you able to find another job? No, still nothing on the job front. But Mazda hasn't completed the paperwork for the buyback yet, so I figured I may as well take it to the strip while I can.
spdspappy 10-04-2003, 11:50 AM Sorry to hear about the goings on the job front. Did you make it out last night? How did it go?

not too sure why they are positioned like that, but that is where the parade grounds are for when the basic tranies graduate.
Warning! There is a group of guys that are planning to go to the track within the next week. Possibly a group of 5-7+ RX-7's. I'll post if people confirm.

spdspappy 10-11-2003, 02:19 PM Sweet! Now if we could get them to come up to the Forum one Friday night, that would be cool too!
Looks like some RX-7 folks are trying to make it to the track this wednesday night, 10/15. I'll be in a blue, 13 sec 1st gen RX-7. Be sure to introduce yourself.

hopefully it doesnt rain
Not one RX-8 showed up! There were a couple of 350Z's running 14.3's. Four RX-7's including the three rotor turbo. It was a perfect night to run and not crowded.
