View Full Version : Guys, what's your POV on the rx8 after all the hp BS.
energie 09-27-2003, 05:31 PM I have just bought my rx8 in titanium grey a few days ago, picking up in 3 days :D
however, i have having second thoughts, and going by the infiniti dealership wasn't a good move either, the sales person talked a lot of crap about the rx8, it got me to think:
I paid full retail for it. 6 speed GT, came to about 48000 CND.
now:
1) how do you justify the RX8 over G35 coupe? my reasoning is that it's cheaper, more stylish, i find the g35 really plain.
2) Are you worried that the retail price of RX8 is going to go down because of the Horsepower drama?
all in all, it's still a sexy car, I just want to make myself feel better about buying the RX8 instead of G35, but i am having trouble coming up with reasons.
so all you rX8 lovers here, please give me a hand!
thanks in advance!
RodsterinFL 09-27-2003, 05:45 PM I spent about 2 months shopping for a car during June/July( knowing that the RX was coming soon) and bought the RX 8 BUT I shopped the 350Z, the G35 coupe and sedan, S2000 and BMW's. There has been several threads of people that did the same and much is a repeat. I'll give you my 2 cents.
negative
G35 coupe has an unuseable back seat for adults.
lots of silver spray painted plastic to scratch
insurance is slightly higher
positive
nice looking
great torque
I re-shopped during the buyback offer and came to the same conclusion only this time add this to my negatives.
cruder ride than RX
Did the Miata drop in value due to the horsepower descrepancy? No Did Nissan/Infinity provide anything for the owners when their flagship Q car did not PERFORM as stated? No
Which is worse, a car that a specification figure is misquoted or a car that actually performs less than stated?

Exactly what I did, and I reached the same conclusion. The G is a hell of a nice car for the money. Really can not go wrong with it. The big thing for me was the larger rear seats(I have two kids) and the wankel, and the style.
Gord96BRG 09-27-2003, 07:05 PM I didn't like the cramped back seat of the G35 Coupe, and the whole Nissan/Infiniti FM platform (shared by the G35, 350Z, G35C, FX SUVs, etc) is overweight because it has to be used for so many different models, so the car is heavier and feels heavier in the handling and responsiveness - especially compared to the lighter, more nimble RX-8. The RX-8's interior is nicer and better quality than the G35C, it's more stylish, the handling is sharper and more responsive, the back seat is roomier and fits real adults, and the rotary engine has a unique sound and feel that is very sporty. Plus, the RX-8 is significantly cheaper!
Where in Canada are you?
Regards,
Gordon
8_wannabe 09-27-2003, 07:13 PM You have absolutely made the right decision. The RX-8 is just so damn fun and stylish. It'll turn heads like no Lexus ever will. Read this thread (http://www.rx8forum.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=9437) for all the reasons the '8 is so cool that you might not have thought of. 128 posts and counting.
Despite all the drama and hyperbole among RX-8 fans about the missing hp, this is totally a non-issue among the general public. The story barely got mentioned in auto rags cuz it's just not that big a deal, and non-owners don't know/don't care/aren't paying attention. Don't sweat it.
Finally, there are strong rumors suggesting MSRP for the '8 is about to increase which will increase resale value for us current owners.
You made the right choice. Don't sweat it now; enjoy your car!
khoney 09-27-2003, 07:19 PM Same as it was before. The RX-8 was, and still is, the car for me. If someone else started making rotaries, I guess I would've had to cross-shop, though!
mikeb 09-27-2003, 07:44 PM IMO there is no car like it right now
Its got looks, speed and a rotary
I admit I'm an enthusiast, not an owner.
However, several items about the G35 turn me off.
1. Some like the styling. Personally I don't. The Rx-8 has a unique style, while sometimes the G35 reminds me of the new Solara coming out.
2. I prefer the interior of the Rx-8. I especially like the idea that you're staring at a 9k tach with a digital speedometer at the same place.
3. Mazda is sticking to their performance figures tested, despite the 238hp claim. From my POV, 0-60 in around 6sec is fast. It's faster than most cars out there.
4. Surprisingly, in EVO magazine, when the Rx-8 was compared to the VW R32 (v6 VW AWD Golf), the Golf had plenty of torque, AWD, more weight, yet the 0-60 figures were about the same anyway. (Too lazy to look it up.) Even more surprisingly, the Rx-8 has a higher HP/weight ratio.
5. Just reading about the handling/ride characteristics along with a rotary engine adds to the driving experience.
I also think I'm in the demographic at which this car is aimed. Soon to be college graduate 22 years or older.
Besides, I see too many G35's in So Cal. I'd rather have something unique.

Part of the reason it has had no effect is that the scumballs at Mazda are still advertising the inflated/wrong horsepower figure. It's despicable, really. There are few cars on the road that I would be less impressed with than a RX8.
RussellP 09-27-2003, 09:43 PM I know how you feel, i just bought mine too and for a little while i wasnt sure i made the right decision. However, its true that the HP issue is really only a big deal on a few internet forums. Nobody else really cares and why should they? Its NINE horsepower, who cares. Its still fast as hell (can take an S2000 and boxter, right?), sexy lookin, handles better than its competition, well built and with a unique rotary engine which one day you can turbocharge if you wanna step it up a level.

You know what, who cares, really who cares? Should I do a poll, who gives a f#@$% about what irtmvez says or thinks? If you do not have the car, why be here? Go wiggle back under whatever dank, fungus encased rock you slivered from, let us enjoy the car in PEACE!
Ophitoxaemia 09-28-2003, 12:06 AM both are good cars, but the rx8 is nicer construction, and its got all the trick parts like aluminum hood, giant rotors, CF driveshaft, awesome doors, real back seats, ROTARY power, and i suspect the looks while not universally loved, will at least remain controversial, while the G35 coupe will meld into anonymity.
i drove the 350z and rx8 back to back and there was no comparison for me. the 350 feels like lots more power everywhere, but the rx8 is stealth fast with high revs and low weight (sounds great too!). the G35 coupe even heavier than the 350 and the back seat has VERY short headroom.
anyway, i used to race an rx7, and the rotary thing is very addictive. enjoy your car!

rxeightr 09-28-2003, 08:29 AM I also searched high & low for the best 4-seat sports car at this price point -- enjoy your RX-8, and never look back!
Sputnik 09-28-2003, 11:15 AM There are literally hundreds of opinions already on these questions, please look through previous threads for those. We don't need another thread that will eventually degenerate into petty arguing again.
