View Full Version : RX-8 = insurance non-renewal ?!!?
Good Duck 09-27-2003, 12:03 PM I just got a non-renewal notice from my car insurance. The reason? It's the RX-8. Here's the exact wording:
"High performance vehicle (2004 Mazda RX-8) insured by the policy is ineligible for the Florida Farm Bureau General Insurance Co."
WTF!!! High performance? It's not a Ferrari for chris sake. It's not even equal to Corvette and they insured that. It can't be because of my driving record. I have no accident, just 1 ticket, but that's over 4 yrs ago. I'm at a lost.
I've been insuring with these backstabbers for over 3 yrs now. The funny thing is my rate actually went down from my last car, a 2000 Civic Si. That car was on the list of top most stolen cars list. They did have a problem with it. Has anyone else heard of this asinine crap?
I have yet to speak to the agent. I love to hear what lame excuse he will give. On the bright side, I have until Nov. 29 to look for another insurance. Is there any good recommendation?
Irish_in_a_RX8 09-27-2003, 01:18 PM Thats insane - perhaps they made an error. Did you speak with a supervisor?
I find that Merastar Prudencial, einsurance, great american...to be some good insurance carriers.
loco4rx8 09-27-2003, 04:47 PM That's ridiculous!
I'm with Progressive, and they didn't give me any problems when I got the '8'. My driving record is less than sterling (2 speeding tickets on it right now), and I'm only paying $80 more per six months on the RX-8 than I was on the Accord coupe.
That is retarded, my insurance actually went from $150 a month with my hyundai tiburon to $87 a month with the RX8! It's a "sedan" not a high performance vechicle!
klegg 09-27-2003, 06:05 PM Welcome to the corrupt world of the insurance industry, no doubt one of the worst afflictions of the modern ages. Read your bible, the mark of the beast is statefarm, allstate, and geico.
Enough of the soapbox. If I had to guess, it is your age and the car, makes you to much of a risk. Of course, I have drivin in florida, and I would think the bigger risk is the 80 year old widower pulling a left across 3 lanes of traffic to get fresh citrius!!
starbucks 09-27-2003, 06:31 PM Off topic a bit, but I just got back from the market and saw a older senior citizen in a new camry back out of a parking space right into the car waiting in front of me for someone else to pull out and leave. Weird thing was the old guy looked back, stopped for a few seconds a foot away from the guys rear bumper like he was going wait, then let off the brake and...little boom, just a love tap one foot. I had a bad feeling becaue the old guy looked pissed, so we both had a chance to hit the horn before he hit.
Fortunately, he hit right on the rubberized bumper. I saw it flex but didn't appear to be damaged. The old guy didn't bother to get out and drove away! Hope that's not how it is in Fl.
klegg 09-27-2003, 06:36 PM oh it is. It is............

That's insane! My partner got a similar letter a few years ago from his insurance company (Erie) when he leased a Mercedes SLK32 AMG (349HP), except they said they'd make an "exception" because of his exceptionally good driving record.
I just switched from Allstate (because my premium went up way too much when I bought the RX-8) to Liberty Mutual -- I shopped around and they gave me the best rate (much better than either Progressive or Geico).
Good Duck 09-27-2003, 07:47 PM I don't think I'm particularly at risk for the insurance. My rate is a moderate $516 per 6 months. It went down from $542 per 6 months with the Civic Si.
Doctorr 09-27-2003, 08:04 PM My last insurer actually had a LIST of cars they don't insure...
Hummer, Jags, Viper etc, all the usual suspects.....
I went in to ask if I could buy a used Q45.......no.
How about an SC400?........no.
Maybe a BMW 760i, V12?.........get out.
I was quite worried when my '8' arrived, went into my 'most recent' insurers office, everyone had gone to lunch except the trainee, (!) I 'added' the '8' as a third vehicle, and he printed off my new proof of insurance card.....this is my lucky day.....then as I'm leaving, he says "Oh, I almost forgot, I have to check if we insure RX-8s"
Looks in his big binder......"Mazda.......MazdaSpeed Protege.......RX-7........no, it's not here, guess it's O.K."
And I'm all "Thanks for your help" and "See ya soon"
(and run like the WIND Doc....like the wiinnd!....)

carnut 09-27-2003, 09:18 PM I love that one, Doc! My insurance stayed the same when I went from a '96 Lexus LS400 to the RX-8; the 8 has to be cheaper to repair since it didn't cost nearly as much to begin with, but it may be a "higher risk." USAA lists it as a 2-door, and their system can't change it. However, the way they calculate things, the number of doors isn't a factor as I thought it might be. Those four seats probably help. By the way, when I went to my Mazda dealer yesterday, they had a Porsche 911 Cabriolet sitting there which actually has four seats. I'm sure they're fine if you have two children who are double amputees. Otherwise, no way. People are amazed they can fit in the back of the 8.
