It's fine for the car to make a sound of some sort (chirp, very short horn blast) when you arm the alarm. But the complete horn blast is a bit much. Scares the crap out of anyone in a 30ft radius.

Anyone know a way to disable/change that horn tone when you arm the alarm with the FOB?

Granted I don't have my baby yet....but most cars I've had you press the unlock once it unlocks drivers door, twice it unlocks both....I don't understand why you would have to hit the lock button twice to lock both the doors though...That's crazy????

I also would prefer a quieter confirmation.

Sure beats the POS Oldsmobile Alero I got as a rental a couple days ago - it blows the horn when you LOCK THE DOORS! I pulled into my hotel parking lot at 4AM and winced as I pressed the door lock button. What the hell were they thinking?

What if you lock the doors w/o the key remote? Remember doing that? Man... keyless entry was new only a couple of years ago really, it seems like its been around forever and its taken for granted. I've never had one before so it will be cool when i get the 8. But seriously... If you don't want to make the noise, take khoney's hotel example, remember the lock button in the car itself.

The thing that I love about using the fob, is that it really helps prevent my locking the keys in the car. And I have a long and sordid history of doing that! Also, you don't need to hit it twice - just one tap locks AND arms.

I like the horn confirming it locks but its real loud to me

well i changed my horm to air horns so when i lock the doors u hear LA Cucaraha in Air Horn Version...

Actually, there is a positive side to this. The fob has a relatively long range (much longer than my Jetta fob, for example). That, combined with the loudness of the horn makes it easier to find my car in a parking garage when I can't remember where I parked it. I just hit the arm button a few times and I hear my car calling out to me.

That horn blast annoys the hell out of me too. I park in a parking garage where I work and it is not a huge garage so the sound is somewhat contained. If I accidentally hit the button twice, that horm blast scares the shit out of me everytime. It is super loud in the garage.

Mazda.....listen up and change this on the 05's.

At PDI, my dealer explained that it was one hit for lock doors, second hit to arm alarm. If one click locks and arms then that's better.

I know for sure, however, that the horn blast is the only way to confirm that the alarm is armed - i.e., if the passenger door is ajar, one click on the FOB will lock the doors but no arm alarm, second click will not make horn go off.

Not the only way - the indicators only flash when the alarm arms.

If you press LOCK and don't get a flash, you've got a door or trunk ajar. Try it yourself: open the trunk, then press LOCK - the doors will lock but no flash; close the trunk and the lights will flash to indicate it's now armed.

i like the horn cause i don't have to look at the lights flashing to know my car is armed. especially when i can't see the car directly, but i want to make sure my car is armed. it's a very reassuring sound.

The first press of the lock botton on the FOB definitely activates the alarm. I just tested it.

A little off-topic, but maybe someone can help. The bulky keyfob and a bulky key (plus other junk on my keyring) leaves a big 'old bulge in my pocket that leaves people wondering. ;) Is there anyway with some kinda aftermarket thing to get the key and remote built into one? Like my wife's beemer key, the remote is built right into the key itself.

You can add an aftermarket alarm for fairly cheap and get a more pleasant 'chirp' confirmation instead of the horn blast. I did that ASAP as that horn blast annoyed the heck out of me.

Yes, but (we owners) shouldn't have to! I have a completely speculative suspicion that some programmability is available for the stock system.

And not just 'muted' horn on arm, but how about automatically locking all doors after engine start? Even my POS dealer-installed miata alarm did this and more. Perhaps we'll see procedures for changing alarm settings in the service manual -- if they ever become available. (It's not available yet, is it?)
