View Full Version : Lumbar? (Are the seats too flat?)

I don't have lumbar support in my current car but on a 45 minute test drive yesterday I found myself shifting a bit to find a really comfy position in the sport seats. They seem a bit flat and like they could really use a little lumbar support.

Anyone else?

Interesting, I remember reading threads of people complaining of some slight back pain after long trips and it turned out that the lumber support was poking into their back (the same happened to me). It seems some of the 8's had the lumbar support fully engaged. So, I encountered the opposite, I had to adjust the support down (flatten), it feels great now.

Seats in GT at least have electric lumbar support adjust. That should make it easy for you to get comfortable.

Yes, but he only has the sport package which comes with no lumbar support (manual seat).
Personally, I don't care much for the GT's adjustable seat, but the lumbar support would be nice to have with the regular seat, if nothing else...

I agree, it would be nice to have. Fortunately, the seat seems to fit my body pretty well, so I have not had a problem with my back yet, even on my 5 1/2 hr drive to Pittsburgh.

But when my back is acting up, I'm sure it would come in handy.

Yes I would like lumbar, one of my very few complaints about the car, heck my hyundai had lumbar!

I've got the electric lumbar support but moved it out of the way because it is too low to hit me in the right spot. 6'1''

Actually, the sport package DOES come with lumbar support -- just not "adjustable" lumbar support.

I have the lumbar and I only adjusted it once
I find the seats comfortable

Second - is there an on/off for the lumbar that I missed, or is it somehow built into the seat already and just isn't doing anything for me?

My 1989 Probe GT had a manual on/off lumbar and I'd be happy with something like that...

Well, I thought you already do have the car... I was wrong. :)
To answer your question, no, the manual seat in the RX-8 (that is the standard seat and the one with the sport package too) has no lumbar setting option whatsoever (unless I missed something obvious when checked out the car). True, the seat seems to be comfortable enough, but at least a manual lumbar support setting would be really good...
Hell, I'm driving a 1994 Probe GT now and I remember even the ones with a manual seat had electric lumbar AND bolster adjustability (mine has a six-way power seat). And that was 10 years ago when they came out.

Thanks for bringing this up. I have adjustable lumbar on my GT but have neglected to use it till now. I took a round trip drive SD to LA (over 3 hours total driving) and found my back sore. When I checked, my lumbar was completely flat offering minimal support. I've now got it almost all the way out; we'll see if it helps.

On a related note, to anyone with experience in customizing, what are the prospects of motorizing the passenger seat? Mostly my son rides there and he feels cheated not having electic adjustments. I don't really care about lumbar, but the fore/aft, seat back and height adjustments would be nice. Would I need to change the whole seat, or can the existing one be motorized (again, excluding the lumbar adjustment.) What would I expect this to cost?

I have the Sport package, and I've not had any problems with the seats even on prolonged trips.
